Fields Data Recovery Eric Keck Incompetent or Crooked? Pick one. St.Louis, MO Nationwide

I have a 2001-era Compact Flash for camera (64MB). It is solid state; that is, it's a digital chip. I asked Fields Data Recovery to give me an estimate because the young women who spoke on the phone said it was probably going to be close to $99...the minimum. I sent it to them. And waited. And waited. Finally, I paste the email conversation with Eric Keck, the account rep: Just touching base with you about the drive you have with us. Just seeing if you have decided what you wanted to do with your drive. Touch base with me when you get a chance.

Thanks! You charging over $800 for the retrieval would be way too much by a factor of 10 even if I had plenty of disposable income. It's an insult to the intelligence of any rational human being after you spent (what? an hour?) that little time and attention on it. It probably took your bench tech one run through what is likely a standard software to retrieve less than 64MB of 2001 compact flash data. We don't have bench tech's working here. We have data recovery specialist. I'm not sure on the exact amount of time spent on your drive, but even a head swap takes less than an hour, and you probably know the going rate for one of those. That aside, would you like me to send you back your drive? Thanks! Eric Keck

Eric Keck is an Honest Employee

AUTHOR: Business Consumer - (USA)

I recently used the services of Fields Data Recovery, and wish I had searched a bit more before I did so. Finding multiple complaint about the company didn't help me when I had some issues.

I originally contacted the company about recovery for a hard drive that was spinning up but not mounting according to a local tech. I checked the website and saw an initial price of around $200+ to recover my data as long as nothing was wrong with the drive. I called in and spoke with Clyde and expressed a potential urgency for receiving the data, which he mentioned might cost a bit more, but he stuck to the $200+ price. They generated a UPS label and had my drive the next day.

I was assigned Eric Keck as my account manager and we began trading emails. He was pleasant, professional, and responded quickly both in email and on the phone. The next day he informed me that they were able to recover the data but would not have the information for me until Monday, as it was late on Friday already.

On Monday he informed me that it was roughly 64GB and the tech report put the cost at over $1300. I was certainly taken back by the change, and he stated that he did not make the pricing and it was only provided to him by the back office. I waited a few days and received an email from him that they could do it for $900+ but they had to have an answer or send my drive back. I paid the money and was expecting the drive to go out the next Monday, as a week had already gone by.

For whatever reason, that did not happen, and it was not until Wednesday. Once I received the tracking info from Eric, and received my backup drive, I found that the data I wanted was all there. The report provided showed that only software work was needed to correct bad sectors.

I expressed my displeasure at the change in price, and also how it conflicted with the Fields Website Cost estimator that showed a range from $300-$820.

Eric at all times was professional and responsive, even when I felt I did not receive such treatment from another satff members when Eric was not there.

Having run businesses, it is sometimes difficult for employees to have to work under bad policies.

I do consider the pricing change an ethical issue, and will be attempting to take it up with the main office, even though they are in the UK. The manager Todd Taylor does not appear to respond, nor have any power to do anything about it. Mr Keck personally should be viewed in a positive light.
