I had a care credit card with my ex wife and last used it and paid it off in 2010. I asked for the card to be closed. It was not. Just recently, my ex wife called to activate it, this company illegally checked my credit and gave her an increase based on my credit and income. We are divorced and have not been together since 2010. When calling the company, they were very reluctant to give me any information, but I explained to them that it is showing up on my credit report as she maxed out the card and has not made any payments on them. When asking who gave them the authority to check my credit and up the limit on a dormant card, they said I gave authorization in 2008 when it was first opened. No explanation how this woman who has No Income can or planned on paying for this account, just that they did nothing wrong.

It is not as simple as that.

A few things here.

First when you did open the account in 2008 you did give them permission to periodically check your credit in terms of your credit "worthiness".  Yes this could include reopening the account 6 years later.   However, this credit check does not include any income verification because your credit reports DO NOT list your income.  So if there was any mention of your income that would have been from your ex.  And before you ask, no there really isn't a credit card company that verifies the income they are given.

Next, when you closed the account did you do this in writing?  Did BOTH of you request it to be closed.  The reason I mention this is because many times companies will not close joint accounts unless both ask to have it closed.  Because for all they know you could be making up an entire story and be doing that out of "spite" and unless you sent them the actual divorce decree they have no idea if this is the case or not.

Don't get me wrong, I am not saying that something is wrong here.  But based on what you posted your issue is more with your Ex and not GE.   In order to protect your credit you may have to make the payments on your account and then go after your ex in civil court.  You may also want to talk to a lawyer to see if there is some way you can get this off of your credit but don't be shocked if they tell you the same thing.
