Here's what may have happened.

AUTHOR: Nikki - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Monday, July 14, 2008

You said you paid off your card in 2007. Did you make sure the next statement showed a zero balance? This is how all credit card companies work these days.

Say you get a bill dated April 1 for $500, due on April 20th. Say you pay the $500 on April 15, thinking you paid the bill in full. Whoops, you forgot to add interest from the 1st through the 15th. Your $500 balance was the balance as of the statement date of April 1, not your balance as of April 15. So, on the May 1 statement, you may have owed $10 interest. When you didn't pay that, you got hit with the late fee, and every month thereafter.

Many people who think they pay off their credit cards don't bother to open the next bill, figuring it's just going to be zero.
