I have been a Gexa energy customer for several years. They were once the most affordable electricity provider in my service area. However, they have begun to raise rates in excess of their published rates. When I called customer service after receiving my June bill, I was told that the rates listed on their facts label and the powertochoose.org web site were "introductory or new customer rates."

When I restated this information in a different format to the customer service agent in the form of "So what you are telling me is that Gexa uses a bait and switch tactic to gain customers, then penalizes their long time customers with higher rates," the agent confirmed that the existing customers do pay higher rates.

While I am all for a company charging whatever they feel is a fair rate for their product, I do not feel that Gexa is forthcoming in their policy. A quick check of both their website and powertochoose.org failed to turn up any information that indicated an introductory rate or any rate other than the one published. Due to this fact, I consider Gexa's unpublished rate policy a deceptive trade practice. I have referred numerous friends and relatives to Gexa, two as recently as the past week.

Unfortunately, I will no longer be referring any customers to Gexa and will be looking to move my business elsewhere, even if I have to pay a slightly higher rate, to deal with a company that is forthcoming and ethical. I requested to be contacted by a supervisor from Gexa. Based on the outcome of that pending conversation, my next stop is to file an official complaint with the Texas Public Utility Commission.
