I was referred to Great American Van Lines via Vanlines.com.
I called the company the first week of November and received a moving quote from Rebecca. I was quoted $1,037 for the move as long as the items listed were accurate. I spoke to other moving companies that suggested I request a binding
quote because the quoted amount was far too low. I received a binding quote stating the amount was valid as long as the movers were moving the items on the list. When the movers showed up 45 minutes late on the day of my move all of
the tricks and scheming began. The mover claimed Rebecca apparently made an  error with the quote because the amount she quoted me was far too low. The mover them put me on the phone with Tony, the worst manager in the world, who
tried to tell me they would charge me a flat rate of $1,700 to prevent high fees from going over the square footage or pounds. FYI, my binding quote is for items, not pounds. I tried to tell Tony I was not quoted for pounds or square
footage, but items; however, the continued with their madness. I told them I would wait and see what my items weigh because I knew my items were 3,136 pounds when I moved in June 2011 and should be less now because I got rid of
over 33% of my items.

I informed Rebecca via email and telephone that I wanted to have someone present at the weigh station because I no longer relied on the company for accuracy. Rebecca never returned my call or email. After calling the company
for four hours without anyone picking up or answering my call, they called me and claimed my items weighed 3,380 pounds and the bill was $1,589. I asked how that was possible; at $0.38 per pound my bill should have been $1,264.40. They
claimed I was quoted $0.38 per pound for 2,730 pounds and anything over that was $0.85 per pound. Once again, I was never quoted on pounds, only items. So I asked, where is this information regarding the $0.85 per pound and Tony
claimed it was in the document I signed days before. The document I signed days before should have only revised the moving address. Apparently, they switched from the binding quote and added all the additional information after I changed
the address. After comparing the previous documents, I realized that is when they switched from per item to per pound and added the $0.85 per pound rate.

As if their ripping off wasn't enough, they also lied about my delivery date. I was told to expect my items on Saturday, December 17, 2011. After speaking with them on Friday to confirm the delivery, they claimed no you will not receive
your items until December 20th or December 21st.

If you can avoid it, please do not use this company. They lie about everything.

Legal Department if Misinformed

Thank you for your response. You are the most level-headed and professional individual I have had communication with at your company. However, I have several issues with your view of the transactiosn that took place. In response to your rebuttal, I would like to state the following:

  1. Binding quote - As I stated in my initial report, I received a binding quote for $1,037. According to my conversation with Rebecca, the sales representative, the amount was not supposed to change as long as the items listed on the quote were correct. The items provided during my initial telephone call  were accurate when the movers arrived with the exception of two things: (1) The quote was for 30 medium boxes, but I only had 26 medium boxes and 2 small containerss that were smaller than medium boxes; (2) the movers included two pictures that I told them could be left behind because I was not interested in taking them. Are you saying the addition of two pictures increased my quote by more 50% changing it from $1,037 to $1,589? Are you serious?

  2. Weight v. Space - As I stated in my initial report, I received a binding quote for the items listed. My quote was never based on pounds.

  3. Delivery date - I had numoerous conversations with Rebecca about my delivery date. She promised I would receive my items on 12/17/11. If I had known you would keep my items 9 days past that date, I would have made different lodging arrangements. My delivery date did not change until your company had my items in yyour possession. Additionally, I have an email from Tony Gonzalez stating my items would be here no later than 12/24/11. Tony got upset about my complaint posted on this site and purposely held my items past the Christmas holiday in an attempt to be nasty. To make matters worse, he called my cell phone numerous times on the evening (items were not delivered until 11:00 pm) my items were delivered and called me a "b***h" three to four times because I called the police when the movers got here.

If you represent the legal department for your company, you should contact the client for clarification about the issues at hand. I am more than happy to provide you with documentation supporting anything I said.

Tony Gonzalez's Vegenance

AUTHOR: Mad Consumer - (United States of America)

POSTED: Saturday, December 24, 2011

As of 12/21/11, Tony Gonzalez, the general manager, found my report on Rip Off
Report and refuses to deliver my items as promised. As I stated before, I
initially received a promised delivery date of 12/17/11 which changed to
12/20/11 or 12/21/11. After Tony Gonzalez found my complaint on the Rip Off
Report site he has threatened to hold items until he feels like returning them.
I explained to him that my daughter's Christmas items are on the truck and we
have been stuck sleeping on the floor because I can no longer afford to pay for
a hotel and he stated "that is not his problem". I told him I have an
email from him indicating my items would be delivered no later than 12/24/11;
however, he said that was the case until I filed a report on Rip Off Report.

Also, my daughter has contracted pneumonia and strep throat since we got here.
So not only does she not get a Christmas because Tony is upset about his
company's unethical business practices, she has to fight pneumonia and strep
throat from the floor of our empty apartment.

I contacted the Broward County Sheriff's Office today and they tried to contact
Tony without any success. If you have or had problems with this company file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau, Florida Attorney General, Department of Transportation, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, and other consumer complaint sites. As of 12/23/11, the Department of Transportation has received 5 consumer complaints in 2011 against the company.
