Two years ago, I was contacted by a man from a company claiming to be in the business of helping people to become grant writers. After several days of phone calls, convincing and going against my gut feeling, I made the mistake of getting involved with a man named Robert McDonald at a company called IWorks.

He quoted me a price of around $9000 but was miraculously able to drop the price to $5089. Being a student and a public educator, I, of course, could not afford this venture; however, being a good writer, I believed that this program could help me not only pay off my student loans but also to write small business loans for some friends and other people to make some extra money. I was promised by Mr. McDonald over and over again that there were millions of dollars in personal needs grants available.

I went through my ridiculous "coaching" sessions, in which I was far more adept at writing than was my "coach." I did everything I was told to do and later contacted the company for my "additional sessions" to further help me recoup at LEAST the money I had "invested" (read: lost).

Being in public education, I have attempted to find grant money for my school on many, many occasions. I have researched on my own and have searched THOUSANDS of websites for education related grant money. In the process, I have also searched for "personal needs grants," and I have been told that they do not exist. Grantor after foundation after funding source state that "We do not grant money to individuals."

I have used the software and researched ALL of the funding sources suggested by my "coach." I have also researched thousands more funding sources NOT suggested by my coach. What I have encountered is a series of dead ends.

I called yesterday to get website information from "customer service" so that I could file a complaint, and I was given the runaround including "someone will call you back immediately" and "why do you need a website?" I then called one of the 25 phone numbers that I had been given by Mr. McDonald (who, by the way, claimed to be a devout Christian), and finally reached a man who was unbelievably rude to me.

He stated that what I had paid for was an "educational program" and that, although I could have found all of the information I had learned from my "coach" online, I had chosen to pay for it. He insinuated that I am too stupid to find funding because my "coach" had written many grants for which he received money and I had not.

I have a Bachelor's degree, a Master's degree with a double certification, and I will finish my Doctorate in the summer. I also completed a Medical Transcription program while working on my Doctorate. Those programs were ALL educational programs. I have been able to find work based on the training I received from EACH degree that I have earned, which, by the way, have been earned at considerable cost to me in terms of money, time, and social life.

This "educational program," which cost me over $5000, has earned me nothing in return. I would never have agreed to the terms of the contract except for Robert McDonald's repeated guarantees of personal needs grant money that was available from multiple sources. Now, in addition to being out $5089, I am absolutely humiliated that I fell for such a scam. I consider myself to be reasonably intelligent, and no matter what, I have made a complete fool of myself and have lost a significant amount of self respect.

I don't expect anything to be done about my situation; however, I have considerable documentation that I feel will make a good case. I am interested in finding out if anyone else has successfully prosecuted, filed a civil suit or class action suit, or if anyone would be interested in doing so.

The statements made by "Ryan R" are a blatant lie. He NEVER contacted me. I was contacted by someone named Tony who informed me that Mr. Riddle would NOT be contacting me under any circumstances. If "Mr. Riddle" were at all concerned with "good customer service," he, himself, would contact me and make a reasonable offer instead of having Tony contact me to insult my intelligence. This company is completely fraudulent. I have contacted an attorney who is looking through all of the information sent to me including my contract. I'm certain that they have covered all of their bases in their contracts; however, I'm also certain that the "customer service" and "products" offered by this company are a COMPLETE sham. I will be happy to deal directly with "Ryan R" should he make ANY attempt to contact me. I will not, however, deal with Tony who was insulting and condescending.

Wendy purchased an educational program to learn how find and apply for grant. The program was sold as a non- refundable program and this was understood and agreed to at the time of purchase. Wendy received everything that was purchased plus additional services that were provided to her at no additional charge. In an attempt to provide good customer service and resolve her concerns. I have contacted Wendy and tried to negotiate a settlement regarding her account. Wendy declined all attempts to negotiate a settlement. At that time she stated she would take her chances on going through an attorney. And I informed her to have her attorney contact me so that we may resolve this matter as quickly as possible. I have yet to hear from her attorney. If Wendy would like to continue the settlement negotiations she can contact me at 877-235-7005 as we are still willing to come to a reasonable settlement regarding her account.

In my previous statement, I explained that I had spoken with someone in customer service, who was extremely rude to me. His name is Tony, and he called me today after hearing from the BBB and informed me that I would only be able to deal with him and that the general manager would not, in fact, be contacting me. He also informed me that I was in default on my financing agreement according to the finance company, which turned to be a mistake on THEIR part, and not mine. I was told that I would need to have my attorney contact him in order to move forward on this in any way.

Aside from all of the humiliation for having fallen for the scam in the first place, I was subjected to Tony's claim that I was in default on my payments FOR the scam. I had to follow a paper trail to a credit card that I paid off over a year ago to find proof that I am not in default on my payments, and it's going to take at least another month to resolve this issue.

Nothing is ever going to be resolved for me because I feel certain that, although the attorneys I have spoken with feel that I have a good case, and although the reputation of the iWorks is questionable at best, iWorks is a large, powerful company that is going to do everything in its power to keep the money that I stupidly, naively handed over.

The service was absolutely not worth $5, let alone $5000, but because I am trusting of other people, I gave Robert McDonald the benefit of the doubt that he was an honest man. Now, I am out over $5000, saddled with debt because of my ridiculous educational costs, and feeling like an idiot for ever believing this company's claims. I got involved in this mess to find grant money to pay off 13 years of higher education, and all I have done is add another year's tuition to what I will be paying for the next 50 years.

I will continue to pursue this as much as I can, but I have little hope. At this point, the best I can do is to urge others not to fall for this scam. The best I can do is to help other people not to be blinded by smooth talking business people who have absolutely no scruples. They are no better than televangelists who steal money from the elderly in the name of God. Please, PLEASE do not make the same mistake that I made. I will continue to look for platforms to get this message to others.

I am still interested in hearing from others who have also been scammed in an effort to work together to fight iWorks. I am also interested in hearing the stories of other people so that we can get the message out there to other potential victims of this fraudulent company.
