In May of 2006 I purchased a used 2003 Ford Taurus from Rhoden Kia of Lincoln in Lincoln Ne. When I purchased the vehicle the sales man was able to get me an extended warranty for it for $1400.00 plus the extra interest on the loan and the sales tax I had to pay when licensing it.

In July of 2006 I had a problem with the ABS sensor acting up when stopping at slow speeds. I took the car back to Rhoden Kia because all warranty work has to be done there at the dealership. After a couple hours Darryl called me from Rhoden Kia and told me he had some good news and some bad news. The good news was that they found out what was wrong with my car, the bad news was it wasn't covered by my warranty. He said the exciter ring on the axle was broken. I said great! It is covered then because it says on my paper work that the axle is covered. He told me that the exciter ring part isn't. The really bad news is that you can't buy just the exciter ring, you have to purchase the whole axle. I was confused at that point.

I called the warranty company to ask what in the world was going on. The rude man on the phone told me that the exciter ring was not covered. I said I don't understand if it is connected to the axle then it is the axle that is broke. I said where can I purchase just the exciter ring? He said you can't you have to purchase the whole axle. After trying to argue the point of it being one part he went silent and wouldn't speak to me anymore. I said your silence speaks volumes and hung up.

I then called Rhoden Kia back and had them put my car together and I took it to Mark my mechanic at Pro-Automotive that is honest and fair in his pricing. He said that the exciter ring does not come as a part by itself, that it is a whole part. HMMMM....the whole axle, again this is covered according to my warranty paperwork. So I had Mark fix it and he charged $43.00 less than Rhoden Kia wanted to charge me.

I have since gone to three stores here and asked if the exciter ring comes as a separate part and all three have said no it is all one and it is casted together. I even had them pull them from the shelf and I took pictures showing it seems to be casted together and not something that just comes off. When asking this they all three stated that it is very seldom if at all that that part would even break or go bad.

I would like to see First Extended Service Corporation be investigated for all the claims they won't cover and see just how many people they have gotten money from for their so called warranty and not honored. I am going to file a suit with the Attorney General here and I am also contacting the Ford Motor Corporation to see what they say about that part.

I work very hard for my money and being a single parent I don't have alot to spare so I thought the warranty would be a great help to me when repairs were needed....Boy was I WRONG!!!

Replacement parts

AUTHOR: Leo - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Sunday, August 20, 2006

It's not so easy with replacement parts as you might think. You are blaming the Warranty company, and normally I am the last one to defend them, for not giving you an advice but they may not even know all the details other than that a particular component being not covered. As a matter of fact, when I do inspections for corporate clients like Extended Warranty companies, they routinely ask me to check for parts availability.

Another fact to consider: a federal law requires auto manufacturers to have replacement parts available for 10 years after a particular model has been discontinued but since the laws are written by the corporate lawyers, there is a small loophole pre-installed: the law does not specify in what chunks parts should be made available. For example, a 30c bolt may come with a $5,000 engine assembly only

And finally, if you are planning to buy another Ford, extended warranty is unlikely waste of money. I always tell my customers that buying a dependable product WITH professional pre-purchase inspection is enough piece of mind.

extended warranty

AUTHOR: Melanie - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Sunday, July 30, 2006

I don't believe I will ever purchase another extended warranty. Like you said I could take a used car to Mark at Pro-Automotive and have a pre-purchase inspection done on it. I believed what Rhoden Kia was telling me was the truth and I fell for all of it. I should have told them Mark had to look at it first.

As for the part....I had Mark put the new axle in and it cost me a total of 195.12 at his shop. It would have cost me $43.00 dollars more at Kia. There is a $100.00 deductible with the warranty. Since it wasn't under warranty I didn't have to pay that. However I did have to pay Kia $71.40 for them to look at my car and do an oil change. So all total I paid out $266.52 for an oil change and a new axle. If I had done it at Kia it would have been $309.52. I should have just gone straight to Mark and I would have gotten it even cheaper because he doesn't charge as much for an oil change either.

I have been told by several people to just cancel my warranty with this company though. I am still considering it. But if the motor or tranny were to go I would have a 2003 Ford Taurus that wouldn't be running and a car payment to make anyway.

I have learned a huge lesson in the last week. Warranties aren't always great, Rhoden Kia won't go the extra mile to help a customer, and First Extended Service Corporation won't and or can't explain their own warranty very well. They also won't tell you where you can go to get the parts that aren't covered under their warranty.

Will you ever buy an extended warranty again?

AUTHOR: Thomas - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Saturday, July 29, 2006

Your warranty was $1400
You probably have a deductable-?
The axle was $92 and a seperate ring was $13.
Labor was...??... maybe $400?

So you bill was? $500 - any deductable?

Will you buy an extended warranty ever again?

Yea, yea, the engine could blow or the tranny could fall out, but you could take any used car you are considering to "Mark my mechanic at Pro-Automotive that is honest and fair in his pricing" for a prepurchase inspection for, oh, $100. Then you might save $1300?

update on exciter ring on front axle

AUTHOR: Melanie - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Saturday, July 29, 2006

After going to three part stores and being told the exciter ring does not come separate I called Anderson Ford of Lincoln and spoke with a very nice gentleman in the parts department. He gave me a little more information then the other three part stores, Kia of Lincoln, and the warranty called First Extended Service Corporation.

The exciter ring is a separate part that only Ford carries separately. The part store carry after market parts and they have only the whole axle with a the exciter ring connected. First Extended Service Corporation could only tell me that it was not covered and gave no information on how or where I might be able to get that part. The part that I needed was $12.90 and I had to spend $91.23 for a whole axle. Had I been told to try a Ford dealership I could have saved $78.33 just in parts.

I think First Extended Service Corporation should know what it is their saying is not covered and be a little more helpful in letting people know why. The man I spoke with had no clue what he was talking about other than he knew it wasn't covered. I now have a new axle on my car and learning experience under my belt. I am still angry with First Extended Service Corporation and feel their warranties that they offer should be looked into. The exciter ring is not a part that goes bad or breaks normally and should be covered by a warranty.

I still have two years on my warranty and I going to keep track of all the things they say aren't covered and compare it to all that is and see which is longer. I think we all know what that answer will be.
