I am writing to you about the corrupt parking system provided in your city by Imperial Parking Canada Corporation.

On July 15th 2006, I parked at the 56 Queen Street East Toronto lot managed by Impark. I purchased a day pass, which I understood to be valid until 7:00pm. This week I received a final notice before collections for the absurd amount of $68.90 for a ticket that was issued at 6:52. There was no ticket left on my vehicle.

Considering I parked there 2 months ago, I thought it was entirely possible that I misunderstood or recalled incorrectly that the pass was good until 7. I called Impark's Toronto information line today (416-369-1801), and I was informed that day passes at this lot are valid until 8!

I called their 877 Vancouver number to protest this fine. I was given the complete run around and every excuse in the book. For some reason I was told my pass was only good until 6:00 and I could've purchased an extra hour, that I was never offered or thought I needed because the sign clearly said 7. Again this is completely different answer than I got when I called their Toronto line and was told passes are good until 8. No where on the pass does it say what time it expires.

There might be some legal loophole or small print somewhere which makes them able to lie to me about the time, then rip me off for an absurd fine.

Do I still have the day pass

AUTHOR: Ross - (Canada)

POSTED: Wednesday, September 13, 2006

Thanks for your response. The funny thing is I still do have the day pass. It was just plain luck that I found it under the seat in my car. The "ticket" was from July 15, I did not get this notice until Septermber 11th. Who really keeps reciepts for parking that long? The company knows darn well 99% of people won't have the pass after that length of time, all part of their scam.

Also there is no time or any information stamped on the day pass. Therefor a ticket issued at 6:45, they can simply say the time cutoff was 6:00 as they did with me (a lie). I called back a second time to the 877 number, and this time I asked them what time day passes end BEFORE I gave them the information of what time I was charged. They were not able to lie that way and they ended up canceling the ticket.

The point is this company is out there to rip people off any way they can. That is a bunch of crap. If they want to make more money, raise the rates! Don't try to scam people.

I will be starting a website shortly on this company imperialparkingcanada.com. so that people may be informed on how this company is trying to exploit them.

Imperial Parking Canada vs. The City of Toronto makes for a good read. The city tried to pass a by-law where parking lots would have to issue parking tickets the same way the city does. Post a ticket on your car, with an option II which alows for a trial. Sounds fair to me... But Imperial Parking spent a great deal of time and money to fight this in court, and in the end won...

Do you still have the Day Pass?

A long-shot, I know, but if you still have the receipt, photocopy both sides and send that to them.

I've had two ticket "issues" with Impark. Both times they were reasonable once I showed that I had either paid -- I sent them the receipt as payment for the ticket -- or intended to pay but their machine undercharged my Visa card.

Corrupt? I expect so. They likely make a lot of money issuing extraneous parking tickets and hoping people are too lazy / frightened to dispute them.
