Over the Christmas holiday I received an e-mail from Home Depot promoting many items at good savings. One caught my eye ( model P704 Ryobi flashlight ) On Home Depots internet site the P704 Ryobi flashlight was also pictured. I ordered the Flashlight for instore pick up.  When I went to the store, I was given a Ryobi P700 flashlight and was told, "until we sell out of the old P700 flashlight you can not get the P704 flashlight unless you order from Home Depot and have them ship it to you."

I requested a refund and returned home to reorder the P704 as advertised flashlight, and have it shipped to my house, from Home Depot.

When I received the flashlight in the mail, I opened the box to find a P700 Ryobi flashlight inside.

If you do a search on these two flashlights you will see that P704 is a much better flasllight than the P700.

All I wanted was the Flashlight that was pictured. It is not like the picture and model number conflicted. The model number matched the picture.

Here it is, over 4 weeks since I complained several times to Home Depot and if you go to the web site you will see that it still shows the P704 flashlight. Try to get one. GOOD LUCK

Today I decided to order another P704 flashlight from Home Depot. Before placing the order I contacted the on line help to make sure that I would get the light as advertised. As you can see from the converasation below, Home Depot is very comfortable offering a lower value light as a substitute for the advertised light.

Please wait for a Product Specialist to respond.  Your average wait time is 1m:2sec.

Your place in Queue is '4'.

You are now chatting with 'SkyeLee

'SkyeLee: Welcome to The Home Depot. How may I assist you today?

Dennis: I am ordering a Model #  P704 Store SKU # 335443  Internet/Catalog SKU 100006806

Dennis: Is this the flashlight that I will be given at the store?

SkyeLee: I will be happy to check on that for you.

SkyeLee: May I have your zip code please?

Dennis: 16602SkyeLee: Thank you!

SkyeLee: Let me check that for you. It will just take a moment.

Dennis: Sure. take your time. thanks

SkyeLee: Thank you Dennis!

SkyeLee: Thank you for waiting Dennis.

Dennis: no problem

SkyeLee: Yes.  This will be the item you will pick up at your local store if you place your order online.

SkyeLee: Would you like to continue placing your order online while I stand by in case you need help? Although I will not see your screens or information, I can answer any questions you may have.

Dennis: Are you sure? as They have been substituting the P700 which is a lesser value light

SkyeLee: One moment please.

SkyeLee: If they are substituting, I would suggest calling your local store.  I would be happy to provide you with their contact information.  Would you like that number?

Dennis: No, what I want is the light that you are advertising

SkyeLee: One moment please.

Dennis: OK

SkyeLee: I'm sorry for the delay. I'll be back with you in just a moment.

Dennis: I will wait. Thanks

SkyeLee: Thank you Dennis!

SkyeLee: Thank you for waiting Dennis.

SkyeLee: I teamed with my Lead Supervisor about the P700.

Dennis: and?

SkyeLee: He stated that it is a new version they are compatible.

SkyeLee: The item P700 will be of like brand and performance of the item you are wanting to purchase online.

Dennis: You lead supervisor is not correct

SkyeLee: One moment please.

SkyeLee: I'm sorry for the delay. I'll be back with you in just a moment.

Dennis: I will wait

SkyeLee: Thank you for waiting patiently Dennis.

SkyeLee: I will not be able to guarantee the item online will be what you will pick up at your local store since they are substituting that item.

SkyeLee: I would suggest ordering it online to be shipped your home or business.

SkyeLee: I will be happy to waive any shipping fees.

Dennis: If I order on line I will have to pay shipping. Your web site shows the light I want and also tells me that there are 4 on stock in Altoona. Now you tell me that you will be giving me a cheaper light in place. What is wronge with this picture?

SkyeLee: I completely understand your point.

SkyeLee: I will waive the shipping cost.

Dennis: would your surervisor approve of me substituting a 10 dollar bill in place of a 20 dollar bill on my next visit to Home Depot?

SkyeLee: One moment please.

Dennis: Do you see my point?

SkyeLee: I completely understand.

SkyeLee: One moment while I check on other options.

SkyeLee: I can offer Express shipping.  You should receive this item within 3 business days.

Dennis: There is no need to spend extra on shipping. I can wait. I just want the advertised light, not a cheap substitute.

SkyeLee: I understand.

SkyeLee: I will be happy to waive the express shipping.  I would like for you to get the item you want that is advertised.

Dennis: How do I get it?

SkyeLee: One moment please.

SkyeLee: You would continue with the checkout process and select the Express shipping option on the "shipping methods' page in the drop down box for $8.94.  Once you have completed your order, you will get a confirmation order number beginning with a "W'.

Feb 23 update

AUTHOR: Denny - (United States of America)

POSTED: Thursday, February 23, 2012

About 2 weeks ago Home Depot sent me the correct flashlight at no charge.  I told them that I was not looking for anything free and that I wanted to pay for the flashlight. All I wanted was for them to either change their picture and discription to the light that they were substituting or start shipping the correct light. Here it is Feb 23rd and I just got off the phone with Stephanie J. of Home Depot Corp and she said that she would report the problem to the people who could make the change. Lets see if this works. After all, I have been reporting the problem to them for 8 weeks now. At what point and time do I make the decision and just accept the fact that they (Home Depot) approves of this type of marketing? Wonder how they would respond if I gave them a five dollar bill for a purchase of ten dollar value and told them that I was substituting my five dollar bills for tens.   hummmmm I might be on to something

I looked both up and I agree, the P700 is NOT

a reasonable substitute for the newer P704.  Hold them to their ad...you're right to expect to get what was advertised.

Is your advertising correct or not?

AUTHOR: Denny - (United States of America)

POSTED: Friday, January 20, 2012

This is my 4th attempt in a span of 5 weeks to get you people to correct your web page. All I want is to keep others from going through what I did.  If your web page is not correct, just say so and correct it. If it is correct, then sell me what you show on the web page.

If Corp office does not have the paper trail on all  of this, I do, including the names of everyone I have spoken to.

Ps:  The local store personal treated me very professional each time I returned the incorrect product.
