When we first bought the van in May 2011, we had problems from the start. They had it for almost a month 'fixing" issues which we supposedly already replaced. They did give us a rental from their lot. I've had a few problems with the van, an 04 Kia Sedona. They always tell me they're too busy and want to refer me to somewhere else. I think that's bull. You sold me this hunk of metal, so I feel you should fix it.

Okay so 2 weeks ago, we noticed an oil leak. I called Jefferson Auto and was told by the manager Jonathan to take it to another garage that he refers customers to. I took it to this other place 2 weeks ago. We do have another vehicle that needs to be inspected and has some problems of it's own. So it takes 2 weeks to fix because of part ordering issues. I don't blame anyone for that. We didn't qualify for a rental through the warranty company so I called Jonathan too see about getting a car from them and of course they don't do that anymore and it's not their problem cause they're not doing the work.

On Wednesday, the other garage calls and says it's done and while on the way to pick it up they call back and say it was running on the rack and it died. The tried putting gas in it and it won't do anything. They think it's the fuel pump. So that's a covered repair but again doesn't qualify for rental reimbursement. Yesterday they call again and say it was a relay that was loose so he put a new one on and it was fine. I picked it up today and didn't even get out of Washington before it shut off on me and wouldn't start.

I immediately called Jefferson Auto and of course I'm told that I need to call the other repair shop cause they did the work. I only called because YOU told me to! So I sit on the side of the road for 4 hours. The guy from other repair shop comes out 2 seperate times to try to see what's going on. I had to have my mom use her AAA so we could get it towed. I called Jefferson again to let them I know I was bringing it back to THEM and they told me to take it back to original shop because they already looked at it. All the while, I am still without a 2nd vehicle so I can't get my first one fixed and inspected and I am paying $319 a month for this van. I feel that Jefferson needs to supply me with a vehicle to use. That's all I'm really asking for.

I think I see the problem.

The key is in this statement from the OP's original report.

" We didn't qualify for a rental through the warranty company so I called Jonathan too see about getting a car from them  "

I would wager that the OP is dealing with a 3rd party warranty company, not a direct warranty from the car dealer as later stated.    If that's the case, his beef is with the warranty company an not the dealer that originally sold him the car.

A lot of folks buy a 3rd party warranty in lieu of actually having a used car checked out before purchasing.   This poster is finding out the false economy of such a decision.

Sounds like he is not standing behind his warranty

If you can, have him remove the cost of the warranty. If he is going to not honor it, then he just charged you extra for not honoring his warranty. After all, if you have to pay someone else to get your repairs done then there is no warranty. Have your written warranty with you in case he denies he ever gave you one (he sounds like the type). Good luck.

Warranty

AUTHOR: Richmond29 - (United States of America)

POSTED: Tuesday, April 24, 2012

We do have a warranty through the dealership. When we first bought the van after a week it had problems and we played circle jerk for a month until it got fixed. We never had any other problems until this last time. I called Jefferson because we had an issue with the van not starting, some kind of gear shift issue. They wanted to send me to another garage because they were too busy. Well we broke down one day and we called AAA and the guy somehow got it started but said it was probably a starter. We drove it to the dealership and left it there overnight and called in the morning. Then maybe 2 weeks went by and we noticed an oil leak so again I called and again I was referred to this other garage and that's where the nightmare began. I don't think it's fair for them to wash their hands of it because they referred us to someone else. Also I asked for the carfax report on the van from the dealership and I was told that they get them on every vehicle but of course they can't find the one on my van. I did go to the website and without paying the $35 I was able to see that there are 29 reports on that van. I believe they knew they were selling me a piece of crap van. I do plan on getting this report to see whats all on it.

You seem to be confused about vehicle maintenance...

Just to start off right: I do not work for any sort of mechanic or dealership at all. I am just a regular consumer like you that has purchased and maintained vehicles for over 35 years.

When you purchase a vehicle, unless you purchase it with a warranty, the transaction with the dealership is finished. They don't owe you anything beyond the actual purchase transaction.

The good news is this: you can take your vehicle to any reliable mechanic and get it fixed at your expense.

If you choose to bring it to the original dealership that sold you the vehicle, you are entering into another transaction for which you have to pay. If you have a warranty, then you naturally want to follow the warranty process.

If you bought this vehicle from one of the small lots (BHPH) then you are better off NOT bringing the vehicle back to them for repairs. They most likely will "band aid" your vehicle repair and charge you an enormous price to do so! In other words, you are setting yourself up for future headaches. If you go to a reliable mechanic, you will 1) actually get a decent repair and 2) the repair will be completed in a reasonable time. And if you regularly maintain your vehicle, you won't have very many repairs.

As to loaner vehicles, most of the time you get a loaner vehicle with larger dealerships on newer cars under warranty. If you have an older, used vehicle you don't get the loaner. I rent a vehicle, at my expense, if its going to be in the shop for an extended period.  Fortunately when you bring it to a reliable mechanic, you rarely have to rent a vehicle as they get their repair work done quickly.

In short, the purchase of a vehicle is a separate transaction from the maintenance and repair of the vehicle. And, a warranty is only as good as the company behind the warranty (and the written contract).  If you learn this now, then you will save yourself a lot of time, frustration and money in the future.
