I thought I could spot these online scams pretty well, but people are getting clever and taking advatange of folks seeking employment. Check out this latest one: I applied for an admin job in a dentist office to a blind ad. I got a response that the position had been filled but there is an admin position opened up that: pays $19 per hour, starts in two weeks, and would I still be interested? Then the follow up e-mail letting me know that they would e-mail me times available for an interview and by the way here's a link to a whitening kit we offer our clients for only $1.

Well using my critical thinking skills the following red flags popped up:

1. On the website of the office (in the email signature) there was no physical address 2. In his emails he ne never addressed my name.    3. $19 per hour plus "dental benefits from day one" sound too good to be true.          4. A link to a product sounds fishy.

So I did a search about the company on RipOffReport.com and google. I found that google search provided someone else claiming they were contacted by the same company and the e-mai she copied and pasted were the exact same e-mails I received.

There is no job. The scam is for the people that click on the link given in the email about the teeth whitening and they get your credit card information.

First Email from dcowan@jonasdentaloffice.com

Good afternoon,

Thank you for replying to our ad for the administrative position. I've reviewed your application and wanted to let you know that the original position was offered to someone else. The good news, however, is that I may have another position opening up that would need to be filled in about two weeks. It's not definite, but I should know more in the next day or two.

To tell you a little bit about us: we're a local dental practice devoted to offering our patients the highest standard of preventative, restorative, and aesthetic care. We are always at the forefront of the latest research in dentistry and use the most up-to-date methods and technology.

The position is administrative in nature and also involves a fair degree of patient interaction. The compensation is $19 per hour with benefits included after 8 weeks. If you're interested, please get back to me as soon as possible so I know whether or not to keep you updated.

 Second Email:

Hello again,

Just wanted to give you a quick update. The position is indeed going to be available and we're anticipating the start date to be March 1st, just under 2 weeks from now. I'm going to be putting together a schedule with some available times to come in and meet with us, which I'll email you when I finish. Just select the day and time that works for you, and I'll send you a confirmation along with directions to the office.

In terms of benefits, you should know that we actually try to practice what we preach: all of our employees are treated to complementary dental services from the very first day. On that note, I have included a link for a trial of a teeth whitening kit that we've been giving as a gift to our patients this month. We've been getting great feedback on this whitener, so I thought you might like to try it too. Make sure to enter "jonasdental" in the promo box, that gets shipping down to $1 for our clients. http://www.jonasdentaloffice.com/celebwhite217

I'll contact you again in the next couple days with my availability for next week.

Best regards,

Daniel Cowan Office Manager
