I purchased a used car. Before buying it I had a pre-purchase inspection done and no engine issues were found. The next morning I took to Jiffy Lube for an oil change. The technician forgot to replace the oil cap after completing the oil change. I drove about 30 miles on the highway when my car died.

I towed the car to a mechanic who said the engine had failed because the oil had splattered all over the engine because the oil cap was missing. I towed the car to the seller's location and filed a claim with Jiffy Lube. I was assured that it would be handled in a professional manner and that Jiffy Lube would take the car to their mechanic to be diagnosed.

Jiffy Lube had a mechanic look at the car and said they could not determine the cause of the engine failure. They instructed the seller to break down the engine so they might be able to diagnose the problem. The seller, who was acting in a professional manner, complied.

Jiffy Lube came back and said they still could not determine the cause and instructed the seller to disassemble the engine further. The seller, who was acting in a professional manner, complied. Jiffy Lube came back and said they still couldn't determine the cause and requested further disassembly. The seller, who was acting in a professional manner, complied.

Jiffy Lube came back and said they still couldn't determine the cause and requested further disassembly. The seller finally protested to me that he couldn't continue to have his mechanic do work for Jiffy Lube when his mechanic and and independent mechanic both concluded that the cause of the engine failure was due to Jiffy Lube's error.

My father told Jiffy Lube they could take the car and do whatever additional research was needed. Jiffy Lube refused to do any additional research and diagnosis and denied our claim. They said we would have to sue them for restitution and that they would fight us in court. Jiffy Lube clearly will not take responsibility for the negligence of their employee.

Of course you disagree with me, we haven't agreed on anything yet.

But we are not talking about your racing motors and your even silly to put them in to this. It would be obvious to even a moron when your talking about high performance, when things go bad they go bad fast.

Now let's get back to the every day clunker. Even if someone is that dense not to see the idot lights, which I couldn't begin to imagine that happening, now rember this part, they are going to come back to you and tell you that you blew up there engine because you left the cap off. It had nothing to do with the fact that they possibly drove with no oil in it and the car was trying to tell them that, you did it, now replace the motor, and don't forget you can't over charge them on this one, it is a freeby, because you left the cap off.

I may not build racing motors but I am honest enough to tell who is wrong, why don't you try that sometime. Until the next time.

I have seen the air currents under the hood Vacuum engine oil out of an open cap at an insane rate. In my case 5 quarts in about 12 minutes. Expensive for a guy like me when there is $15 quart / liter synthetic racing oil in there.

Engines loosing oil like this have been known to maintain enough pressure to prevent triggering a low oil pressure light but suffer from oil starvation to critical components causing serious failures. ( Igot luck and was flagged off before this happened to me.)

And even if it did I have personally seen an engine damaged beyond repair in less than 15 seconds after the light came on. And that was on an engine with a 40 second shut down delay for safety. (BUS ENGINE)

Most people aren't that 'Swift' in understanding that flashing check engine means ''shut it off now''. In fact I think its foolish for the auto manufacturers to not have auto shut down for this fault.

So the idea that the check engine light will prevent engine damage with an oil loss is preposterous.

Next as to the tear down requests. Usually it starts with a Valve Cover, then either the intake,  front cover or the oil pan. Usually the Insurance company requests the oil pan last. When these things happen you are usually dealing with an "Insurance" system even if it is the Jiffy Lube corporate system.

When we get into one of these part by part tear downs it means that the company asking for the tear down is looking for a reason not to pay. You can see the train coming in this case but unless you ""PLAY ALONG"" they will 100% of the time refuse the repair. Sometimes they can't find a way out and actually pay.

There are a couple of small problems with this.

You wouldn't blow enough oil out of the filler cap hole in that short of time unless you had another problem like a blown head gasket or something.

Then you have what is called an idiot or warning light that will come on when the oil is low, that is so you don't mess your motor up, but the car will still run. It will also come on when you lose oil pressure and so will the check engine light. So you should have had ample warning before the motor actually quits.

I'm just a do it yourselfer and I do all of my own work, but I wouldn't call myself a mechanic, so you can take this for what you think it is worth. But I hate crooks, which is the cause of me doing my own work.

In all honesty just getting your oil changed didn't cause this problem.

Also a pre-purchase inspection of the car does not really matter, no one can see inside a motor. There are test such as a compression test that will give a mech an idea if the motor is wore out, which I doubt anyone done, if it sounds good it is good to go.

Also you mention that they took the engine apart, more than once, there is only so much to getting an engine apart and finding the problem, it is not rocket science, they make it sound like it is to get the big bucks. But I still have to wonder why they didn't find a problem, something is not right there.

You had to ignore the warnings and the problem was bought with the car.

Did you bother to check the oil when the car quit?

What kind of car is it and how many miles.

Did Jiff Lube suggest any kind of service with that oil change that you refused?
