I have been with GEICO for about 8 years now. First with a motorcycle and then with a few cars. For the last few years I have dropped all vehicles except one very expensive super car. GEICO was the least expensive and I went with them.

Several months ago my daughter received her driver’s license and used my PO Box as the mailing address. She does not live with me she lives with her mother {divorced 15 plus years}. GEICO without my permission added my daughter to my policy. They never informed me that they were doing this and of course on this type of vehicle it made the rates go up from $x,xxx a year to $xx,xxx a year. This is NOT the type of car any adult would allow their child to drive under any circumstances. I figured I would call GEICO and explain they added someone without my permission and that would be that. Unfortunately, that was not the case. First off they told me they could NOT remove her from my policy. After getting angry it changed to ‘since she lives with me’ they cannot remove her. I asked what makes you think she lives with me, they said same address. I asked how can you tell someone lives with someone by their address when it is a PO Box. They still refused because they said she lives with me {even though she doesn't}. I asked to talk to the manager and got the same run around, but was told I would have to provide proof she doesn’t live with me. I asked how am I supposed to do that? I was to give them an affidavit and signatures from my ex-wife and her husband stating she does not live with me but with them.

To do what GEICO asked me this is impossible. My ex-wife and I have not spoken in 13 years. If there is any communication it went through lawyers and then as my daughter was older through notes with her and now that she is almost an adult she orally delivers messages. Even if I were to get the message to my ex-wife she would never do anything to help me so again impossible.

The next day I called GEICO back and told them my daughter was not living with me and at college, thinking this would get her removed after reading on-line. I was able to remove her {so I thought} and all was good.

Later I went to my GEICO account on line and noticed that the rate was lower but not correct. After looking around I still saw my daughter on the account. WTF!. I called back and they told me "Good news your daughter is still covered on your car even though she is out of state at college!" I said NO! NO! NO! remove her completely, she will never drive the car and she is at college this is the stupidest thing I have ever heard of. GEICO refused to remove her. Again I ask to talk to the manager and after going round and round on this she tells me I will have to sign and NDE {Named Driver Exclusion} and an affidavit releasing GEICO of liability. WTF!

Why the h3ll do I have to do all this work when I never authorized her to be on the policy in the first place! While talking with the manager I logged on to my account and found they charged my credit card for the full amount when my daughter was on the policy listed as living with me! At this point I am pissed because GEICO has charged my credit card. This is an f'n SCAM to get money out of me. I then demand they remove my daughter, refund my money and set the account back to the original yearly amount. Again they refused no matter how angry I got or how much I yelled. After hours of round and round I hung up. Hours later I received and email with instructions on how to fill out and fax the NDE and the affidavit. I am told they will remove my daughter and leave me with a credit on the account even though I have demanded a refund again they have refused.

There needs to be something done about companies like this. They should NOT be allowed to automatically add someone to your policy and it should be extremely simple to call or go on line and remove a driver. If they need something for liability issues they can state that they will mail paperwork you can sign or you acknowledge it on line. I'm filing a lawsuit against them tomorrow and finding another company to handle my insurance needs. -John C.

I appreciate your response but this is still wrong. GEICO knows nothing about me, my life for family so they are making assumptions about me as you are without knowing everything. This is absolutely wrong. I do not need to explain to you nor should I to anyone anything about my life, but for the simple fact to clear up how stupid this is without knowing background I will share a bit. #1 This is a car she will never drive (it is a supercar). #2 She is out of state an on her own. #3 Has insurance through another company. #4 Cannot drive due to issues {medical and none of any one’s business}. So when I call up GEICO and say remove her from the policy because you have made a mistake they should just do it. It should be very simple, yes sir we will remove her. No this f#king company made me fill out paperwork, talk 10 different people, scream and yell to talk to a manager {while they keep refusing}.

I had to spend weeks of time fixing this. I work 10 hours a day and I don’t have time for this. Then when I finally made them remove her, they did not take the new amount of money I owed off the account, then when I yelled to get that cleared up, they still left a balance on the account. I had to fight them to remove that. So for you and anyone else out there. #1 I have insurance on this car as a separate thing, it was done that way on purpose. There is NO need to question my judgment or how I run my life or finances so any company or a person that forces something on me without knowing the facts is out of line. So being and ex-employee if I had called you would you have respected my privacy and understand I have everything covered? Would have then said “We will remove her from the policy without question because you are right we automatically added her without your permission?”. I bet not.

Out of State Daughter on Policy

Your daughter was added to the policy even though she is out of state. This has nothing to do with your vehicle. Since she is legally a resident of your household, the change is called a 'DASH' policy. It protects her if she has an accident in another vehicle, even away from college. If she has no insurance and has an accident driving a friends vehicle, YOU are responsbile as she is a resident relative.
