I believe that because the new smart meters are digital they are being manipulated by the company for the purpose of them increasing their profits. Consumers have been forced to switch to these new meters without really having a say so. Why would a company put so much money into such an expensive upgrade? They stand to profit in the long run that's why.

The last few months have been a nightmare for me. I live in a 2 bedroom apartment with my 11 year old son. I barely ever have my lights turn on. I use 40 watt bulbs and when we watch T.V. the lights are off. We do use the heat, but lately I've kept that to a minimum.

My electricity has more than doubled since this time last year. I feel that Georgia Power somehow deliberately spikes your usage on the colder days, because the assume you're gonna have you heat on. The reason i believe this is because I purposley left my my heat off for two days (while freezing my tail off) and unplugging all appliances except the frig, only to find no change in my daily usage. How could this be?

When i called Georgia power to tell them this they told me "even when you turn off the heat the heater is still using some power." Really? am I supposd to be that stupid. He then went on to tell me that unless my main breaker is off theres's no way to tell there's is no power being used.

This is a flat out scam and it's hard to prove, but not impossible. I am going to see about getting the media involved in this and see where it goes from there. Maybe if we can get more people to come forward with this same issue something will be done about it. Good luck to all who are a victim of this!

These meters don't have the consumers best interest at heart.

Anyone who would take the time to come on here and respond to any of these complaints is either a consumer concerned for the well being of other consumers or an employee of the Company in which the complaint is about. If you are neither something is not right.

Of course you work for them why else would you even be reading these complaints? Most people who read these complaints either work for the Company or have a complaint of their own. If you have so much faith in the GA Power as a consumer why would you come on Rip Off Report? To see how great they're doing? Why would you take the time out to write such a lengthly rebuttal for something that doesn't concern you?

You say they increase rates during severe weather months like that is okay. As a consumer how does that not bother you? Of course they replace the old meters with smart meters to save the company money in the long run. Duh!! We should be more interested in a system that will save us money, not not rip us off and kill us off at the same time. No company would spend so much for an expensive upgrade if they didn't expect a return of investment. That would be bad business. Those meters cost them billions and they will make that money back at our expense.

I know the meters don't run when your breaker is off that would look suspicious genius. It's when the breakers are on is when I'm concerned. It's as if the meters are rigged to double what you actually do use. They could be set up to you know.... spin twice as fast plain and simple. You act as if this is not possible with modern technology. I guess you believe the machines at the casinos in Vegas are honest as well.

Yes you work for them. There are plenty of consumers on this forum with similar complaints. Are you going to respond to all of them? Of course you are that is your job. As an employee it is in your best interest.. If you don't work for them well then you're just a sad troll meddling in other peoples' affairs!!

Hello I agree with you ..If you would like we can actually together..do something about this company..please contact me at blackqueen32176@yahoo.com.. I am a firm believer..that companies get away with theses atrocious acts ..because people don't stand up for rights...long story short..I was charged over 700.oo for a small 2-bdrm home and only was here for one mth and a half..This is Ga power..and in my opinion they feel they can do these things because they monopoplize certain areas in GA..it's time to stop them in their tracks...it's getting out of hand...

First, the smart meters are installed to keep the company from having to pay someone to read the meters every month...

The savings can be substantial.  The meters do not receive usage data from the power company, the meters read the usage at your home and send the data via cellphone carriers.

Turn off your MAIN breaker and see if the meter is still running.  I somehow doubt it will be.  Also, ALL revenue grade meters, which these are required by law to be have to be accurate to within a fraction of a percent.

If the meter still runs with the MAIN breaker off, have your wiring checked and advise the company of this.

Read your own meter each month on the date your bill is tabulated.  Subtract the previous months reading from the current month and that will be the total KWH used, give or take a few KWH. If you don't know how to do this, their website or your bill may have that information or they will help you do it.  Your readings should be very close to what they show.

Nope, I don't work for them, but do have a smart electric AND gas meter at my home and they work very well.  You do realize rates have increased due to energy costs have increased and the weather has been severly cold don't you?
