Green Tree is the name of my mother's mortgage company or whatever. I put my name on the bill so I could do payments for her while she was at work and to be able to get help making a payment once. That was a few years ago. As was when I filled out a form to remove my name from the bill that I mailed to them, as I moved out over 3 years ago. Yet I have come to find out my name is still on the bill...
And I was wondering, they call my mother several times a day, and at work quite often. They are quite rude, and when they leave messages you can hear them frothing at the mouth.
I am currently unaware of the whole situation between my mother and them, but isn't it illegal to harrass someone at work? And my problem is they won't talk to me, even though my name appears on the bill, which it shouldn't be any longer. What to do? what to do...

Dean, you should probably let your mother...

handle the situation. You indicated that you didn't know what the relationship was between your mom and the mortgage company, but they aren't third party collectors. You might be able to find out how often they can call her from the net.

Other posters are right that even though your name may be on the bill, if it's not on the mortgage papers, they can't do anything to you.

Good luck to you and your mom.

if your name is on the bill

It's probably just in the address column. The debt cannot be assigned to you unless your credit was leveraged in securing the loan (which from your description it sounds like it wasn't).

As for calling at work, the difference between harassment and fair collections is that we don't want to beat you up and call you names - we just want the payment. If you actually owe the money, how is it harassment for us to ask you for it?

I'm not saying you personally owe the money, I'm just giving an example.

Any questions should be directed to 1-877-606-7483.

Did you sign anything?

Did you sign anything to "put your name on the bill"? If you did, possibly the mortgage has been refinanced into both of your names and you are now equally responsible to pay it.

You can pay anyone's mortgage, car loan, utility bills, etc. for them without "putting your name on the bill." Simply send in the payment and designate their account number on it. This does not obligate you to pay any further bills in the future. With less reputable companies you may want to use a money order or Western Union wire so they can't trace it back to you and hit you for more money later.

Having many friends who have to deal with these jerks, I can tell you this. To stop the phone harrassment at work, you need to send them a letter telling them to stop calling your mom at work. Make sure you make copies of this letter and send it certified with a return receipt. Knowing these shysters, they would try to say they didn't get the letter. If they still call at work after receiving the letter, then you need to call your DA and report it to them. I have found that your states DA office is a wealth of information. Have they put negative reports on your credit? If they have you can dispute them. Make them prove the debt is yours. Hope this helps you and I'm sorry that some people are so rude on this sight.

If it was within my abilities at the moment I would. lol I love the pun.
Anyway, upon readin my own message I feel that it was a mistake to write as if this were a blog or forum or whatever. I hardly recall posting the message as it is due to not being able to sleep and my psychotic disorder messing with me, I guess I better just lose all hope, go back to doing things myself instead of attempting to seek guidance as it seems all I ever find is condescending remarks from some person or another.
Appreciate what this site is for, and sorry I inconvenienced everyone by writing this message as well. If the site moderator would kindly remove this message completely I would be much obliged.
Thanks for the sympathy, empathy and concern Steve. Wouldn't have realized I had wrote this message about Green Tree if you had not rebuttled.

My first guess....

"What to do?"

Pay the mortgage to get it current? That is my first guess. Maybe I am going out on a limb here.
