The OP only has her self to blame. No rip off here.

First, she was going to drive her car illegally, so the tow company did her a favor!

Second, MOST apartment leases have a clause in them that prohibits unregistered vehicles.
Also, disabled and/or dismantled cars are usually prohibited and many even prohibit you from doing any work whatsoever on your car on the premises.

My suggestion? Don't like the apartment rules?
Buy a house!
Or, at least keep your car properly registered, and parked legally.

And, in many states tow companies do "cruise" certain parking lots looking for violators as per written agreements with property owners and managers. Common practice.

I worked for a tow company here in Bradenton and we cruised the parking lot of several businesses looking for parking violators. As long as posting requirements are met either by sign, or tenant lease, etc, it's perfectly legal.

A few years back I needed some office equipment delivered to my complex.  The hindi owner was very stingy and didnt want to give me a discount on my purchase.  I arranged for delivery but "forgot" to tell him about my apartments predatory towing policy.  When he got done unloading my stuff out of his personal rav4, I offered him some tea as it was a hot day and thought it was the least I could do.

He choked pretty bad when he saw the tow truck taking his baby away!  I told him I hope they give you a discount!

And yes tow truck drivers shouldnt be enforcing the law.  Especially a stupid law.  I cant wait for the stories to break of tow truck drivers peeling off registration stickers Roscoe Dukes of Hazard style. What do you think Steve?

Here in Buffalo, there is a city ordinance that forbids parking of unregistered vehicles on public streets or on private property in PUBLIC VIEW-landlords can be FINED if a tenant has an unregistered vehicle parked out in the open in an apartment parking lot.

I own many rental units and I don't hesitate to have an unregistered vehicle towed at the owner's expense-I'm not getting fined because some tenant ( or tenant's guest) doesn't keep his/her registeration up to date.

This towing policy is clearly explained in my written leases.

Also, you should know that a tow company cannot simply "cruise" an apartment complex looking for vehicles to tow.  The tow company HAS A CONTRACT with the apartment owner/owner's agent which gives them the authority to come on to private property and tow vehicles.

For my properties, the tow company MUST BE CALLED by me or my wife.

Hey towtard it is the job of the POLICE  ti enforce registrations not predatory towing companies. It sounds likme this towing is a typical predatory towing operation! The state needs to reign in these predators! Most predatory companies are operated by biker scum and meth heads!  Put them out of business as soon as possible! bikers are PUNKS  and SCUM!!

Was your registration expired?  If so, you have no defense to having your car towed.  Lack of notice or not.

You poor thing!  It is common almost everywhere in big cities for this.  Houston is thee worst!  In Houston, if your car stalls on a freeway, the city has authorized the tow companies to remove your car, and you pay whatever they want to charge!  Apartments and shopping centers are risking places to park in Houston, too.  If you don't have an apartment sticker on your windsheild (or they don't see it or you just bought the car, etc.) it is gone!  Happened to me, too.  Just bought it that night and took it home, parked right in front of my apartment by the pool.  Next morning, I heard a tow truck outside and watched my vehicle being pulled.  I ran outside in my boxer shorts, jumped into my other car and headed them off at the gate...I explained that I just bought it late last night and didn't have time to get a sticker.  I showed him my ID and only then did he acknowledge that he had to drop it.  But he asked for some cash...I told him I would give him a check...he said forget it and put it back.  I would have had to pay $200 at a tow yard if I didn't catch him before he left the property.
