We would advise consumers to avoid 5/3 Bank like the Plague! My husband and I were assessed $640 in overdraft fees from 2/24/09 - 3/11/09, which 5/3 removed from our account.

Here's the story: admittedly, we weren't keeping as close an eye on our account balance as we should have, since we were out of town. 5/3 assessed a fee between $25 and $37 each time our account was overdrawn (a few times, the account was overdrawn by $2 and 5/3 assessed a $37 fee each time). When we returned from our trip, my husband deposited several hundred dollars into our account to cover the overdraft. Since the exorbitant overdraft fees from 5/3 were unexpected ($330 in one day), he did not take those into account.

Thus, when 5/3 removed the fees from our account, THEY CAUSED OUR ACCOUNT TO BE OVERDRAWN AGAIN. My husband deposited more money to cover the overdrafts, and 5/3 continued to assess fees which they would remove from our account, CAUSING THE ACCOUNT TO BE PERPETUALLY OVERDRAWN.

Furthermore, we were not notified of the charges for several days, which led to being overdrawn again. My husband considers this LEGALIZED EXTORTION. We have been 5/3 customers since 2000, but are closing ALL of our 5/3 accounts and taking our money to Chase Bank instead.

All Banks Are The Same

AUTHOR: Jim - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Sunday, March 15, 2009

Your complaining that since you weren't watching the balances in your account (I don't know why watching them would make any difference), you overdrew your account and you're blaming the bank? You must be joking.

I wouldn't leave your current bank. What happened to you at 5/3 would have happened at every bank out there. They all work the same way, they all administer accounts the same way, and you be out MORE than $640 at your next bank. If you do decide to switch, let me the first to say that we all look forward to your next rip off report on your new bank when the same thing happens.

SO You Think Chase is better?

AUTHOR: Unknown - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Sunday, March 15, 2009

Well after reading your complaint I have to say, that moving your account to Chase is worse than staying at 5/3..I moved my account so fast out of Chase that only a rocket could of kept up..They took $25.00 off my Chase credit card to open an checking account for me..Then took the same $25.00 and used to pay for the Rewards Card, so I had nothing to start with in my checking account...My spouse had been with Chase since it started and mails in payments as they do not trust to do them online, and to my spouse's dismay, the mailed payment got there one day late and so the interest shot up from 8% to a whopping 30% overnight..So we called customer service who credited the late fee back to the account but would not put back the interest to 8%.. SOOOOO we took the amount that was owed at Chase and moved it to 5/3 and now getting 3.9% for the life of the transfer..Why does people belive that moving your accounts to other banks is going to improve anything? ALL banks works the same..I have been a teller at 2 large banks and both was exactly the same..Both had fees, high over the limit fees, late charges, over drafts,etc..You are not special, so moving your account to another bank actually hurts you in the long run..According to your own statment you was not watching your account and blame the bank..I read so much on here about how bad the banks are..But actually is the individuals who can not add or subtract is the problem..I was taught how to do banking when I was in the 3rd grade years and years ago..Plus both my parents also never had problems with banking as they both went to school to add and subtract and not to blame their problems on everyone else.

So....

AUTHOR: Wouldntyouliketoknow - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Thursday, March 12, 2009

You caused yourself to become perpetually overdrawn. It's called "rules and regulations" that you signed when you opened the account. This is no one's fault but your own.

Why change banks?

AUTHOR: Edgeman - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Wednesday, March 11, 2009

The same thing will happen at Chase if you don't manage your account well. It might make you "feel better" to change banks but the problem here is how you two manage your finances.

You think Chase is any different?

AUTHOR: Mr Common Sense - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Wednesday, March 11, 2009

Banks charge fees when you spend money you don't have. Why do you think moving banks is going to make any difference. You are responsible for keeping your own records - not the bank. The bank cannot possible contact everyone that overdraws their accounts by phone. You are blaming them for your mistakes and expect them to just cover you for your inability to keep a checkbook. Follow the policies that you received when you opened your account, don't spend money you don't have and you won't be charged fees.

So why whould everyone else avoid them because of you?

AUTHOR: John - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Wednesday, March 11, 2009

Why should people, that have no problems and keep an accurate register and don't spend money they don't have, avoid them? I don't get it.
You admit you weren't paying attention to your own account.
