I purchased a reservation at a hotel through Hotwire knowing that there was a possability that my business trip could be cancelled. As you know, Hotwire refuses to refund your money which is why they offer "Trip Protection" just in case you need to cancel the trip.

Here's what happens if your trip is cancelled: I called Hotwire and they say "You'll have to call the insurance company." I called the insurance company and they say they can't refund your purchase unless you or someone traveling with you is dying in a hospital and you have to provide documentation from the doctor saying so." This of course isn't advertised when you buy the "Trip Protection Insurance."

When I disputed the amount with my Bank, they investigated and found they couldn't do anything because Hotwire clearly states that they don't give refunds. The bank can't go after the insurance company either because it's a third party transaction. I'm sure Hotewire makes a good commission on the sale of this bogus "protection" knowing full well that 95% of all trips aren't cancelled due to hospitalization.

Don't waste your money.

Hotwire also claims the reason they don't refund is because they purchase the reservations themselves and if you were able to cancel, they would be "out" their money. This is a lie. I called the hotel whom I had the reservation and they said that Hotwire could easily get their money back within 24 hours prior to the reservation date. You of course can't cancel the reservation yourself because you didn't pay them directly, Hotwire did. Hotwire could make this legit by placing this on their website: "Refunds for trips are available two days prior to reservation." but they don't. They take your money and run with it.

There is clear intent to defraud here - there is no mistake and they know exactly what they are doing. The way they have things written or not written on their website and the use of 3rd party transactions that leave the customer with no recours are clearly red flags that should be getting the attention of the Attorney General.

Buyer beware!

So just where do you get your stats

Hotewire makes a good commission on the sale of this bogus "protection" knowing full well that 95% of all trips aren't cancelled due to hospitalization.

-I really hope you come back and tell us where you get your statistics for this.

There is no fraud here, just someone who took a gamble and lost.  That's right even though you knew there may be a possibility of your trip being cancelled you purchased your reservation from a site that does not allow cancellations.  Then you thought you could get around this by purchasing insurance, but you failed to read what the insurance actually covered.  Oh and yes..you have FULL access to both the terms of the site and insurance BEFORE you make the purchase.

"Refunds for trips are available two days prior to reservation." but they don't.

- Your right they don't put that on their site..but here what they do say...

Can I cancel or make changes to my reservation?
...For all Hotwire Hot Rates, bookings are final and cannot be cancelled, refunded, exchanged, transferred, or changed, even for a fee. Hotel suppliers are able to offer their unsold rooms at discounted rates on Hotwire because we withhold their name until after the customer books and our reservations are non-refundable. These restrictions enable the hotels to better manage their unsold rooms, and are a big reason why we can offer you great deals. Also, credit cannot be given for any unused hotel reservations. Once you agree to make a booking on our site, your credit card will be charged for the total price shown — regardless of whether the hotel reservation is used. In order to make a booking on our site, you must agree to Hotwire's Terms of Use

For standard rates, cancellation policies vary by hotel, as well as room type. You can find your cancellation policy on your confirmation email or My Account page, and they are also available for viewing before you book.

If you are worried about emergencies that will require you to change your plans, you may want to consider purchasing Trip Protection - a low-cost insurance program that provides trip cancellation/interruption coverage. Trip Protection covers unexpected events such as medical emergencies, strikes, natural disasters and bad weather. Trip Protection does not offer coverage for change of plans due to non-emergency situations. You can purchase Trip Protection up until your check-in date.
