I was a member since 2002 of First Charter bank, a regional Charlotte bank that was very friendly, small, and accommodating. I couldn't have been more pleased with them and everything ran smooth. Soon Fifth Third Bank purchased them and turned over their leaf. Since this change, I have had 5 overdraft fees ( I never overdraft!!) and for the first time in 3 years, my rent check bounced. All because "They stop processing at midnight and my paycheck was deposited after midnight." So then they hit me with 3 more charges. The lady on the phone told me "that they are NOT first charter" and was as emotional as a pap smear. I went to my local branch and they refunded the 3 charges BECAUSE THEY COULDN'T TELL ME WHERE THEY CAME FROM! I can NOT comprehend their website because they keep transactions pending for DAYS AND DAYS. To the point you have forgotten you paid that bill, so you go get ice cream, and then they can overdraft you out of house and home. The record so far is 7 days. Things that used to go through 3 hours later in the same day go through 7 days later. I don't think this is helpful to my finance strategy!

Everyone in my home town is upset because we all were fans of First Charter's friendly approach and now everyone is clearing out from this new bank. I am researching banks in my area and will begin the painful move of funds in the next few weeks. I will NO LONGER be doing any business whatsoever with this awful incompetent money grubbing bank! Please, if you like having money- DON'T BANK WITH THIS COMPANY!!!

NO NSF fees?

AUTHOR: Robert - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Wednesday, September 17, 2008

But you DID get an OD fee from your new bank, didn't you? You reported on another ROR that you only had ONE OD fee from your new bank.

Keep it up and soon we will see another ROR from you about your new bank.

Your method isn't working. Keeping an accurate account register and not spending money you don't have will prevent you from EVER paying an OD or NSF fee again!

Account register: it works every time it's tried.

Not the bank's problem

you don't want to keep up with technology. YOUR 'system' is failing and a sinister way to blame others for your own mistakes..

Your "case" is going to hinge on....

AUTHOR: J G Shrugged - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Wednesday, July 23, 2008

What documentation 5/3 gave to everyone when they bought the other bank. Some smaller and regional banks will post credits before debits, but the larger ones don't. When debits post first, no matter when you deposit cash on a day, if you overdraft based on the previous day's balance you will get hit with fees.

Go back and see what T&C they mailed you.

If you've had nine overdrafts in two weeks...

AUTHOR: Edgeman - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, July 22, 2008

Then your financial management system clearly needs to be adjusted. With gas and food prices so high, I'm sure you don't need to be handing the bank an extra $300 over the course of two weeks.

It doesn't matter if your system worked well for you in the past. What's important is that it isn't working now.

I have never in 10 years KEPT A REGISTER!

AUTHOR: Blisslyke - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, July 22, 2008

Dudes- Quit with your anal accountant input- MY POINT In posting was venting about how much this bank has changed. With my old bank WHOM they bought out, I DID NOT NEED TO REGISTER ANYTHING. This is how I have ran my finances for YEARS. And guess what? In 6 years, I maybe had 2 overdrafts. AND I could repair them in the SAME day. This place is sinister and I don't care for your financial advice because my own system worked for me for YEARS. Suddenly I've had 9 Overdrafts in 2 weeks. That's a load of B.S. I don't care who you are. If you saw my OLD statements, you would see a clear process and understand how it worked. This is why I hate this bank, not to mention their ROBOTIC customer service reps, and deceitful policies. 2 more weeks and I write them off forever (except with my lawyer.)

The OP never mentioned a checkbook register. That is the problem here.

AUTHOR: Steve - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Sunday, July 20, 2008

No rip off here. Just poor account management.

The OP depends on online banking for available balance, and never mentioned keeping an accurate checkbook register.

The OP also cannot comprehend the funds availability policy of 5/3, and most large banks. Making transactions prior to the deposit of your funds will result in OD charges.

The days of floating transactions are long gone.

And, making multiple small transactions like for ice cream, etc with a debit card is just asking for trouble!

Keep an accurate checkbook register.
Stop spending before you reach zero.
Read the funds availability policy you agreed to.

Problem solved.

#5 Consumer Suggestion

A few things.

AUTHOR: Nikki - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Saturday, July 19, 2008

First, if you get paid on Friday, you cannot spend the money until Friday. It doesn't matter if it posts at midnight on Thursday, you cannot spend it until Friday. At any bank you go to, anything you spend on Thursday or before will NOT wait until your Friday paycheck. Anything you spend on Thursday or before will incur a fee because you haven't been paid yet.

Second, you need to keep track of pending transactions. Do not let any bank do this for you. As you stated, you forgot that you paid those bills. The bank posts pending transactions when the merchant submits them for payment. Therefore, the merchant is waiting days before they submit them, the bank is not waiting days to post them. Remember, it's all done by computer. Someone doesn't sit there any say, "Let's hold onto this charge until this person overdrafts, then post it right before their direct deposit." They don't have enough employees to do this on peoples' accounts.

Third, many banks wait a few months and re-run Chexsystems on their new account holders. If your new bank does this, and finds you owe money to Fifth Third, they will probably close your account. Before you completely dump Fifth Third, you should make sure your account is paid up or your new account may be closed and you may not be able to open another bank account for 5 years.

I know it sucks, that that's the way it is these days.

This can't be happening! What a nightmare

AUTHOR: Blisslyke - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Saturday, July 19, 2008

So now we're in the hole around $500.00 and they refuse to work with us. They continue to hold our transactions for DAYS and push them through BEFORE deposits on purpose. I had my mother put money in only for them to eat it up with overdraft fees. I called the 800 number and was told that because those transactions were pending, my deposits didn't mean squat. THEY HAD TOLD ME I HAD ONE BUSINESS DAY TO RESOLVE MY ACCOUNT.

I already have a new bank, and I am moving everything there ASAP. I'm considering forming or joining a class action lawsuit.

before the money is in the account. YOU were in the wrong by your own admission:

The solution...

AUTHOR: Edgeman - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, July 18, 2008

Is not to worry about their online banking service. Just keep a register and record EVERY transaction. That way you won't have to worry about confusing transactions or forgotten bills.

If your finance strategy includes using debit cards, your finance strategy stinks.

AUTHOR: Friendly Help - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Thursday, July 17, 2008

I simply will not TOUCH a debit card. I never have, and I never will.

I delt with 5/3 in Cincinnati c. 1965 and I was not fond of them then. And my banking then was as simple as simple could be.
