Restitution from Gomez rental scam

AUTHOR: - ()

POSTED: Thursday, April 06, 2017

I filed the above report after learning we had been scammed on Craigslist by short term rental agent George Gomez (aka Jorge Gomez, George Edwards, George Machin) who has 7 other reports listed on this site. After much effort, including filing a criminal case with the Miami Dade Police Department, Florida Attorney General's office, Florida BBB, Nettles Island Resort (where I paid $2650 in advance!), we were finally able to get a full refund. First, Mr. Gomez had no legal authority to list and offer the property for rent, never entered into a binding agreement after confirming our reservation and deposit of $1,325; offered an alternative which would not allow pets and cost us an additional $1,000; sent a post-dated check on an account to our home over 1000 miles away instead of via wire transfer as we had done originally which had insufficient funds anyway; and led us on for 3 weeks with excuses changing daily. Not until we finally began pursuing legal action and also working with another victim were we able to receive a refund. Although Mr. Gomez may do some legitimate vacation rentals, mostly in Orlando under several busines2 names including CVH VACATION HOMES, CCV Properties, etc., he also has scammed others usually out of state people who are not as persistent as we were. He has prior arrest records including grand theft auto and appears to now be unable to,utilize Western Union to make wire transfers due to his history of fraud. My advice, NEVER DO BUSINESS WITH GOMEZ or any of his various companies or aliases.

This scam now seems to be rampant especially in Florida and other popular resort areas. Even formerly popular site VBRO, which has been sold to foreign investors under the name "Home away" has been sited for simulate scams ranging from illegal fake rentals, failing to return deposit monies, double charging clients, etc. Giving this convenient new marketing alternative a very bad reputation. Lessons learned: 1. Do not rent from listings on Craigslist especially if you are not dealing directly with the verified property owner. 2. Do,not pay via cash in any form including bank wire transfers; if the renter or agent doesn't accept credit cards where you have some protections, it's not worth the risk. 3. Check out "Ripoff.com" , Better Busines Bureau, or other sites where similar scama may be reported keeping in mind these criminals use multiple names and companies. 4. Get the rental contract in writing. We did but even that wasn't enough as the address was fake as I determined using Google maps. 5. If it seems too good a deal it's likely a scam!
