In February of 2002, we purchased a bed, nightstand, dresser with mirror, dining room table with 6 chairs, child's bedroom set and entertainment center totaling over $6,000. The first delivery went like this: damaged armoire (not the entertainment center purchased), wrong leaf for dining room table and 4 damaged chairs, the mirror to the bedroom suit was plastic instead of wood which was never disclosed, the chair to child's furniture was orange instead of natural wood.

The armoire was returned without a replacement purchase along with the bedroom furniture. We did trade the bedroom furniture for a more expensive brand. We were told by a technical worker with Haverty's that the dining room table and chairs would have to be completely replaced because they are sold as sets instead of individual pieces. The child's desk chair has been replaced 3 times (with orange chairs) and finally a tech sprayed it to the correct color in my home.

The second delivery went something like this: new dining furniture and bedroom furniture were delivered several weeks later. The dining room table and 4 chairs were damaged as well as the mirror to the dresser had a broken piece that had been glued back on incorrectly. The bed's support was atttached improperly so the tech's had to come out to fix but in the meantime the sideboards did not fit the bed correctly.

So, at this point, I have a nightstand and 2 dining chairs that are not damaged. Gifts certificates offered by salesperson but never received in the mail along with lots of promises that they were going to get it corrected--whatever it takes. Also, keep in mind that I am having to call to check the status on a regular basis and never received an apology from any store manager.

These are the results of the third delivery several weeks later: mirror to dresser was cracked down the side, footboard and sideboards were not stained properly and cannot be fixed by techs, dining room table is not stained properly (non-repairable according to techs) and 3 dining room chairs are damaged.

At this point, I realized a competitor was selling the items at a much lower price so I called our salesperson who begins to tell me their policy is a 30 day price gurantee. I just laughed and called the manager. I let him know the merchandise was returned and repurchased with every trade-in according to my credit card records and I expected a full refund for the difference. He offered $400 credit to our account and $200 in additional gift certificates. Neither was ever received.

Our fourth delivery was (supposedly) handpicked by our salesperson which the mirror was again damaged, bed not replaced and dining room table and 3 chairs still damaged. At one point I was not sure that we had not received the same damaged merchandise twice. In the meantime, my neighbor discloses that she had 3 deliveries also before her damaged items were finally corrected. When I spoke to the salesperson she was very rude and argued that none of the pieces were damaged because she handpicked them along with the warehouse managers.

We contacted the same store manager to express our dissatisfaction with the merchandise as well as the treatment from his employee. We were assured it would be corrected since he would handpick our items and we would be compensated for our patience but as of today nothing has been delivered nor have we received any compensation or credits. When I called this morning, November 11, 2002, the manager said he thought he had taken care of our problems but would have to call me back later.

I know you are wondering why we have not sent all of it back and purchased from another company but the truth is we have tried. They have not been willing to accept our return without a trade. We agreed to give it one more shot since the manager had promised to handle it but his word was not worth anything obviously.

STOP! ..before you think about using the Better Business Bureau (BBB)... CLICK HERE to see how other consumers were victimized by the BBB's false or misleading information. Don't be fooled! It has been reported, when there are thousands of complaints and other investigations underway by authorities, the BBB has no choice but to finally give an UNsatisfactory rating to a BBB member business that is paying the BBB big membership fees every year. When a business is reported that is NOT a BBB member, BBB files WILL more likely show an UNsatisfactory rating, then reportedly shake down that company to become a member of the BBB. One positive thing about the BBB is, either way, if a business has an unsatisfactory rating with the BBB, you can be sure, the business is bad. But what about all those BBB member businesses that had complaints filed against them? Consumers never get to hear about them. What about the BBB advertising to the public? Is this a false and misleading perception they are giving about consumer confidence when dealing with a business? Click here to understand more of what consumers and business alike are saying about the BBB. You decide. ..Remember. The BBB membership is not earned, it's paid for!
