The toilet valve in my upstairs bathroom just blew apart and no one have been in the room for hours. Sounded like a jet hit the top of our home. I ran upstairs to find the stool lid blown off to the floor and water shooting up 3' all over.

I cut off water and started cleaning up. It ruined the ceiling in the den below! Fluidmaster refuses to repair the damage saying we used toilet chemicals in the stool which we never have.

I notice now they have redesigned their valve where it blew apart with much stronger and more materials. Anyone that has one of their old valves in their home should ck and replace as these valves have just 3, small tangs of plastic holding them together at the bottom where they go thru the tank. You could be unlucky and come home to a flooded home thru no fault of yours and due to a faulty valve that should be on a mandatory recall and free replacement.

hello, 30 year plus plumber here.

California plumbing code (UPC) requires any building with water supply pressure above 85 PSI be reduced to not exceed this pressure. I have seen your particular problem with homes that exceed 100 PSI. If your house water pressure exceeds 85, It is advised to install a pressure reducing valve to make it so.

Where did the fluidmaster valve come to be installed in your toilet? Did the toilet manufacturer provide the valve pre-installed? If so the toilet manufacturer might be partially responsible.

Did the fluidmaster valve replace a preexisting valve? If so, did a licensed plumbing contractor install it, or someone else? If a plumber installed it, it is less likely the part was installed incorrectly, than by another. The plumbing company should be contacted for assistance. Most plumbing contractors offer a warranty for a particular period.

If you replaced the valve itself, it is possible it was not installed correctly. I have seen various fluidmaster ballcock fill valves, and as with some other "adjustable" height valves come apart if not installed correctly.

Occasionally, when you replace OEM (original equipment manufacturer) plumbing parts with "fits-all" products from hardware store grade parts, you change the intended use. For example: A 1.6 gallon per flush toilet may come with an OEM flapper type part. If you install a fits-all flapper, the toilet may now use 2 or 3 gallons each flush.

Big box hardware superstores provide many seemingly simply plumbing repair solutions. Some products are code approved, but many products do not have IAPMO or UPC approvals. Some of the parts are made to be easily installed, but they may not be approved, or safe to install or have installed in your home. Many consumers do not know this. It's true. A qualified person (usually not someone working the plumbing parts isle) knows the plumbing code, and as a result, can make safe, prudent recommendations for replacement parts, and tell you why.

I would like to know the above outlined answers, and then, perhaps, could more readily offer a more precise suggestion to preventing this problem in the future.
