Car buying at Harrisburg, Hyundai

I visited the dealership on May 28, 2008 to look at vehicles. I was approached by a salesperson who was a fairly new salesperson and he left me know this upfront. We worked out a deal that I thought was a pretty fair deal on a 2009 Hyundai Sonata 4 cylinder. They gave me what I wanted for my trade-in. But it took way too long to complete the deal. I was there from 10 AM until 5 PM. Unfortunately I did not read the contract close enough because I was exhausted from being there all day. After I left, I saw that I had been taken across. We negotiated a sunroof in the price of the car. The salesman told me they would have to jack up the price of the car to cover the sunroof and promised to reflect this price in the trade in value so the sunroof would not cost me extra. This was a lie. They jacked up the price of the car but did not adjust my trade in value. In other words, I paid for the sunroof. I also had told the finance person that I wanted no extras, such as extended warranty, GAP insurance, tire & wheel, security guard and simonize. I thought the simonize was part of the package, only to see they charged me for it and GAP insurance. Another charge they added was $427.50 for Public Officials. Normally this would be tags, title, and taxes, but this had already been included in the upfront cost of the car. I returned to the dealership to discuss these charges. No one could explain what the Public Officials fee is for. I was told this is something all banks do (another one of their lies). I called the bank and they told me they do not fill in any amounts and they don't know what this is for. They said the dealership fills in those amounts. I have since made 2 trips to the dealership, one on June 4, 2008 and the other June 18th and spoke with two different people in regards to these charges. I signed a waiver on June 4th, 2008 for the Gap Insurance and was told they would refund that amount. But as of this date I have received nothing. On June 18th my brother and I returned to the dealership and ask to see the manager. The man who came out and introduced himself as the manager claimed he was also new to the area as he came from Ohio. When asked to explain these charges he could not do so. He said where he came from they did not have these charges. He disappeared to "get answers." Then he came back out and said the manager (I thought he was the manager and suddenly he was not the head manager) was in a meeting (their standard answer when you ask to see someone). He left again and then he came back and said the manager was not there. After stalling us for another hour or so, he said he did not have answers for us. He said they would send a check for the Public Officials charge but it would take about six weeks to get it. Later he said it had already been sent (another lie). My brother gave him two options, either to refund my money for these services, as well as the cost of the sunroof or we would take it to the Attorney General's office. He extended his hand to my brother and said make your phone call, in plain words he was telling us they plan to do nothing. I will be filing a complaint with the Consumer Protection Bureau.

If I had researched this company before I purchased a vehicle, I would have never have bought from them. After reading all the ripoff reports (unfortunately after the fact), I called the Better Business Bureau and found 31 complaints filed against them. I have no complaints on the vehicle itself, but I do feel that Harrisburg Hyundai has ripped me off. They are known for bait and switch tactics and they certainly operate in an unethical manner. I would warn everyone to stay away from them as they are very shrewd. I trusted my sales person because he seemed like a fair and honest person. He too said he didn't know what went wrong with the deal. But, he wrote the deal and knew what was on the papers. He should have gone over all those figures with me. He also knew he made the sunroof part of the deal and should have straightened that out. So, he was party to all the lies. He said he was sorry to hear how unhappy I am and hated to hear the fact that I would have no good words for the dealership. But he has not offered to follow thru and straighten this out.

They also offer free tires for the life of the car. But from what I have read on this website, it looks like they don't live up to that promise either. My advise is STAY AWAY FROM HARRISBURG HYUNDAI!
