DPI Energy is a legitimate company in Texas who sells telephone services. However, there is an individual, or group of individuals, who are sending out fake checks from the company trying to scam you.

I received a letter in the mail (no return address on the envelope and post marked in Canada) with a check for $4950.00. The letter claims that I was entered in a Merchant International Christmas cash give away for a prize because I used my credit/debit card in the month of Nov. There are lots of grammatical and punctuation mistakes in the letter as seen below in the direct quote. The letter claims the check enclosed is a "cashier's cheque", but its not. It also mentions the $4950 check is to assist you in paying the processing cost associated with winning the prize. Also, it gives a dead line for claiming the winnings.

It goes on to say "Please be advised, that your winnings have been deposited with the Claim Processing and Payment Center in New York, Due to the complex nature of the data from which this lottery series was drawn, we advice you to keep the information of your winnings secured, until your claim have been processed and your payment remitted to you, as this is an integral part of our security protocol to avoid multiple claims or unwarranted abuse of the program by other contending ticket holders."

A phone number is provided to claim your winnings, but the phone operator won't even talk to you if you've not deposited the check in a bank account. I am assuming that once you deposit the check, the scammers take money out of your account for the "processing fees". I took the check to ACE Check Cashing and they confirmed that the check was fake. Do Not Deposit or Cash the check using your bank account!

There is another rip off report regarding this same scam, however the company names (((Redacted))) were used instead.
