Geico Price tripled after claim paid Nationwide Nationwide
*UPDATE EX-employee responds: Questions
*Consumer Comment: Chargeable Offense?
My daughter had one accident claim. She is 21 years old, I'm 51 and my wife is 50. We've been loyal geico clients for 8 years and never had a single chargable offence prior to 2013.
My premium went from $303 a month to $957 per month in the next cycle. A triple increase!!!
Buyers beware - Geico is great at getting you onboard and paying your claim but will shred you to pieces once you have a claim.
Never again - NJ

While I am an adjuster and do not have knowledge of underwriting practices (how the premiums are derived), I have heard similar complaints from other customers.
A few questions:
- was the accident an "At-Fault" accident?
- if so, was anyone injured?
- does your daughter have a history of infractions (speeding, etc)?
A few things to keep in mind:
Geico generally offers low rates (well most companies do) to new customers to earn their business. They rate the policy based on past claims frequency, credit, age, job title, zip code, etc..
They do increase rates when they have to pay out on a claim....basically because the policy is no longer based on a history of no infractions/claims.
The type of accident-rear ending, running a light/stop sign....each bear their own weight. An at-fault accident in which the insured rearended a car at a red light with four people in it, 2 of which were injured, will certainly increase the premium more than one in which the insured backed out of a parking spot and hit a vehicle moving down the aisle.
I'm a bit suprised that after 8 years and a clean claims record the rate increased that much. I'm curious as to wheter or not they new she was a driver when they intially rated the policy. In other words, was she listed on the policy prior to the accident?

Chargeable Offense?

What exactly is a "Chargeable Offense"? It sounds like you are talking about your Daughter being charged with a crime in conjunction with an accident.
So exactly what were the circumstances of this accident she was involved in. That is was it a Fender Bender where she ran into the back of another car causing a few hundred dollars in damage, did she perform some other moving violation, or was she driving drunk and got into a major collision where the cars were totalled and she had her license revoked for a period of time?
As for the increase in rates, so since they went up the next "cycle" you of course looked around at other companies and found one that was cheaper. So what did you end up paying per month with this new carrier?...There is a new carrier..right?
