4-7-04 Did an internet referral for movers.

4-8-04 Contacted by Casey of Giant Moving. I explained to him that I had a two bedroom apt but one bedroom was empty. There would be some stuff that I needed to go to storage and the rest to the new apartment. He informed me that they have storage and that the first month was free. I explained that I would only need it there a month because my brothers would be picking it up to bring to NJ. He told me that they went to NJ and that I could get the stuff there and they would only charge me to drop off from the point of where they were in NJ. I told him that was a good idea, but I would decide later whether to do that or just have my brothers pick it up but either way I would need it stored. He told me it was free the 1st month and then it would be $65 for each month after that.

We then discussed the move itself. I explained that I would have everything packed. There was not too much, about 20 boxes total, a bedroom, living room and dining table. I would be moving about 20 miles. He quoted me $65 an hour and stated the job would take 3 hours. This was agreeable to me. He stated he would forward me the contract via e-mail and that I would sign it electronically. THe contract read 3 men, 1 truck and 3 hours total and the price of $65 an hour.

4-12-04 I contacted Casey to tell him that I had not yet received the contract. He e-mailed and I returned to him signed. The move was scheduled for 2:00, April 15, 2004, 3 movers, 1 truck, $65 an hour, 3 hours.

4-15-04 I contacted Diane at Giant movers because the movers were to arrive between 2:00 and 3:00 and they were not there at 3:00. She told me that they cancelled me because they had the wrong cell phone number and I didn't reply. I asked why they did not call my work number and she said that Casey did not give it to here. She called me back saying the movers would be there by 5.

Three men showed up at 5:00 and the lead mover told me we had to do paperwork before they could move anything. We spent 30 minutes before they lifted the first box that went to storage. I had every boxe separated and marked which ones went to storage and which ones went to the apartment. The lead mover told me to stay out of the way, he knew what he was doing. I had sheets thrown over the sofa/loveseat that was to go to storage and he told me that I had to pay for them to be wrapped before they would take them for $15 each. He also wanted to charge me for covering my mattreses, televisions, and everything else but was going to take care of me if I took care of him. They spent 20 minutes covering my sofa/loveseat. The only thing I asked them for was a box for two lamps, and a photo which they charged me to pack. Then they charged me for the tape to pack it. It was past 6 before they began to move anything else. The lead man had some calls on his cell phone and when he didn't work the other two did not work. He was constantly yelling at them for bringing the wrong stuff and making them do stuff over again. At 7:15 they finally had the truck loaded but told me that because he did me the favor of not charging me to pack mattresses and televisions, (although the TVs were padded with blankets, which was included in the contract) he would not go over 20 miles an hour on the way there.

It took 1 hour to get there which normally takes 25 minutes the most. I called my roommate so mad because of them delaying everything. When we arrived, they refused to do any unloading until we did MORE paperwork and I had to pay. We had to go up to the 8th floor where he told me that it was going to be $80 an hour plus travel and loading the storage. I got upset and told him that I had a contract for $65 an hour and that it would not take that long if they hadn't been messing around and intentionally delaying the time to get this stuff moved. He called the owner who told me that he did not care what the contract said, it was $80 for 3 men. I refused to pay because of the contract and the owner finally agreed that I would be paying $65 an hour.

40 Minutes later, I got angry and told them to start moving my stuff and that I was not paying for the "paperwork" time. My roommate called our supervisor who also lives in the building, so he could deal with the movers. The lead mover told me that it would take two hours to offload the truck. I told him that he was crazy and that he could have the stuff offloaded in less than 1 hour if he would stop messing around with the paperwork and atleast have the other 2 unload the truck into the elevator. He got very nasty with me and they started to unload the truck at 8:40 pm. I went downstairs to watch them and they were mishandling boxes. There was a box of glasses that he moved and just threw and I said be careful that has glass in it, but he didn't speak any English and his partner just laughed. My supervisor came down and just sat in the living room and their attitude changed and for the first time, they worked without stopping.

They were done at 9:30 when I paid the bill. My estimate for the move was $195 and it cost me $490. There is no law that said I had to use their stuff to cover the furniture but I was forced to. There were charges for hours that were unnecessary but because they still had my stuff for storage, I paid. Then the lead mover asked how much I was going to tip them. I was appauled (especially when I saw him using my hairbrush in my bathroom) but they were clear that they would be tipped. I gave them $60 and he was not happy with that but I told him that was all I had.

4-16-04 I called Casey because I was worried about my stuff because I knew the mover was mad. He told me that it was fine. I told him about the movers and their behavior and he gave me back to Diane, I told her and she asked me what did I want her to do about it. I then told her that there was a box that was placed in storage that should not have been and that I would need to come and get it. She told me that it would cost $95 an hour for 3 hours for someone to get into the storage. I told her that was crazy. I had FREE storage, she said it is free but you have to pay to get it out. Especially when I had all the storage boxes clearly marked so other boxes would not get mixed with it. She then got nasty and told me that is the way it is and basically if I didn't like it too bad.

THis move could have been handled by two people in less than 3 hours with the stuff I had to move. I should have just spent $29 on the U-Haul. The mover was on his cell phone and just delaying everything to get extra hours out of me.

I have checked my contract again that states that I have to pay $35 with 7 days notice to access my storage. I called Daine on Apr 20th to let them know that I will be there on May 3rd to pick up my belongings and that I was only paying the $35, not $95X3 hours. She said she would notify dispatch. IF I have any problems with getting my stuff out of there, or if ANY of it is damaged, I have my lawyer on stand-by and I will sue the pants off of them.

I have been in the military 17 years and dealt with lots of movers, but these are the most crooked, nasty men I have ever dealt with and I will not tolerate being taken advantage of in this way.
