I was shopping for an engagement ring for my girlfriend when I drove past this shopping center mall on route 4 in Paramus, NJ, I decided to pull in and I saw a booth directly in front of the store, I grabbed a card they are called Haniken Jewelers; I spoke with Chris Haniken and told him the kind of ring I was looking for He told me he was about to get married himself and we hit it off during our conversation so I decided to try and do business with them.

I told him what I was looking for and when he started pulling out several rings that had nothing to do with my description I started to worry. He got his father involved and they told me they can custom order anything. I asked him how much extra is custom ordering a ring they replied with they have payment options to fit anyone and can work with any budget therefore I shouldnt worry about anything.

I proceeded to give them exactly what I needed for the ring description and they said to check back in 2 weeks so they can show me what they can come up with. I showed up in 2 weeks and was so disappointed at what they produced (a rubber ring mold that they said would eventually be my ring design after the jeweler crafted it) I wasted two weeks to get shown a rubber molding Sam told me come back in another 2 weeks so he can get some diamonds from the jeweler 2 or 3 different ones to show me with the band this time.

I showed up in 2 weeks to find out Chris is away on his honey moon and that I needed to come back again in another 2 weeks to see the diamonds and band I was about to get engaged and they already wasted more than enough of my time. I started asking price Sam told me 10,000.00 after negotiating- $8,500 and wanted most of it up front or in a few payments this was not how the conversation started 2 visits ago. They ran me around and expected when I got tired I would just cough up all the money..Really scum behavior.

Chris originally told me he could help me out with the payments and less than a thousand down and when the time came for me to make a deal for the ring they scammed me into paying for the whole thing up front after running me around for 6 weeks and also telling me the diamond I chose would not be the diamond I would end of up getting even with a deposit because they need to return the rings back to the dealers. (So why show me anything at all then why waste my time)

The last thing that really bothered me is that he showed me rings people have been paying on for months even one for years (in the beginning) because I asked from the start will you work with me on the payments At the end of the whole ordeal they refused to try and work with me over a short time (4 6 Months) to get the ring I really loved for the person I loved, Very rude people. Stay Away!

Haniken Jewelers responds to report #751413

AUTHOR: JT - (USA)

POSTED: Thursday, March 22, 2012

Haniken Jewelers prides itself on providing outstanding value and a excellent customer service experience, and while the overwhelming majority of our clientel will attest to this, every so often - someone comes along whom you try to help, try to work with, go out of your way for, but no matter how much you try to work with them, there is just no pleasing them.  such is the case with the person who filed this report.

The factual details of this matter are are follows. We had a couple come into the store looking for a Fancy Yellow diamond with a specific halo style setting. When the guy showed me a picture of what he was looking for, we took out rings in our stock that are similar to the style but not identical so he can get an idea of what he is looking at and not just a picture. We told him any ring can be done and can be made, so any picture he had can be made identical if we do not have the ring in our showcase. When asking about the price, we told him we would work out a deal according to the center diamond he chooses.

Our policy as most stores have is a 60 day Lay Away, when the customer and seller settle on a price the customer has an option of leave a deposit as a down payment to pay it off slowly. This 60 day Law Away is posted on all our law away slips as well as receipts since we have been in business which is 15 years. When the customer mentioned he might need a little longer and how our Law Away program works, we explained and told him if he is almost done paying withing 60 days we can extend it to 90 days which would make it 3 months lay away. No money or deposit or transaction was made or ever was made during this process with this customer.

He seemed happy that we can work out a deal with him so he asked for us to get him a ring that would be similar to the picture. Now the Rubber thing that he is referring to is a costume made wax which we make for custom orders. This wax costs us $200.00 that we pay ourselves to try and make the sale, we make a wax that is the same exact shape, style, and thickness of the ring the customer is looking at. This was done all with no deposit or transaction of any kind. We could have easily asked for a deposit to start the order but no deal was done yet for us to ask for a deposit so we took a chance on making a wax to show the customer.

During this time, the customer was free to shop and get prices any where else, no deposit was made so he was not stuck dealing with Haniken Jewelry, he had any right to go shop around and not even show up to us again. After the setting we told him we can get a couple of Fancy Yellow diamonds for him to look at. We asked him to give us a couple of weeks to get the specific size and shape he is looking for. As the customer has said my wedding was around the corner, almost two weeks went by and we did not find the right diamonds to show the customer, he was happy for me getting married and said he will come in after I get back in two weeks to show him the diamonds.

When I got back we had approx. 3 diamond to show the customer, after he decided on the diamond he liked, he spoke to my father, Sam about the prices and they settled a deal at $8,500.

Up to this point still no deposit of any kind was made. We have customers all day asking us to get them diamonds and never show up, we bring customers diamonds and rings to try and make a sale. We never require a deposit before any deal is made.

When Sam and the customer settled on the price, the customer came in to leave a $500 deposit which is more than enough for any deposit as most of our law away deposits range from $200-$1,000 just to start the process. When the customer came to leave a deposit I found out my dad would not accept the deposit because the customer mentioned he might need close to 6 months to pay for the ring. These diamonds being fancy yellow and rare are very tough to come by and suppliers need very quick payments for us. A 3 months lay away is do able but when the customer asked for 6 months my father told him he would not be able to help him out with the 6 months because we would have to come up with the money to pay the supplier in 1-2 months. The customer got annoyed because he said we would help him out, which we told him we would help him out as best as we can by giving an extra month law away.

When I got into the store the next day and was explained what happened the customer was waiting for my call. I had called the customer and mentioned that a 3 month lay away was the best we can do, I also mentioned that if the supplier I work with would accept a longer payment that what ever extra time he gives me I would be more than happy to give my customer. I ended up calling my supplier and my supplier needed 2 months payment in full. I told the customer being a Fancy Yellow diamond the supplier need quick payments so the 3 month law away to pay off the ring full would be the quickest which is a month longer than our policy. We always give the customers and extra month than our suppliers give us. I also mentioned to him if he would want to switch the diamond to a Natural White diamond I can push the law away to 4 months because white diamonds are easier to deal with than fancy yellow. The customer was not pleased that I would not give him the 4-6 months to pay off the fancy yellow and mentioned that if I do not give him the time he needs to pay off the ring he will go on the internet and write bad about Haniken Jewelry. I told him I never want to lose any sale and I do not want anything on my name online but this is our store policy and if we can not work out a deal I did try my best. I got the customer a wax model of the ring he is looking for, we got him the diamond that he wanted, and we kept it in the price range he wanted, we did our best to match the time table for his payment but 4-6 months for an item like this is longer than what we can do.

During the hole process no deposit was made and no money was taken, all this was done to try and make a sale, the customer had any right to leave, not answer us, not call us, and shop around.

Thank You very much Joe, again I appreciate anything you can do for us. Let me know if you need anything else.

Thank You

Sam & Chris
