I booked a rental vehicle online with www.hertz.com prior to our vacation in Arizona. I prepaid the fee for 7 days, the fee was $379.37. When we arrived a the Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport to pick up the vehicle, we were sleep deprived. The customer service rep at the Hertz counter at Sky Harbor Airport in Phoenix started adding up all of the fees, one of which was $12 a day for an additional driver (my husband, who is on my car insurance policy). I told the rep that I have never paid for my spouse as an additional driver before. She told me it was in the fine print. I had my contract with me and read through it and told her I could not find that provision in the contract to charge for my spouse as an additional driver.

She looked through her paperwork and amazingly enough could not find that clause either, so she graciously removed the $84 charge. However I received a bill for $144.11. My husbant and I were tired and just wanted to get on the road, so I signed the agreement.

After we got on the road I read through what I was being charged for only to discover that of the five charges totalling $144.11, two of the charges were identical to what I already paid in the original contract. The other charges, for example; something called Concession Fee Recovery: I paid twice only two different amounts!

I have NEVER had to pay more at an airport when picking up a rental vehicle, because I have always booked and paid for it prior to arrival at the airport. I feel like I was ripped off.

I explained this to the gentleman when we returned the car. I had to sign the credit card slip at that time. He said he didn't know anything about it, but it was customary. I told him that some of the charges were doubled. He really didn't respond, and we had to get to the airport for our flight, so I had to let it go.

I need to know if there is anything I can do to recover my $144.11. I will never rent from Hertz again, in addition, I will tell everyone I know who is renting a car to avoid Hertz as well! This entire experience was disgusting!!!

Thanks to a consumer comment received; I reviewed my credit card statement online only to discover that Hertz did NOT charge me twice for the same fees! Everything is fine and I apologize for jumping to conclusions. I only wish all of this would have been explained to me at the airport when I received the rental car.

Thank you for steering me in the right direction. I would have discovered this eventually, however you put my mind to rest and I can forget about it. I appreciate this forum in which to express views and receive assistance!

Was your Credit Card Charged?

AUTHOR: Robert - (U.S.A.)

Most of the time the "Pre-Paid" rentals state that they may not include all taxes and fees. In this case you still owe any fees that would still be due just like you had paid for it at the rental counter.

In looking at the Hertz site it appears no different. It does LIST the fees that will be charged but states that it will only charge the ACTUAL rental rate at the time of booking. It does not charge for the taxes, fees, or extras and that the amounts listed for those are not guaranteed and subject to change.

So if you have proof that your card was initially charged for the actual rental AND the other fees have a good case for a dispute. But if your rental rate was $379.37 and that is what your credit card was charged it did not include the fees and taxes. In this case they were correct in charging you at the Rental Counter.
