My wife and I were visiting from NJ with with our daughter and son-in-law and our two grandchildren in D.C. and I went out about 6:30 a.m. for early morning coffee. I drove into the parking lot in the Metro Plaza, 1407 East- West Highway in Silver Spring Maryland, walked about 400 feet to Duncan Doughnuts, was first in line, ordered 4 coffees and 6 doughnuts, walked back to my car and it was gone.  Only about 12 minutes had passed and I thought my car was stolen.  Called the Police and was told  that Henry's Wrecker Service waits until you walk off the lot and takes your car.  There are warning signs ( I usually equate warning signs for low hanging electical wires, falling rock etc.,, not Pirates who steal your car and extract a ransom from you.) that they told me about later.  What a Rip-off.  I can't believe that the City of Silver Springs condones this.  But they do.  According to the Police, some have tried to change the law that allows this, but was not sucessful.  This is legalized theft.   Henry's Wrecking Srevice is a very apt name.  They wrecked my day, my family's day and I am sure some other unsuspecting out of town vistor's day.  They are like vultures ready to swope in and grab any car that they can.

Henry's Wrecker Towing Service

AUTHOR: Tiger - ()

POSTED: Monday, July 01, 2013

In recent months I heard many complaints from friends about Henry's wrecker towing company and its ripoff. The night befor last, my car broke down and the police called for Henry's service. Just to tow my car for about 5 miles cost me $175.00. As a result, I tasted Henry's ripoff, for I think that was too much to tow a car withing 1 or 2 zip code zone(s). On the other hand, he police department has a contract with them knowing that Henry's charges are herandous. Since the police job is to help and protect the citizens not to aid in ripping them off, I feel that the police depart. is as guilty of a ripoff as Henry's Towing company, just by associating themselves with Henry. I heard that this towing company is owned by a former cop, so this must be "Goodies for Bodies". Taking advantage of the vulnerable should never be allowed in a land of justice. The other conspiracy Henry has with the police department is that if your car is in your building parking lot and has an expired license, Henry will tow it...I thing that is wrong!!! Henry should never play the roll of a police man. I know many people who suffered Henry's injustice and remained silent. Please write to Henry, to the police department, to the city and to your representatives. I will be doing all these in the next few days... someone gets to speak out and stop this ripoff.

How to avoid Henry's ripoff

AUTHOR: uncldvd - ()

POSTED: Wednesday, May 01, 2013

This happened to me.  While there are good towing services, I would not list Henry's among them.  My wife left her truck well off the road when it broke down in Manassas, VA.  According to the police, Henry's should not have been able to tow it.  That did not stop them.  They "troll" my parking lot looking for vehicles with expired tags.  My HOA approves of this and even has a contract with them.  My advice is to look for places where towing services are not allowed to go (there aren't many), or to make certain that you watch the signs around you and make sure that everything on your vehicle is up to date.

That still didn't stop them from towing my sister-in-law's car.  She updated her registration online on the very last day that her tags were good.  They gave her a printout that she placed in the dash, which was a temporary registration.  Henry's towed her car anyway.  Only because she saw it being done and ran after them did she avoid having to pay the "ransom" for her car.  That and she took her cell and told the tow truck driver that she was calling the police to have him arrested for grand theft auto.

I think it was apt for you to call them "vultures".

That is quite a two step.

You did quite a dance around the real reason you got towed.  First interesting how you said you were gone for "about 12 minutes".  That is quite a specific number for an approximation.

You got towed because you parked in another businesses lot.   Apparently the other business was tired of people just parking in their lot to go other places so they hired the tow company to enforce their PRIVATE PROPERTY rights.

Not only that, but they had warning signs up..which you ignored.  Perhaps this a case of you didn't think that the signs applied to you because you were only going to get some doughnuts and it was early in the morning?

According to the Police, some have tried to change the law that allows this, but was not sucessful.

- You may want to think about this statement.  As don't you think that should tell you all you need to know about who is actually in the wrong here.
