I have had several issues with this school from day one of registration, well day 2 when you are not able to drop your course for A FULL REFUND. First off I was lied to by enrollment councelor and financial aid to get me enrolled. I was told I would receive free books for my program, then upon enrolling told i did not qualify due to not being  gcu STUDENT.

Upon finding this out went rhough all charges that I would be charged and what I would be eligible for in financial aid etc. I was "misinformed" several times. I was told no charges for books first quarter- that was a lie- was charged 80 bucks for nothing- no book was needed for course and was told well there is some web instruction- I THOUGHT THIS WAS INCLUDED IN THEIR $480 DOLLAR CHARGE PER CREDIT HOUR! Then told I would receive so much overage to attend this school- but found out that it was over 5000 less per year then they originally stated-

The other thing that really blew my mind is I was told for my first 6 credits or financial aid period i woulod receive a stipend for a 6 month period to help with school fees (my loans) then I only received 2400 and they kept rest in an accoumt claiming i must take another course to be par with financial aid. When I told them I would be dropping out of their school after completing 6 credit hours- they claimed I could not and would not be ok with financial aid at another school. I called federal goverment loan department and explained what was going on-

The rep called the school's financial director and come to find out- I could drop the course     AND WAS CONSIDRED A FULL TIME MASTERS DEGREE STUDENT WHO HAD COMPLETED 6 CREDIT HOURS AND WAS OK TO GO TO ANOTHER SCHOOL FOR FINANCIAL AID. hERE IS THE OTHER KICKER : I was told I could either keep or return my loan money for the loan period. At this point the school still has not refunded my loan money and fails to return my calls! Do not ever go to this school! They claim to be a christain school...but it appears they DO NOT RUN THEIR UNIVERSITY IN A CHRISTIAN MANNER!!!

Michelle!

Thanks for responding so quickly. As of today 2/9/2012. I did receive a stipend, but only the UNSUB $1,209. This was after I contacted my financial counselor a week prior(2/3/2012) asking if I would receive the SUB and UNSUB credit as a stipend, in which she indicated that I would. There were so many lies and misinformation that I have been told, I can not even begin. I have a credit of $2060 on my account, just sitting there. I was informed today that as a graduate student I must complete 6 credit hours within 16 weeks, as a criteria and the credit of $2060 pays for my upcoming class in April huh? . It's a bunch of B.S. I also have attended another school and have never been in this situation. My financial aid counselor, Al( last name) lied several times. With the most recent of her discussing with me the policies and expectations of my financial aid on 1/13/2012, which was a BIG LIE! 1/13/2012 is my birthday and I was out of town. I spoke with no one from GCU on that day. Thanks for your advise, best of luck to you at Walden! I will be looking for another university!

Re: similar situation

Dear GCU student:

Hopefully this information can help you- First generally it takes about 2 weeks for the federal government to send the school the funding from loans. Then generally it can take another 14 days for the school to cut the check. GCU does not offer direct deposit (which I find odd), but because of this reason it will take an additional 2-7 days dependant upon where you live to receive your loan money. I am assuming you are a masters degree student- it may be different for undergrad- I never had any issues like this at any other school. I have had to wait in the summer time for loan money because summer is when the federal government starts over the new school year for funding and nothing goes out until July 1st-however at the university I went to previously you were able to go to student services and ask for some of your loan money (fronted) until the funding was available.

I would continue to call your financial aid advisor and if you have not heard back within 48 hours I would consult with another peerson in finacial aid or ask for management. You are paying for your schooling, you have the right to know where your loan money is and what you are paying for. Hopefully your loan officer is not Jessica (hyphenated last name)..She was one that mislead me several times.

IF YOU WANT MY ADVICE: I would complete your 6 credits if a masters degree student and switch universities. I switched to Walden-its cheaper and for my program they offered free books! So good luck on your journey and if I can help you anymore email me at mc401705@ohio.edu.

Similar Situation

AUTHOR: KeKe30 - (United States of America)

Hi Michelle

I just read your report and I think I'm in a similar  situation. I just began classes on January 19th and still hadnt received a stipend check. How long did it take for you to receive a stipend check? Ive never experienced this before at a prior school I attended. I have a total stipend of 3200 that is supposed to be mailed to me, but on my account it states UNSUB 1200 and has a balance still pending of 2000. My financial advisor dodges my phone calls and NOONE can give me a straight answer.

Grand Canyon rifoff- re: ex employee- doctoral student

AUTHOR: michelle - (United States of America)

POSTED: Saturday, January 14, 2012

To the AUTHOR: EducationDoctoralStudent - Phoenix (United States of America)- whom commented on my post!

What is pathetic is you are commenting on a pst and telling me that I could not even get what I paid in tuition right- Then you are also referring to wanting to use the school to buy shoes, upgrade my interior rtc. and as being pathetic- What is truly pathetic is your comments when you have no clue!

First off when I am paying for a loan and the school is keeping over $2000 in their account- that is ridiculous- they have kept it since October and I am paying interest and fees on this loan. I am not some twenty something college student who has no bills or one who does not accrue cost by getting my education. I am paying for it and all of it. I am well aware of what I must pay back. I took the loan out- I expect to get the stipend I am paying for and not for it to sit in some universities account -while I pay interest on it. I am sorry $2481 for six months of school as a loan is not much to cover school costs, daycare costs so I can do my work- Also Just a heads up here is my university bill- I paid $480 per credit hour- So prior to making accuzations and assumptions, maybe you should check yourself! Maybe you should do your homework and double check on your comments prior to making comments and making yourself look ridiculous. Maybe you should think twice on being a doctoral student. The other funny thing is I never said what degree program I was in- tuition can vary dependant on the program-

#1 UPDATE EX-employee responds

It's all about the vig...

AUTHOR: EducationDoctoralStudent - (United States of America)

POSTED: Friday, January 13, 2012

Your complaint sounds like you're more focused on what kind of stipend this college can send you.  After working in higher ed for years, I've seen too many students take out large stipends to "pay their loans" only to discover the money they used to "pay their loans" had to be paid back as a student loan.

The student loan payback period begins 6 months after you finish school.  So while you may "pay your loans" (see: live off stipend, get new cell phone, upgrade to the leather interior, buy that cute pair of shoes you always wanted), you only build more debt.

After they realize this, the same students who "pay off thir loans" complain that it's (insert name of school)'s fault that they have such high student debt and expect the 'fedral gummint' to fix it for them.

Pathetic.

P.S. I just checked CGU's website and catalog.  In your complaint you didn't even get the tuition amount correct for a Master's program.  Are you from ASU?
