Bill Zinke is in my opinion the WORST EMPLOYER EVER.

He is quite possibly the worst micromanager I have ever dealt with. As an 82 year old man you would think he knows better.  Think again! He hires people for what he says is a "THINKING" company but in my experience he does everything other than allow people to THINK! He hires assistants to type his scribly handwriting for him as emails (NOT in the job description I assure you). He forgets his own instructions and criticizes you if you happen to follow them. He then goes after ex-employees (he will fire you and then contest your unemployment claim) and tries to sue them or press charges against them for giving bonuses he forgets about! Should I mention he will practically harass you after you are done dealing with his BS until he feels he has had enough of you?

Speaking of criticism....he will call you fat, lazy, stupid, and ignorant, among many other things. Textbook emotional abuse! Simply put over the last 10 years he has had over 100 employees work for him. Its a 3 person office---do the math!

If you want an environment where you are not allowed to write your own emails without him writing it for you, place phone calls only when he writes a script for you to follow, and are pretty much his slave, enjoy working for Bill!  It won't last long I assure you.

Rebuttal Ex-Employee of William K. Zinke

AUTHOR: Judy Hartl - ()

To Whom It May Concern:

My name is Judy Hartl, and I worked with  Bill Zinke for about seven years when his management consulting firm was located in New York City.

Working with Bill was a challenge because his standards were high, partly because of his legal background but more because he was building a consulting practice that entailed working with senior executives in major companies who expected a high quality of work.  Along with myself, there were three additional support staff.  I can speak for all of them who felt as I did, and most of these girls were also with Bill for approximately the same length of time.

I thought I had excellent skills when Bill hired me, but learned a great deal from working with him and only left because I remarried.  I now live in Florida and still have fond memories of working with Bill.  If fact, we still exchange Christmas cards after 26 years, and he has visited my husband and me in Florida.

I am happy to put my name on this posting.

Bill Zinke Responds to Posts

AUTHOR: Bill Zinke - (United States of America)

To the Posters:

I have read all of the postings and believe some have validity. I am reminded of the Chinese riddle, which some of you have heard me quote:
QWhat is the biggest room in the world?
AThe room for improvement.
This applies to me, as it does to all of us.

There are parts of the postings that are absolutely untrue, for example that nobody stays beyond a short period and that I accept advice from nobody. The Office Manager is really an essential part of CPLs ongoing success. He has worked with me for more than 2 years, has received three substantial salary increases and three substantial bonuses because his work is consistently excellent. I frequently seek his advice and frequently accept his suggestions. He has traveled with me to four meetings (in one made the announcement that we would create a LinkedIn account for meeting participants at their request) and is a real colleague.

During the past four years, my long period of good health has caught up with me. They began with a severe case of shingles, followed by a fractured hip from which I am now almost fully recovered through the great support of a wonderful physical therapist, two angioplasties, and a hernia operation. What has sustained me is my motto Strength in Adversity, and that same motto also sustains me through the travails of Rip-off Reports, which clearly show room for improvement.

I suspect there is room for all of us to improve.

Bill Zinke

Note: One point I would like to make clear is that, despite the popular conception that people beyond 80 are over the hill and out of the game, I and the Center for Productive Longevity are going strong. I leave on March 16 for a busy week in Europe and may be making a trip to the Asia Pacific in April. CPL is making a difference in stimulating the substantially increased engagement of people 50 and older in productive activities, paid and volunteer, where they are qualified and ready to continue adding value. One important attribute, of course, is a positive attitude and an optimistic spirit.

Response to Bill Zinke

AUTHOR: MC - (United States of America)

I find it amazing that Bill Zinke doesn't actually dispute the comments made against him. Reality check, Bill: it's not libel if it's actually true.

Here are a few questions you should answer, Bill:

1. You have had over 100 employees in ten years for a small two-person office. Is it more likely that it is the 100+ employees who were at fault and are trying to victimize you, or that the employees themselves are victims of your inappropriate behavior and are warning others not to work for you?

2. You state that these senior people "expect high quality work". Is the high quality work because you have not revealed to these people that you have no understanding of how to use a computer and no understanding of how the world works in the 21st century, or is it because you still think the world is run like it is in the 1950s and refuse to accept the world has evolved from you?

3. Did you or did you not force an employee to carry a jar of your urine on numerous occasions?

4. Did you or did you not press charges against ex-employees because you forgot you offered them a bonus or raise and, instead of admitting you forgot, decided to pursue criminal action against them?

5. Do you ever state in your employment ads that the job is that of a typist, or do you misrepresent the position in your employment ads?

6. Do you or do you not dispute every unemployment claim that you have ever received?

7. Do you or do you not hire people explaining their responsibilities involve one skill set, make them solely typists, and then when they do not become the typists that you require, you terminate them and then use DRAFT documents as evidence of their "poor quality of work" when you dispute their unemployment claims?

Here is the latest employment ad of yours that you posted at Career Builder on 1/17/2013:

Let's pick this ad apart line by line.

Human Resource Services, Inc., a successful management consulting firm located in Boulder, CO, has sold its activities to focus on a non-profit that has the mission of enabling people 55 and older to remain productively engaged.  We have an immediate opening for an Executive Assistant/Project Coordinator.

You had been trying to sell HRS for years. The non-profit does not actually do anything to help older people. You write letters to get people to attend conferences so that they can do all the actual "engaging". You are a glorified events coordinator.

Responsibilities: This position reports to the president and provides support through a wide range of executive assistant duties applying administrative expertise towards complex assignments within defined parameters in a well-organized manner.

The "wide range of duties applying administrative expertise" is merely being able to type your hand written emails into Word or Outlook, being yelled at when someone cannot read your hand writing, being accused of not finding documents because your memory is going due to your age, and being called words like "stupid" for knowing how websites work (i.e. websites are not designed to be printed) or for "assuming" that computer monitors are in color.

Duties and responsibilities may be complex in nature where judgment and initiative are required in resolving problems and making recommendations (i e.: a sharp thinker).

The only recommendations you'll make are whether a comma or semi-colon should be used, determining the meaning of the use of transitional words like "of", and if an email should be "HIGH AND CONFIDENTIAL" (they usually all are).

Minimum of ten years of increasingly responsible experience in administrative roles with international experience
Why do you need international experience when Zinke makes prejudicial comments about anyone who isn't a white male (unless you deem them as "excellent" if you feel they've kissed your a*s)? Because you think international experience entails knowing how to type foreign addresses properly.

Advanced MS Office 2010 skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook)
Experience with MAC OS X and experience with Apple computers
Advanced computer proficiency and internet research skills
Typing speed of at least 70 WPM

The saddest part of this is you don't even know how to turn a computer on, Bill. You deem someone has experience if they know how to type an email with no typos, but then you get frustrated when you want to do things like send an email to God and the internet "listings" don't have God's direct telephone number.

Ability to work as a part of a team and support others as necessary
Ability to prioritize work, set deadlines independently and complete projects in a timely, efficient manner
Ability to remain flexible, to handle a variety of tasks with changing priorities

Working as part of a team is a joke. There is no freedom in that office. Employees merely do what they are told with zero latitude for outside the box thinking whatsoever.
Prioritizing work? Bill, you set priorities by marking emails "1+" "1++" and "1+++" like your employees are children. You then yell at people when they follow your instructions because you forgot what the instructions were.
Remain flexible? You mean the flexibility to be insulted on a daily basis, ridiculed, yelled at, demeaned, told not to take lunch and forced to work mandatory overtime and be harassed on the weekends, not to mention not be able to take any of the offered sick and vacation days, because you need someone who is going to type your handwritten notes all day. You never mention that in the employment ad or in any job interviews, likely because you know that no one would work for you if they knew the truth.

Excellent organizational and time management skills

The totality of the organization skills is making new folders for you every week because you have the organizational skills of an infant.

Strong work commitment/high standards

"Work commitment" means "don't think about taking a day off or leaving on time because you will be treated like garbage if you do not work mandatory unpaid overtime."

Ability to proofread and edit with high accuracy

Probably the only bit of truth in his ad. What the ad doesn't say is "proofread handwritten and messy cursive" and "edit from handwritten notes on type manuscripts that make it near impossible to transcribe."

Superior written and verbal communication skills

Communication skills = YES SIR and NO SIR.

Strong attention to detail
Ability to learn tasks independently and to apply previous experience to develop new techniques and systems
Cooperative, can-do attitude and professional demeanor.

Strong attention to detail doesn't matter when you're losing your eye-sight and can't even see where there's a period, Bill. And then you call your employees names as you try to correct them. To add insult to injury, when you discover you were wrong, you don't even apologize or admit you're wrong. You just add another insult and try to change the subject.

As far as cooperative can-do attitude? Every single person that has been in that office has tried to be cooperative with you, more than you deserve. You still emotionally (and from the files I've read and the Boulder PD crime report, in one case, physically) abuse your employees and create such a hostile work environment that their bodies are physically damaged after the treatment you give them.

Bill, the reality is that you are in your mid 80s and have kept yourself sheltered for so long that the world has changed since the mid 20th century. Employment laws are there to protect employees. As an employer, and one who claims to be in the HR field, you should have kept yourself abreast of what the laws are. Instead, you violate as many laws as possible, take advantage of the current economy by employing people with skill sets far beyond what you require and then placing them into an emotionally abusive situation, treat your staff like slaves by telling them to take 10 or 20 minute lunches, no breaks, and then forcing them to work overtime, and when they do not comply with your mandatory unpaid overtime, you fire them and then continue to harass them by making fraudulent cases during unemployment hearings. People quit when they feel they have the strength to walk out on you, and that should be commended, as you do your absolute best to break the spirit of everyone who unfortunately accepts a job offer from you.

The reality is yes, you are the worst employer, the worst boss, the worst example of a micromanager, and possibly the worst human being many people have encountered in their lives. Your legacy will be that of a terrible human being who did more harm than good during the course of his life.

Response from William K. Zinke

AUTHOR: Bill Zinke - (United States of America)

It is difficult to deal with outrageously false statements by former employees who failed to meet the required standards of a consulting firm which for the past 43 years has dealt with senior-level executives in major organizations who are entitled to expect high-quality work.  If these employees would identify themselves, I would immediately sue them for libel.

Another victim of Bill Zinke and Human Resource Services, Inc in Boulder, CO

AUTHOR: Charlotte - (United States of America)

Unfortunately, I too have been abused by William K. Zinke.

Emotionally, financially, professionally, he will hire people only to do everything in his power to ruin them.  The man takes a perverse pleasure in breaking down the people who work for him and he literally has no idea how to treat people who are not attorneys or multi-millionaire CEOs.  The man has not had a single employee leave on good terms, and I can confirm his extremely high turnover rate.  For someone whose profession is human resources, it reflects his failure as an efficient manager.  He has done things that are illegal but no one goes after him because they either don't have the money for it or don't want anything to do with him and just want to cut ties completely.

Rude and condescending is only the tip of the iceberg that describes Bill's personality.  Indeed, he will belittle you for something as simple as the type of paperclip you use on a document.  But when you point out his flaws and failures (when he misplaces paperwork, for example), he blames the employee for not babysitting him.

Also, beware of any "gift" the man gives you.  He will either put a stipulation on it (like paying a bonus, only to say you have to pay it back if you don't follow his ever-changing rules) or will conveniently forget giving you a bonus or any kind of gift, and then accuse you of stealing from him.  Instead of charging ex-employees with embezzlement, he should be charged for entrapment.

In short, Bill Zinke is an a**hole.  And I pray for anyone currently employed for him.

I have had similar experiences with Bill Zinke.  It was an absolute emotional rollercoaster working for him and Human Resource Services.  For someone with the experience he has, you would think he knew how to treat people better.  Instead, he only knows how to go for the jugular.
