Almost two months after I send a batch of head shots out to agents, Gemma Regis called me, saying she represented the Shirley Wilson Talent Agency, and that Shirley would like me to come in for a reading. I was excited, of course, having received the "we're all full right now" message from any other agents who bothered to respond at all.

I drove to the audition site, a dinky little "theater" off of Sunset, and, having arrived early, caught a workshop in progress. After watching the "talent" Gemma was coaching, I should have immediately turned and walked away. (Almost all of) these children were horrible. But I stayed. And read for Shirley.

Gemma called me later in the week saying that Shirley wanted to sign me, but that I would need new head shots because my black and white ones were out of date (which is true). Gemma then told me that I could only go to the photographer she had in mind, and that Shirley wouldn't officially sign me until I had taken my new head shots and after I had taken some on-camera commercial workshops.

This set off some major alarm bells in my head. First of all, an agency can recommend a photographer, but cannot dictate where an actor can go, secondly, a real agency will sign you first and then send you out for head shots and workshops. You should NEVER have to open your wallet before being signed by an agent.

Don't listen to her BS about an agent wanting to test you out and send you out on auditions before signing you. No self-respecting, non-scamming agent would ever do that. Ever.

But, before I dismissed her, I decided to get an outside opinion from one of my actor friends. He came with me to a wardrobe meeting at Gemma's house. (She was late, working on a deal for a "side" business.) It was then she told me she was a talent manager, and would be my manager too, for 20% of my earnings, whether I wanted her or not (I do not want a manager).

She told me about all the people she was helping (out of an office in her garage). She kept coming back to this "fu**ing stupid" girl (her words) she kept sending out who had no talent and could hardly read, but was pretty, so casting agents kept calling her in. She never got any work, but Gemma kept her on and sent her through more of the workshops she runs.

After the meeting, my friend agreed that she was a scammer, so I called and left a message telling her that I didn't want to go through with it after all. (I didn't tell her why, just that I had a lot going on and that I wouldn't have a lot of time to do workshops and go out on calls.

The next day, I got four messages from her within a period of an hour and a half (yes four, from a "private" line), in which she screamed at me and told me that I'm ugly, a loser, will never get a job in LA, that she was my last chance at getting an agent because no one would ever pick up someone like me, and that I must have found those horrible, stupid, jealous people online who wrote nasty, false things about her. How stupid I must have been to listen to them, especially since she has so many people who do work with her.

I contacted the Shirley Wilson Talent Agency to make sure that it was actually Shirley that I met at the audition and it was. She said that, yes Gemma did work with her.

And apparently, she told Gemma that I called because the next day, Gemma called twice more (within an hour) to scream at me some more about how stupid I am.

I cannot tell you how glad I am that I found these reports online before handing that woman any money. Her reaction to my passing on her "offer" only confirmed my suspicions and what these other testimonies have reported.

Gemma Regis is a scammer and should not be trusted. If you even so much as hear her name, you should run in the other direction. And since Shirley Wilson seems to be okay with Gemma's behavior, I can only suggest that you avoid dealing with the Shirley Wilson Talent Agency as well.

I took many classes with Gemma and casting agents and I enjoyed being able to attend
workshops. For my personal experience she gave me the knowledge to help me succeed
in the Industry. She believed in me from the very start and I have known her for a few years, and she is the type of person who will say shape up or ship out. I know for a fact
that she really cares for her clients, she is tough on you but, her advice still helps me
to this day.

Shrewd business woman

Gemma Regis is many things for a few she is outspoken, intelligent, and brash. One thing I can tell you is that she definitely is not a saint, but in the fifteen some odd years I've known her, I've never seen any scam-like activity.

I met Gemma when I was fourteen, ready and willing to make a name for myself in Hollywood. However as many people know and don't know in equal measure is just because you feel you're ready, it doesn't mean Hollywood is ready for you, and Gemma has always been kind enough to let you know that, and if you want (Because no one is holding a gun to your head!) you can proceed to work with her. So as any person associated with show business understands, novice talent needs some type of education before proceeding.

Now I read in a proceeding statement that she held a workshop in a "dingy theatre off sunset" and that the kids were horrible. First off I just want to say that if you are more concerned with how a workspace looks than your craft, you're in the wrong business, it doesn't matter where you train, you can be at Julliard or some alleyway and still be unsubstantial when it comes to acting, first and foremost it is about the work, and that is something that Gemma had always instilled in me.

I don't think its fair to call Gemma Regis a scam artist, I think if you are a scam artist, it would be a 24 hour thing no? I think a proper name for Gemma would be brutally honest Talent manager or shrewd business woman, none of this means every single thing she tells your character/performance/talent/look is true, some things you take with a grain of salt, if many of our superstars today listened to the people, agents, reps., casting directors, producers, directors, parents who told them they would never make it, I doubt we would have very many of those stars.

In this business you have to be thick-skinned to endure, and be ever-unyielding, and to be quite honest it takes a certain type of person to WORK their way into this industry. All I know is that I was a kid living in Moreno Valley Ca, and Gemma got me an audition for Lion King in New York, that doesn't sound like a scam to me, it was more like a dream come true.

Gemma in many ways has to be brash she has to test the people that come into this thing thinking it's going to be a walk in the park, so many people come to Hollywood everyday and I can tell you, there are large groups that have not given any attention to the art of it, the work you have to put into your craft.

I believe that Gemma has a keen eye for who can work in this industry, and she tells you right off positively or negatively or somewhere in the middle where you fit into this realm of entertainment, after that its completely up to you, remember that.

By the way, Ms T lives in San Bernardino. First of all, you have no talent and it's very hard to be rejected by an agency and a manager. How can I rip you off. You never gave me any money. Sometimes telling a want to be actor the truth, hurts.

You came to me for a consultation after meeting with Ms Wilson. We both rejected you and decided to slander us. If you can't take rejected, you don't need to be in the entertainment industry.

Why would we want to hire a talent who has black and white pictures, fat, and look as though you just step out of the 60"s. You bring nothing to the table. My office is located in my home not the gargage and I'm legally permitted to work from there.

I offered you a list of photographer to shoot with and I also gave you advice about bad wardrobing. I'm the kind of manager who do not need talent without credits and have nothing to bring to the table. I already have several talents who have credit.

While you critized the kids in my workshop, please be aware that they have movies and commerical credits. What have you done? I have coached these kids and they are very successful.

In closing, Mrs. T pay special attention to Lydia Deng, six auditions and six bookings, Brenda Lula, two auditions, two movie films. Adrianne Duammont, one audition book the job on the first audition. Leroy Adams, signed with Shirley Wilson Agency his first audition booked television show undeclared. He never had a contract. Michael Angelo, Family Law, first audition booked it. Kelly Kube, Gilmore Girls, first audition booked it. These are the kids that you claimed that are no good. I've trained all of them and they are working so get a grip!

These client want to get into the industry and does not want to hear the truth. They also except thing for free and does not realize that this is a business. No one will pay for your workshop nor your pictures. I am a talent manager and my services are not free. They definitely have an unrealistic view about the entertainment industry. How can I rip you off when you never took a workshop of pictures with me. If you want a service, you have to pay for it.

I've very blunt, realistic and straight to the point. I will not cuddle anyone or lied to them. My opinon of you is just that "my opion". If you're unhappy with my style go somewhere else.

Some parents (Tad) can't handle rejected of their children. Many stage father's are unbearable. I'm happy that he changed his mind. Thanks Tad.

If you check on any agency, you will see sh*t on them. There are a lot of wacko parents and people out there.

Beware of Gemma Regis

AUTHOR: Tad - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Saturday, July 19, 2008

I had a similar experience. I recieved an evening phone call in early March 2008 (while I was out shopping) from Gemma Regis. She asked if my child was represented yet & since she was not, Gemma set up an audition at a place on Sierra Bonita in L.A. Gemma also mentioned that she was representing Shirley Wilson. I made the appointment for the audition on Sunday but I didn't feel right about it - I'd guess you would call it a "red flag" feeling.

When I got home I googled the phone number that Gemma called from and up came some negative information. On Saturday morning, Gemma called me to confirm the Sunday appointment but when I started inquiring on who she was, she became very defensive and angry. After speaking to her I called The Shirley Wilson agency and left a message on the voice mail inquiring if Gemma Regis did represent her office.

Well, I did not receive a call from Shirley herself, but she must have contacted Gemma because late Saturday afternoon Gemma contacted me and left a message on my voice mail. She was threatening me by saying that if my childs picture ever shows up on any of her agents desks again, she will rip them up and make sure that she never works in the industry because she has no talent and has nothing to offer the industry (my daughter has recently worked in film).

Gemma said that she works with MGM, Disney and other major studios and they trust her. She went on to say that I was judgemental on reading what I saw on the internet and that I should have read between the lines. I should have gotten the other side of the story. Gemma says she is an acting coach and some parent owes her money. She went on to say that they weren't asking any money from me so how could she rip me off and that I'm responsible for getting the photographs/headshots, etc.,etc.

Her words were degrading, beligerent and 100% uncalled for. Gemma's language was from the gutter (using the F word repeatedly) and what does that say about her - real class, huh? She got defensive and blew up. It's true that once you catch her at her game, she becomes another person that is 100% wicked & evil.

I never did waste my time and gas to attend the interview/audition because there were too many "red flags" telling me "BEWARE". I hope others will do research on Gemma Regis before auditioning with her. Please Beware of Gemma Regis!
