Beware Taxpayers,
I got my 2001 taxes done at H & R Block. The taxpayer had all of the proper paperwork to adequately complete my tax returns.

In September of 2003, I received notice from the IRS regarding my 2001 filing. It turns out the H & R Block "forgot" to put a small retirement distribution fund on my 1040. This showed up as earned income, not reported.

I took my complaints to H & R Block, but there was no avail. They say, they guarantee their work. It's a lie, I am only being offered a refund and the 100 dollar penalty fee that the IRS assessed.

If I had purchased the "peace of mind guarantee", the whole IRS notice would be paid in full.

I think that H & R Block preparers are incompetent, and worthless. They charge an astronomical fee for such a simple task. They do not hold up to their standards, and do not help their customers.

Whacko! astronomical fee

AUTHOR: Larry - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, July 12, 2005

Christopher says H&R Block charged him an astronomical fee for performing the simple task of preparing his tax return. If preparing his tax return was so simple, why did he pay someone else to do it for him? And why on earth would he pay such a high price if it was such an easy job?

Christopher does not explicitly claim that he presented evidence of his retirement distribution to Block. He states that The taxpayer had all of the proper paperwork to adequately complete my tax returns. (I assume that he meant the tax preparer rather than the taxpayer.) But since Christopher is not capable or preparing his own tax return a simple task how would he know what paperwork Block needed? Maybe Christopher did present his 1099 to Block and Block ignored it or maybe the 1099 was never presented to Block in the first place.

Regardless as to who failed to report what to whom, Christopher now complains because Block offered only to refund that astronomical fee plus pay the entire penalty assessed by the IRS. What more could they possibly owe this idiot? Does he think Block is now obligated to put his kids through college or send the family on a trip to Hawaii?

Christopher owed taxes on his retirement regardless of who prepared the return. By refunding the fee and paying the penalty, Christopher is put in the same position he would have been in had he prepared his own taxes. Block's offer of a refund and payment of penalty is more compensation than Christopher would ever get if he were to sue in court.

Christopher indicates that Block offered a peace-of-mind guarantee for an extra cost and that he chose not to purchase it. Now he complains that Block will not honor the extra-cost guarantee that he did not purchase. This guy is a whacko!

Having tried several other options to prepare taxes but never H&R Block I now recommend Turbo Tax for state and federal income taxes. But even Turbo Tax cannot prepare a correct return if information is omitted.

H & R Blocked!!!!! unreported funds

AUTHOR: Byron - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, July 12, 2005

I totally understand how you feel. I have just received a letter from the IRS about my 2001 taxes that were done by H & R Block. The IRS is telling me that I owe them $926.00 for some unreported funds that weren't in my taxes. I took it back to H & R Block and they reviewed it and then they also saw the error and said that I only owed $70.00. Then he looked at it again and then said that I owed federal $682.00 and the state owed me $269.00? What in the hell is going on????? I filed the admenment and now sending my taxes to get reviewed by my family accountant.

Fair enough

AUTHOR: Gladys - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Thursday, April 14, 2005

Standard Guarantee from H & R Block states that if they made an error and if you owe penalty and interest due to their error that they will pay that penalty and interest. That Standard Guarantee is included at no additional charge on every return they prepare. They are going above and beyond if they are offering to refund your tax preparation fees.

Peace of Mind is a special program at an additional charge and it is offered before the completion of the return. Lots of folks turn it down because they think their return is 'simple' and that they won't need the additional benefits, and don't want to pay for any 'extras'.

I am puzzled as to why you didn't notice that your retirement distribution wasn't included in your return at the time you reviewed it with your preparer. Sorry if you had a bad experience, but I think they are being fair with you.
