This is a copy of the e-mail I sent to the Home Depot customer service center. I did get a reply back stateing they would have someone from the store call me, they never did. I remailed them and told them so, they said it would go to corporate now and some one would call me, still no call. I e-mailed them again, no response as of yet. I did try the customer service line since there is no address or phone number for corporate listed anywhere, but I was on hold for 1/2 an hour before hanging up.

I purchased a 10'x10' Princeton shed on 7/22/04. At no time did the salesperson nor the manager who was also assisting me inform me of any additional items that would be needed to complete the construction of the shed. I was informed that the partially assembled shed came in 2 large boxes/crates and would not fit in my small Ford pickup, so I would need it delivered or rent their truck. When the shed was delivered I found that it was 1 package the size of a sheet of plywood about 8? high (It would have fit on my truck).

After spreading half of the unassembled shed across my lawn and started to build it, I learned from the instruction manual that the flooring and roofing materials were not included. I have no problem putting the shed together, that's why I bought a kit and not a prebuilt shed. I do have a problem not being informed by the salesperson and manager that I needed to purchase additional materials. If I had known this at the time of purchase, I would have looked at a prebuilt shed. After paying $700 for the shed, I do not feel it was necessary or right to have to pay $50 for delivery (which I did not need) and another $200+ for flooring and roofing materials (which I should have been told were not included).

This was an extremely inconvenient situation that required additional trips back to the store, interruptions in my construction time, and more money than I wanted to spend. This problem would have been avoided if the salesperson/manager had been more informative. Something needs to be done so that future customers do not have the same situation happen to them.

I am very frustrated with this situation and hope that you can help alleviate this situation. In what way is Home Depot willing to reimburse me for this problem? I buy a lot from your store; feel it to be better than Lowe's, but I have never had the same situation happen to me at Lowe's.

Please feel free to contact me at any time at work 717-***-*** and/or my home at 717-***-*** if you would like to discuss the matter further. I have not gone back to the Home Depot since and the store is less than a mile from my house.

Read the ad information first

AUTHOR: DaveLadely - (USA)

POSTED: Thursday, October 15, 2015

As I recall, the ad said the floor was not included, as did words painted on the floor of the display model. Also, information about a single box was part of the ad as I recall.Ditto the roofing material (roof sheathing was included). This does allow the buyer to choose their own floor material and roofing material.  I used 3/4"  plywood from another project.  I also took up the suggestion the instructions to add four additional joists, for extra strength, a cheap way to get much more support for the floor.  I decided on a steel roof, with top venting.

The instructions come with the package.  "When all else fails, read the instructions", and read them over first as a prophylactic.

If the instructions had been previewed, the information about not inclluding the flooring and roof material was clear.  Since I wanted a strong floor and a steel roof, I did not want the company to choose these for me, and me pay for them.

I did do a bit of customization.  I used screws instead of nails throughout the construction.  That made it easier to fix any mistakes and also strengthened the fastening.   I also chose to buy two 12'- 2"X4" so that I could extend the roof another two feet.  I also ran a 2"X4" by 2' long from the rafter closest to the front, through the top of the front, so it would extend two feet at the peak of the roof.  I then bought 8 sheets of the random strand board, and ran them across the roof.  I did this for simplicity as the sheathing is cheap, and allowed me to extend the roof two more feet in front.  This way the front is protected from rain, and it looks much better.  I installed easy-to-clean vinyl flooring.   I also installed a home entry type lock as I do not like padlocks and hasps. The shed  looks great.  I next plan to add a couple used windows.

My frustration with home depot

AUTHOR: Johnson - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Saturday, October 25, 2008

This message is to all:
First, I would like to state my credential for why I've formulated such a strong opinion. I own a small drywall business, and am currently remodeling my house. I have a credit card with the store, and probably have spent at least 15,000 dollars in the last year or two at the store.
If you have not shopped at the Home Depot yet, you should take a special trip and see how well they run a home improvement business. First, you need to think of a project needed at your home, something that requires a tool purchase or two, and materials too. If you happen to get to the home depot at opening hours, 6 or 7 depending upon location, first make sure the doors are working properly opening and closing, unlocked to recieve customers upon arrival(Being in construction usually i need to get there early, and sometimes the doors are still locked). The next step would be to find a sales person--somewhere, anywhere. Then when you ask for help with getting a specific item or material, just accept whatever they offer you so that they will leave you alone to locate it yourself, because your better off. Most employees at the Home Depot have no experience whatsoever in the home improvement area. One will tell you one thing and others will tell you another. I think that managers and corporate executives could run a better store than I, but that is no excuse for what I have experienced and what I have seen and heard.
Lets get to the Drywall issues, for that being my niche. I dont think that they should make you load your drywall onto a cart if it is twenty sheets or less. Get the fork! Second, drywall finishers like HYDE brand of 4, 5 and 6 inch joint knives. They like to keep those in the paint section clear across the other side of the store, which if you dont know the store and cant find an employee you wont be able to find them. Put the good knives with the drywall tools, I swear your sales numbers will jump.
Lastly, I should say that I like your stores location, and I do shop there so I should shut up before they kick me out. All in all, I am just saying that maybe you could at least train your employees a little better, home depot, I know you are trying.

Response to Brian - avoid "rip off"

AUTHOR: Joseph - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Thursday, February 03, 2005

Brian,

I read you response carefully and rethought what had happened to me. I went back to the store and there was no flooring kits that I could find. In fact I searched for a notice that there would not be any flooring included with the shed. The inside display did not give this information but the sign on the shed out in the parking lot did, although in small print and I did go at night to order it.

As for why I wanted a reimbursed for the delivery, I did say the manager told me it would be in 2 large boxes that would not fit in my truck. The kits are not out on the showroom floor to read the models numbers nor information. It did come in a size that would have fit in my truck easily, I have carried more than that size and weight before. It was a unnecesary charge.

How to avoid a "rip off" at Home Depot or Lowe's

AUTHOR: Brian - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Wednesday, January 19, 2005

Joseph, and all.

The lack of customer service is definately a problem. The store manager (or an assistant) should have called you.

As to the shed, read the box. There will be no surprises if you become an informed consumer. The 2-box version was indeed a different shed that you saw at the store. Read the box (model number, etc) and you would have seen that your 10x10 does come in 1 box.

You asked for a 10x10 shed to be delivered, so why would you feel that you needed the delivery charge to be reimbursed? If they had damaged the shed during delivery, I could see a need for compensation.

The floor kits are always merchandised right next to the sheds in home improvement stores, and that should have been a clue to you that it might not be included.

The sense of entitlement amazes me.
