I can only guess the complaints here and on Rip Off are only the tip of the ice berg of the actual number of people who've had their money taken and their credit screwed by this company. The problem is the consumer is not given the opportunity to investigate the company prior to being sucked in by highly polished "make your decision now now now and sign the dotted line before you leave the room" sales people. If we knew who all the people were who've been taken by StoresOnline over the past several years we could consider a class action lawsuit to recover losses, expose them for what they are and shut them down.

See the info provided below by the Federal Trade Commission, I believe StoresOnline failed to provide many requirements that may make their binding contracts void and null. File your complaints!!!

The FTC offers this advice to consumers considering an Internet-related business opportunity:

Consider the promotion carefully. If it claims buyers can earn a certain income, then it also must give the number and percentage of previous purchasers who achieved the earnings. If an earnings claim is there - but the additional information isn't - the business opportunity seller is probably violating the law.

Get earnings claims in writing. If the business opportunity costs $500 or more, then the promoter must back up the earnings claim in a written document. It should include the earnings claim, as well as the number and percentage of recent clients who have earned at least as much as the promoter suggested. If it's a work-at-home or other business opportunity that involves an investment of under $500, ask the promoter to put the earnings information in writing.

Study the business opportunity's franchise disclosure document. Under the FTC Franchise Rule, many business opportunity promoters are required to provide this document to potential purchasers. It includes information about the company, including whether it has faced any lawsuits from purchasers or lawsuits alleging fraud. Look for a statement about previous purchasers. If the document says there have been no previous purchases but the seller offers you a list of references, be careful: the references probably are phonies.

Interview each previous purchaser in person, preferably where their business operates. The FTC requires most business opportunity promoters to give potential purchasers the names, addresses and phone numbers of at least 10 previous purchasers who live the closest to the potential purchaser. Interviewing them helps reduce the risk of being misled by phony references.

Contact the attorney general's office, state or county consumer protection agency and Better Business Bureau both where the business opportunity promoter is based and where you live to find out whether there is any record of unresolved complaints. While a complaint record may indicate questionable business practices, a lack of complaints doesn't necessarily mean that the promoter and the business opportunity don't have problems. Unscrupulous dealers often change names and locations to hide a history of complaints.

If the business opportunity involves selling products from well-known companies, call the legal department of the company whose merchandise would be promoted. Find out whether the business opportunity and its promoter are affiliated with the company. Ask whether the company has ever threatened trademark action against the business opportunity promoter.

Consult an attorney, accountant or other business advisor before you put any money down or sign any papers. Entering into a business opportunity can be costly, so it's best to have an expert check out the contract first. If the promoter requires a deposit, ask your attorney to establish an escrow account where the deposit can be maintained by a third party until you make the deal.

Take your time. Promoters of fraudulent business opportunities are likely to use high-pressure sales tactics to get you to buy in. If the business opportunity is legitimate, it'll still be around when you're ready to decide.

Reporting Possible Fraud

If you suspect a business opportunity promotion is fraudulent, report it to:

the state attorney general's office in the state where you live and in the state where the business opportunity promoter is based.

your county or state consumer protection agency. Check the blue pages of the phone book under county and state government.

the Better Business Bureau in your area and the area where the promoter is based.

the FTC. File a complaint online at www.ftc.gov or call toll free 1-877-FTC-HELP (1-877-382-4357).
The FTC works for the consumer to prevent fraudulent, deceptive and unfair business practices in the marketplace and to provide information to help consumers spot, stop and avoid them. To file a complaint or to get free information on consumer issues, visit www.ftc.gov or call toll-free, 1-877-FTC-HELP (1-877-382-4357); TTY: 1-866-653-4261. The FTC enters Internet, telemarketing, identity theft and other fraud-related complaints into Consumer Sentinel, a secure, online database available to hundreds of civil and criminal law enforcement agencies in the U.S. and abroad.

Better be a network engineer and programmer

AUTHOR: Denise - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, August 19, 2003

Storesonline does not fulfill it's promise. It has a great ecommerce development environment. However, I could never download the basic tutorial until I accidentily got in contact with fOlks from the second leg of their business model. That's right business model. THEY'RE THE FOLKS WHO CONTACT YPOU ABOUT A MONTH AFTER YOUR PURCHASE OFFERING SPECIALIZED GUIDANCE FOR ABOUT $1000 MORE. THEY KNOW THE AVERAGE PERSON IS PROBABLY A BIT OVERWHELMEDAT THIS POINT. These folks graciously emailed the material (A year after I strarted my website)as the chat folks consistenly refused to do( said the files were too large). I can download word and adobe on all of my other 4 computers.

They suck you in with promises of assisted marketing "training" and instant chat. Without the documents you don't know how to set up your target markets, and many other pertinent features.

I could never get an answer for the chat except for one occasion I was so pissed because my 650 product records dissappeared. I pulled out the read deal. I said "look, I was a programmer for 5 years, I've been an network administrator for 7 years, and guess what else, MY UNCLE IS A FEDERAL JUDGE! GET MY PRODUCTS BACK". Instantly, the answer appeared. "Click this switch" was the reply. Wow! There were my records again.

They also promised programmer support. I submitted a request and got an acknowlegement of submission 2 weeks later. Oh, well, I've learned quite a bit of JAVA script since then.

I've also learned a lot about the many players to bring this business together. I'm not profitable yet. It's been a year and I've only set one website up. I broke the cardinal rule of keeping the product focus small for a website. Home decor, it's cost me lot's of programming time and I also set the website up for face to face selling and flexible product pricing.

I have'nt submerged myself into the Marketing area they promissed to guide me through. However, I have researched it, it's scary, but I'm willing to put in the work.

Storesonline doesn't fulfill it's promise in spirit, but I would say it does by the letter if I were able to download the guides. AND THAT THIER "TRICK".

the Securities Division issued Summary Order to Cease and Desist against Respondents, Imergent Inc., StoresOnline, Inc., John J. Poelman, Donald Danks

AUTHOR: Terry - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Wednesday, June 18, 2003

StoresOnline doesn't sell ISP services, they sell internet merchant services, or bullsh#t. The problem is not in the merchandise offered - that's never the complaint - it's StoresOnline's services that are faulty. They are actually in the seminar business. If they ran their company in the same professional manner with the same enthusiasm as they conduct their sales seminars, they wouldn't have unhappy customers or websites on the internet warning people not to do business with them -

#1 UPDATE EX-employee responds

Small problem with above post

AUTHOR: David - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, June 17, 2003

What you posted would be great if Storesonline was setup as a business opportunity provider, but they aren't. Their business license sets them up as an "internet service provider", which means they don't technically provide anything for you to sell, only the means for which you sell your product. In other words, they are like a property owner from whence you lease your sale space...so they are exempt from business opportunity laws and practices.

I used to be a programmer for this company, and I felt bad ever day that I could not help merchants by providing or even suggesting proven profitable products and services for them to market/resell on their sites. It is possible to make money on the internet, but what Storesonline fails to tell their potential customers is that it is hard work, requires a lot of effort, and is best done by keeping expenses low until you have the income to justify higher expenses. By doing a bit more research and not falling prey to sales pitches and learning how to use easy-to-use web-based programming tools, an entrepeneur can build their own store online for as little as $60/yr. Even with 10 hours of help from a professional, it can cost less than $400.
