I filed my taxes with H&R Block last year and received the RAL loan with a refund of around 2500. So, I assumed I would be approved for the same loan as a returning customer. I only went to H&R Block to receive my money in 1-2 days. They took about 30 minutes or less as my information was already in the computer. The representative should tell you that you may not get the loan, but they don't because they know that is the only reason most of us are even there. I have done my taxes at home for the past 10 years with the exception of last year and only returned for the RAL.

The very next day I called and was told, like many others, I was not approved for the loan. So, therefore, they charged me 256.00 for doing absolutely nothing for me that I could not have done myself.

How can they actually charge fees this high? My return this year was only 914.00, which I will only see approximately 600.00 due to this company ripping me off by leading me to believe I would receive my money in 1-2 days; when you find out in less than 24 hours you have been denied the RAL load, GUESS WHAT -- THERE IS NOTHING YOU CAN DO BESIDES ACCEPT YOUR FATE!

What you can do

Change your exemptions on a W-4 form. Why are you giving the Government an interest
free loan?

Do your own taxes. It's not that hard. There are computer programs that walk you through
all of the entries.

The IRS web page gives plenty of places you can file for free in your AGI is under $54,000.

If you have a bank account, it's usually two weeks to get the refund after you file electronically.

Don't Blame the company because you are impatient.

As I have said in previous rebuttals to H&R Block complaints, I have never once used them for my taxes (even when I worked there) because I can do it myself and get my refund quickly via efile and direct deposit.
That being said, the RAL is a LOAN. If you don't qualify for the terms, the bank lets H&R Block know in about 24 hours. It is not usually an instantaneous decision.
As far as the fees go, they charge for the number of forms, etc. I can't speak to the amount of your bill because I was not the preparer.

Here's a tip for next time (if there is one) Before you go ahead and file the paperwork with H&R, have the preparer look over your return and give you an estimate of the charges. We had many clients do this when I worked there. If the fees are too much, just tell the preparer, take your documents, and leave. The preparer may be a little miffed at wasting time, but it is YOUR choice.
I would highly recommend going back to filing your own taxes. I did it this year online and got my refund very quickly. And the best part, no fees, no wondering if I was "approved" or not.
