I attended this school from Jan 1998-Mar 1999. The only loan I signed up with was the Direct Loans. In 2001, I received I recieved a letter from Cathy Odom claiming I owed $900 for a Perkins Loan. I remember the school trying to sign me up for one but I turned it down. So for almost 10 years I have been recieving calls and letters from the US Dept of Education claiming I owe for the Perkins Loan. It wasn't until I filed for my 2007 taxes at the Tax King Refund off that I found out my $719 refund was taken by the Dept of Education. I never recieved any letters or phone calls threatening to garnish my taxes. In fact every year when I file to the IRS, I ALWAYS get my refund! Even in 2004 when I filed with Tax King. Even though I recieved the same letters, and no garnishment threats, I still got my refund! The US Dpet of Education also sent wage garnishment threats to another women who used to live in the house where I now live. This woman has not lives there in about 8 years! I think the US DEpt of Education Collection Agency is purposely sending letters to old addresses just to say "they sent it". This collection agency has out SS#, so there's no excuse to send letters to old addresses! Beware of Herzing College and their loan scams! Perkins Loan is a private loan from the school NOT a government loan! Who knows? This school could have someone working on the inside at the collection agency to work the scam while they all split the money! This is why this school is in an old mall movie threater at this time! They were booted out of their eleborate office

Bankruptcy/Student Loans

AUTHOR: CamelotsShelinda - (United States of America)

POSTED: Sunday, January 24, 2010

Hello, I was really relieved to read your post. I am thousands of dollars in debt with student loans and the University of Phoenix. UOP put me through hell and that is a whole other post.

I am currently in the process of enrolling at Herzing Online for a Medical Billing Diploma. It was good to read your positive input as I am leery after what I what I went through with UOP.

I read your post regarding student loans on your bankruptcy and I was wondering if you could tell me more about it. I am going to file bankruptcy after my divorce is final and because of UOP taking me for so much money I will never be able to afford the loan payments. I have always heard that you can not include student loans on a bankruptcy. Any information would be helpful. Thanks

No need to be rude!

School has come a long way and just because you go to school online that does not make it a scam or ripoff.  There are many universities and colleges that provide online courses.  Even Ivy League schools provide online courses.  Some people will walk away from college without learning a thing and others will have learned a lot, this is true whether it is a brick and mortar school or online.  I think it is very easy for someone to walk away from an online course and learn nothing.  You must read through the course work and do the tests.

It is possible that the situation above happened and was identity theft.  The problem is the person is claiming that the school itself scammed them.  People commit identity theft not companies.  I never said the person was at fault.  They obviously say a loan was put in their name and they did not do it nor had any knowledge of it for 10 years.  Any loan hits a consumers credit immediately.  If your credit is not checked I guess you could miss the loan.  If a loan is not paid for though it does hurt your credit.

With all this being said I have an old co-worker that all of a sudden got collection notices from the US Department of Education Collection company.  She went to beauty school some 20-30 years ago.  She said it never showed up on her credit and also that it was paid off almost immediately after she got it.  She claims her ex-husband had gotten a lump sum of money and they paid it off in 2 large payments.  The collection agency also attached a garnishment to her.  She has called and written letters to try to take care of it.  No one can do anything for her without proof that she paid it.  This is something she thought was taken care of and she has heard nothing about all this time.  Also her ex has passed on, the bank is closed and she has no proof of her payments.  Who would think that you need it from that long ago.  I would think some sort of statute applies.  I am thinking the problem may not be the school.  Maybe the US Department of Education has messed some of their paperwork up or computers.  Why are these loans not showing up on people's credit all these years?  If you don't pay your credit should be hit immediately.  Just like when you default on any other loan, house, car etc..  I think the US Department of Education should be contacted, the school and anyone else to try and clear this up.  The more people you contact and raise crap with the more likely you can get your situation resolved.  Also there is no need to be rude, as I was not rude at all in my first post.  I was simply stating facts.  I am in upper management, have a few degrees, have filed my own bankruptcy and a friends years ago (I'm not a lawyer and got them discharged) and have been through the student loan process for over 4 years.  If this happened to me I would tell the Dept of Education that these were not mine and they need to fix them and also put alerts on my credit reports that they are identity theft.  Best of luck to you at getting the matter resolved.

Herzing and Loans

AUTHOR: Jane - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, June 24, 2008

1. The Perkins loan IS a Federal loan, not a Private loan. It is obtained through the US Dept. of Education. You can see for yourself at ed dot gov under programs.

2. You claim that someone at the school "tried to sign you up for one but you turned it down." Any loan would not be disbursed unless you had filled out an application and been approved! Come on!! I am no stranger to the student loan process. I am 29 years old.

There is no reason to call Herzing College a "scam". They are accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, which is a REGIONAL accrediting body. This same accrediting agency also accredits the University of Chicago, and Ohio State. You can verify this at ncahigherlearningcommission dot org.

The good thing about Herzing is that books are INCLUDED in the tuition. An admissions rep at the Orlando, FL campus verified this. Even community colleges make you buy books separately. The only problem with this is that you probably can't buy your books used, on Amazon, to save money. Maybe you can though.

Basically, make sure you have your facts straight before accusing someone of "scamming" you. Loans are not just given out. You have to APPLY, sign paperwork, and be approved.

Typical BS Sales Pitch! You were AN ONLINE STUDENT HONEY!!!!

AUTHOR: Sherry - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Monday, March 31, 2008

It doesn't matter what you can't see! Identity theft DOES HAPPEN and YES it did happen at Herzing College! You were NOT in an actual class you were TAKING IT ONLINE! So don't tell me that things like this can't happen! I on;y attended this school ONE YEAR!!!!! And THREE YEARS LATER I was contacted by letter of a loan I NEVER APPLIED FOR!!!! All it takes is for someone in the financial dept to sign up in your name! They have access to your name, SS#, birthdate and all kinds of personal information! This is why this school is at an old mall movie theater to this day! Identity Theft happens at well established colleges or any paying school! Just because you recieved your degree does not make my situation irrelevant or my fault!

Herzing College Alumni and current attendee

AUTHOR: Chrystal - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, March 28, 2008

I have attended Herzing College online since 2005 which happens to be through their Madison Wisconsin school and have never had a problem. I graduated with an Associate Degree in 2007 and have continued on with my education since then. I have several student loans and have never had a problem. Everything is disclosed to you because you must sign for all loans that you are given. Any personal loans would have to check your credit so there is no way you wouldn't know about them. Also lenders are required to send you a letter after your funds have been disbursed to the school.

For every loan I have received the funds have been disbursed to my school 1/2 first and then the other 1/2 within a few months. I have received a letter every time funds have been disbursed. I don't see how someone could go 10 years without receiving letters on their loan or without it being on their credit. All of my loans are through Wells Fargo Bank, subsidized and unsubsidized, and backed by the US government and they all are on my credit. Matter of fact they have appeared shortly after the first 1/2 was paid out to the school. It just doesn't make sense to me that this problem could have happened!
