I have been with Geico for 3 years, never had an accident, never reported anything. I have always paid my policy and they have always been very friendly on the phone. Recently I had my license suspended for two months due to tickets. When I received my bill for the next 6 months for Geico, my insurance went from $280 every 6 months to $2000+ every six months. I thought this was OUTRAGEOUS and there is NO WAY I could afford that. Since I wasn't going to be able to drive for 2 months, I decided not to renew with Geico and just let my policy expire until I was able to get my license back and then shop around for a new company. However, when I called Geico to see if they could give me a lower rate, they claim that I owe them $200 for 12 days of insurance from the time my insurance was due, until the time they actually cancelled it. The $200 is the pro-rated $2000/6months coverage and not what I had been paying for the last 3 years ($280/6months). I called and expressed my frustration with the matter, and the lady kept saying that they assummed I wanted to keep Geico, so they charged me for those 12 extra days and then since they hadn't heard from me, they cancelled the policy. I told her the reason they didn't hear from me is because I didn't want that policy, and I never signed anything that said that I did! Her response was that I never signed anything that said that I didn't want it. Kept going back and forth and still in the process of desputing this charge.

Another thing the lady said was that supposedly GEICO must wait at least 10 days before cancelling the insurance "by law", and hence them billing me for those 12 days. If there is anyone out there who can help, it would be greatly appreciated. They are trying to screw me over for something I never signed for!!

The 10 day grace period is mandated by law

AUTHOR: Mike - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Monday, September 26, 2005

If you had been in an accident in those 10 days, they would have paid for it. They must extend a 10 day grace period before cancelling your policy for non-payment. They did everything by the book. There is one way, and one way only to get this reversed:

YOU NEED TO PROVIDE PROOF THAT YOU HAD ALREADY OBTAINED COVERAGE FROM ANOTHER COMPANY FOR THE 12 DAY PERIOD IN QUESTION.

If you are able to do so, this coverage would supercede the grace period and prove to geico that there was no risk during that time period. They will wave the charges if you can produce this.

If you didn't have other insurance during this time (shame on you) then the debt is valid. Don't even bother contacing the insurance commission because they will have no sympathy. The insurance commission is the very institution that enforces the law that required them to give you those 12 days of coverage in the first place, so believe me, they know the debt is valid.

Good luck.

call us to avoid problems

AUTHOR: Joe - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Thursday, September 15, 2005

If you were with us for 3 years then I'm sure you know that your policy automatically renews, unless you state otherwise. It is your responsibility to contact Geico if you wish to cancel your policy and go to another provider. We send out cancellation notices which provides a set period of time for you to pay your bill. You we what is called earned premium, which is the portion of days that Geico covered you. Hope that helps.

well They gave you 10 days worth of insurance

AUTHOR: David - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Saturday, July 23, 2005

Froom what I have read they are correct. if you live in California you can look here.

http://www.insurance.ca.gov/CSD/Brochure/Other_topics/YourRights.htm

They gave you 10 days worth of insurance, you should have called and cancelled.

They are required to send you a letter of cancellation with in 10 days of cancelling your insurance due to non payment. It is the law.

Since they provided you the service, you owe them the money.

They're right They are required, pending on the state, to continue coverage if you do not cancel it.

AUTHOR: Jason - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, July 22, 2005

They are required, pending on the state, to continue coverage if you do not cancel it. That's why you got a letter stating "Notice of Cancellation" and further stating the day that your insurance would be cancelled.

To have your license suspended for "tickets" can mean several different things related to your massive premium increase. Was the license suspended for going over points, for failure to pay, or for the type of ticket (DUI, etc)?

DUI in SC automatically puts you in the SR-22 category, and if you were suspended for points, probably the same thing. So you are being treated as having a DUI because of the number of tickets, thus making you "high-risk".

Often, insurance companies only check the policy holder once a year, and sometimes even less often. So if these tickets had been piling up over a while, that's why you didn't see the change in premium. A license suspension... Well, they don't like seeing those, so that's being held against you as well.

My question... You went back to Geico.. Did you go to someone else to get a quote? What did they have to say? You might find someone cheaper, but it will be minimally cheaper (Couple hundred bucks/6mos)

My advice, they're gonna come after you for that $200. Next time, call and cancel. Be proactive rather than letting things go. Secondly, stop doing whatever the hell you're doing in a vehicle. Whether it's not paying fines, collecting massive numbers of tickets or getting a DUI.. They're all bad. And third, which is just a total smartass thing that I know you can't do.. Move the hell out of CA. That'll bring that $2200 premium down to about $1200. (Not entirely true, but probably not that far off)

How to handle this issue!!

AUTHOR: Kevin - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Thursday, July 21, 2005

My first piece of advice to you is to do the following:

1) I would contact the state insurance commissioner in the state which you reside and inform them of the issue.

2) Also, contact GEICO's corporate office..

Telephone # (301) 986-2500 or 301-986-3000.

Here is a list of the executives which you can try to reach...

Chairman, President, and CEO: Olza M. (Tony) Nicely
SVP and CFO: Thomas A. Wells
VP and CIO: Jess Reed

I was having a hard time producing the rest of the executives for the company, but this is a good start...

Hope this helps...
