I was a customer of Just Energy. I was two years into my contract and another company (Sunwave Gas and Power) came to my door and offered me what I considered a great product. I signed with them. I later got a visit at my door from Just Energy telling me they would lower my price and to call Sunwave and tell Sunwave the guy who sold me my contract lied at the door so they would let me out of my current contract so I could stay with Just. I told them no thanks. They came again. Same sales person and tried to tell me the Sunwave guy lied and I had to cancel and stay with Just. So I called Sunwave and asked what was going on because I felt harassed by Just. Sunwave said they were not surprised. They had several calls like this with people telling them their sales person lied but after they cancelled the contract calmly then wanted to address the issue with THIER Sales staff it came out that these customers were being coached by Just to say that so they would get the new lower rate from Just.
When I spoke to Laura at Sunwave, she suggest a few things. First do some research on the rate I was currently paying versus the RPP rate. She gave me 5 different websites to look at and suggested how to calculate my bill if I was on RPP (time of use) versus my current Just Energy rate I had been paying for 2 years, plus what I would pay with Sunwave. She said she would cancel my contract until I was educated enough to know what I wanted and she told me to look carefully at the new lower rate being offered by Just incase it was a one year only offer with a significant increase in the second to fifth year. She was right. I read the terms and conditions and then asked myself-who lied to me? Just Energy did. When I called Just to say no I wanted to get out of my current contract and did not want their contract they sent me a letter telling me I needed to pay them $400 to get out of my existing contract and they were sending it directly to collections.
So a few things I learned from my Research that the government and the Ontario Energy Board should investigate. First..They don't do enough against companies like Just Energy. Second, they can't do enough against companies like Just Energy because they opened up the commodity business years ago in the interests of"the consumer" then make it so hard for the consumer to get a contract with a good company because they 1) WARN you against these companies, 2) almost promote the RPP price, 3) make you go though a ridiculous reaffirmation call, 4) bury the global adjustment charges in the current RPP price but send out price comparisons to customers that will now be a line item on their bill and use a small amount of kWh to compare it with. I could go on and on. When I called Sunwave back to get more information because they seemed to be the only company that was upfront and honest with me (and she gave me her personal number), she laughed and had to agree but said all she could do was educate me so I would make an informed choice. Even my utility tried to talk me out of my "choice" and stay on their rate.
So bottom line here. I don't appreciate what Just Energy told me to do (lie to get out of a contract with a competitor) and I don't appreciate the Ontario Energy Board and the government make decision to "deregualte" and industry and then can't do anything about the bad companies because they let them get too big and bad and if they take away their licence they are really saying we made a huge mistake by deregulating and you have to put up with companies like Just Energy. I know Sunwave is new but I am glad they are at least innovative and honest.
