So anyone who doesn't live in Washington D.C, and sees a number pop up on their cell phone from there might just be curious enough to answer the phone, right? Well, as soon as the guy told me that he was from the United States Treasury and I had been "selected" to receive a $9000 grant from the government because I'm in bankruptcy, I knew it was a scam. Since when has the government started just giving out grants that were never applied for? But I listened to what the guy had to say, just so I could catch him! He gave me a supposed money gram ID # and told me I could either have the funds deposited in my account, or get it by money gram at Kroger! Since when do grocery stores just have that kind of money just sitting there in the register to disperse?!

But I still listened, and was given 2 other numbers to call to "claim" my grant. When I called, she put me on hold and I could hear that it was a call center. When she got back on the line, she told me to go to CVS or Walgreens to get the moneygram! Since when do THOSE stores have moneygram? She then told me to go right away to call her when I got there for further instructions...and then told me there would be a $220 registration fee to receive the grant! At this point, I laughed and hung up. These people are the lowest form of pond scum...they prey on those who are already broke and desperate and urge you to go right away to get the money!

This is because they are trying to get you to give them your account number, or the cash while you'reswept up in the moment! If you take a minute to think about you realize it's a scam, and that's why they want you to rush right away to do it! They take advantage of poor, desperate people who will believe anything if it sounds like it will get them out of the hole they were in. And the biggest major tip off?? They asked me if I was married! Wouldn't the government know that? And government checks will always come in the mail, not deposited into your account, unless you are already set up with them for SSI. Beware of these predators and do not be taken in, no matter how good it sounds, because of its too good to be true...it probably is.
