Gaited Pleasure Horses, Terry Zygalinski

I rode the horse on Aug. 5 and Aug. 9, 2016. Everything seemed fine, horse was very quiet. The Prepurchase Exam (PPE) was Aug. 10, 2016.

Mr. Zygalinski would only allow Dr. Chuck Kessinger, Adobe Equine Veterinary Services, on his property to perform the PPE (Pre-purchase Exam). I could not use my vet because this was too far away. I was there for the PPE. Everything seemed okay, horse was still very quiet.

I paid for the horse in full. Horse arrived (I arranged transport) late afternoon Aug. 11. Horse was very sick, temperature of 103, difficulty breathing, fluid in lungs, coughing, nasal discharge, lethargic. Admitted horse to my vet’s hospital Aug. 12.

I called Mr. Zygalinski that day, Aug. 12, to let him know the horse was sick and I wanted to return it after it was done at the vet. He refused to take the horse back.

On Aug. 19th, while the horse was still at the hospital, the vet informed me that he was also a Strangles Carrier and was going to need surgery. I texted Mr. Zygalinski and again told him I did not want the horse, I wanted to return it after the surgeries, again he refused to take it back. The Strangles was not new, this horse had been a carrier for awhile, this was confirmed by the surgries.

Strangles is a very contagious disease that if we hadn’t caught it quickly, could have caused a break-out and other horses would be sick.

Now that the horse is healthy it has much higher energy than when I initially rode. I believe, based on the horse’s behavior, that he was sick when I tried him out. Mr. Zygalinski said the horse was from Kentucky, but wouldn’t say how recently. My vet felt the horse had Shipping Fever, a type of pneumonia caused by long-distance trailer rides.

Dr. Kessinger left before reviewing the PPE results with me. When I called his office to find out why he left, they told me he was called away on an emergency. I did not receive a copy of the PPE until it was mailed to me, nearly a week after I purchased the horse. My signature is not on the PPE. Anything could have been written down since we did not review his findings.

On the Gaited Pleasure Horses web site “No one wants to be stuck with a horse they are not happy with. Our horses are fairly priced and comes (sic) with a limited purchase guarantee.”

I was verbally told that I could return the horse within three months, if I wasn't satisfied. This horse did not become sick after I bought him, he was sold to me while he was sick.
