Yes, John Robert Powers is shady. I use to work for them under Stacey Cummings and Michael Palance at the Charlotte location. I was considered a "talent scout" basically, I would work a table at the mall for so many hours and recruit as many people as possible to come in for "auditions", basically the potential candidate was audition for the school which is tuition based which can range anywhere to 2,000 to 10,000 dollars, depending on how much YOU could afford.
Then, during our "office days" we would call for about 6 hours (with only a 30 min break) the leads that we generated through the mall and explain the audition process to the interestee.
For the most part, they get away with what is called a "Bait and Switch" and are not registered with the BBB. They say "do you want to star with Hannah Montana or The Suite Life of Zack and Cody?" Giving high hopes to parents and children that they are coming into an audition for a particular agent when honestly, it's for the school and THEN once you pay your tuition is when you can start seeing results.
Just be very careful when investing this large sum. If you should, please make sure of the following:
-- you've read your terms and agreement CAREFULLY (they are tricky and filled with loopholes)
--that you (or your child) is most determined to make it in this business. This school will help if you are active in outside photo shoots, auditions, etc... You can actually apply to modeling agenceis if you have a proper portfolio.
--Willing to invest in more money outside of JRP for modeling, etc...
Nonetheless, make this school your LAST RESORT!!
