I answered a questionaire in the local Home Depot store about the type of water I consumed. I replied that I drank distilled water or two-stage carbon filtered tap water.

I received a call from one "Home Services" (813-664-1749). They wanted to offer me "free" water testing in-home and set up an appointment. A day later one Charles Maurice Pedraza arrived early and produced a kit of vials and chemicals in a small aluminum case that supposedly tested water.

He had no company ID. He could not produce a business license or a copy thereof. He claimed his employee number was 62887.

I asked him the value of his kit. He could not tell me the value. I asked him, "You are responsible for this kit, are you not?" He said, "Yes." I said, "But you do not know the value?" He said, "No."

I asked him what impurities the kit tested for. He answered, "Chloride...", and three others. There are over 100 water pollutants in most town and county water systems of the United States.

I asked him how a common pollutant such as the chlorinated hydrocarbon tetrachloroethene (PCE) would show up in his kit. He said, "It would form particles that would sink to the bottom of the vial." This is false.

EPA Testing Method 524.2:
Measurement of Purgeable Organic Compounds in Water by Capillary Column Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry - Revision 4.1.
Summary:
Inert gas is bubbled through a water sample to purge volatile organic compounds with low water solubility. Purged compounds are trapped in a tube containing suitable sorbent materials. When purging is complete, the sorbent tube is heated and backflushed with helium to desorb the trapped compounds into a capillary gas chromatography (GC) column. The concentrations of compounds from the trap are measured using a capillary column GC system equipped with a mass spectrometer (MS).

He did not have a capillary column GC system equipped with a mass spectrometer (MS).

The International Agency for Research on Cancer has classified tetrachloroethene as a Group 2A carcinogen, which means that it is probably carcinogenic to humans.

I asked him the accuracy of the kit in PPM (parts per million). At this point he said, "You know... I don't have to put up with this interrogation." He walked away and got into his vvery expensive car, and drove away.

I have some rhetorical questions for you,  the reader of this complaint.

Was this guy really who he said he was.

Was his kit a real testing kit and not some gimmicked sales tool?

I am glad he want away.

What is Home Depot trying to do here?

I am a water analyst for Florida Energy Water and Air, and I can assure you that our training nor our test kits qualify us to tell you what is exactly in your water. We are fully trained to tell our clients that anything in the water is primarily dissolved solids. We do 3 primary tests. A precipitation taste, A hardness test, and a chlorine test. The precipitation test uses 2 chemicals. A yellow background dye to help see any dissolved solids, and a mild form of acid that coats the solids in the water and makes them precipitate to the bottom of the sample jar.

During our demo we only use facts from credible independent studies from different labs and other sources i.e Orlando Utilities, Zero Waste America, Water Quality Association have found in Florida Tap Water. During our demo a substance such as tetrachloroethene is never tested for. In fact the only thing we are explaining to our clients in regards to this is that the EPA allows a MCL Maximum Contaminant Level of this substance in drinking water of .005% in Public Supplied Drinking Water.

Since you have done so much research on the proper way for testing for these substances, you would find this out as well if you did a little bit of research on MCL in drinking water. Just facts. Sounds like you had a new guy in the field come to your home and you had fun busting his chops. If he gave you improper information instead of just saying " I am not sure" then he was in the wrong. But again I assure you we are not trained to give false information
