Okay, so I look like a total sucker, and sound like a total arse when I say that I would never go for something like this.

I had been checking out cheap flights for an end of university trip, when one site asked to register details so as to keep me informed of deals. This would normally be to much bother for me, but in an uncharateristicly patient moment I decided to oblige.

I wasn't interested in entering some obviously phony prize draw and was therefore completely at a loss when I recieved a phonecall from a completely unheard of company. About to put down the phone, I was sceptical but taken aback to hear that I had won something. As a student, and eager for any offer or freebie, I decided to hear her out- after all, it was her phone bill!

I was told all the details of a holiday far from my dreams, 4days, 3nights, in a Holiday Inn, first in Orlando, Florida, and then in Daytona, Florida. Then on to a 3 day, 2 night cruise on the SS Ocean Breeze, to the Bahamas, but at this point I was led to understand that I had won this as a prize.

Karlene Thompson, promotional director, employee number 603, then told me that this was not a prize I had won, as then I would be required to pay a tax, but was instead an increadible offer, 85% off a $4085 holiday, so costing only $937 for 2 people... she then went on to tell me that I would get a further 2 tickets for friends, so taking the price to 637, for 4, 159 each.... I was a bit put-out at the thought of additional costs for flights but the talk of a free digital camera (and probably completely tasteless luggage) was a big factor in continuing.

At this point I was confused, I would normally have put the phone down at the start, but Karlene was very good at putting me at ease. I told her that I could not afford the holiday but may be able to spit it with friends for a fun, cheap silly girly holiday in the sun... she let me ring friends for a half hour before she rang back...

My sister was the only one I was able to speak to- she said that she was instantly suspicious, but then i had been as well- she couldn't think of any good questions to ask, and became quite excited about it all...

My second conversation with Karlene involved my questioning over any hidden costs- the transfers would be taken care of, there was a hotel tax that would need to be paid by us, but the cruise would be all inclusive (besides alcohol) and we would stay in a state room, not a shoe box... I had the customer services number and e-amil address etc....

(I had also been told about the additional trips that would be possible as long as the port tax, of $239 each, was covered by us- although this didn't really interest as I could see it was all already adding up...)

I quized her on the company- it was a large, well known american company- (I can see why now!!), the offer was available to 183 customers, made possible by a number of american tourism and travel companies, aiming to increase tourism following the downturn in the wake of september 11th... All this sounded creible, but I was still suspicious, and asked to delay payment until the following day as I wanted to run it past my parents who were in the states at that time- but the offers had to be filled that day, so for some absolutely, again uncharacteristicly, rediculous reason, I decided to follw through with it......

I was put through the payment process, recorded call, verification number etc.... and put the phone down in absolute disbelief at what I had just done with money that I didn't even have!.... and waited for my information pack, luggage and camera.

I recieved my conformatory e-mail and checked the progress of my UPS pakage... My mother called today while I was at college, asking about a pakage that had attempted to be delivered today, but couldn't as it required a payment of over 20.... I naturally tried the customer services number, all variations of it, and other office numbers I had got for the company from international directory inquiries... no reply or number in use- there doesn't even exist a registered number in Michigan for the company.... the e-mail address is no longer in use and I doubt there would be any response to a written letter... a WWW search that only came up with this website was the only record of the company ever having existed...

This was the start of my true realisation that I will be working all summer instead of going anywhere as I will never see the money or the holiday.

I only regreat that I didn't use that half hour before she called back to search the internet for information like that on this site.....

I will keep you informed of any miracles that may still happen, but holding your breath could seriously damage your health....
