So, we thought that we would get a fair shake by Kampgrounds of America (KOA), and for the most part, we have enjoyed what KOA purports to be – A family fun campground. And yet, there is an undercurrent that KOA may be unwilling to deal with.

KOA is presented as the place that families can go and have a great time, a safe environment, and a place that is easily accessible anywhere one may be on the geographic United States of America.

I’m talking about discrimination against those who appear to be, or are actually less fortunate.

We lost everything financially in 2005, when the fraud of a Bank of America foreclosure forced us out of a home that we had 4/5 paid off.

We recoiled from the system. The system that was supposed to be in place to protect those who were “subject to the jurisdiction thereof” (14th Amendment) not only failed miserably, but endorsed criminal acts.

I’m not writing this article to protest or even revisit those things. I only present them to tell you why we feel so untrusting to the system of fairness that is alleged to exist in America.

And that brings us to the KOA… An organization that is nationwide, should have a grievance procedure in place, or a set of standards in place that would help someone who is being discriminated against to receive some form of advocacy or remedy.

Yet, when I approached KOA about the first time it happened, “Tami” in Kamper Services said this:

“We at the KOA Home Office work closely with the management of each individually owned and operated KOA Campground. Policies vary widely throughout the KOA system and are individually set by each KOA.  We will pass along your feedback to the Medford/Gold Hill KOA to review.”

According to this, KOA has an explicit “hands off” policy when complaints are addressed. KOA doesn’t appear to have any protection in place for Kampers who have grievances with KOA Kampgrounds.

This is the THIRD time that this has happened at a KOA. First, in Medford, OR, with Ken and Kathy Ferris, the owners there. We hadn’t missed a payment, or caused any problems, or had anyone give us any concerns. One day it was just, “You can’t stay any longer. You need to move along.”

Then, it was at the Sacramento River Delta KOA, with owners Tom & Michelle Reynolds. Their manager, Kim was an angel, and treated us as if we were equals. But then Tom visited, and the moment he saw us, Kim told us that Tom required us to move to the back of the Kampground. We did, without any fuss, and then just a few days later, we were told by Kim that she had been asked by Michelle to tell us to leave. I contacted Tom through his contact form onhttp://www.rfgrealestate.com (Reynolds Financial Group) and also at his email attomreynolds@pruoc.com and yet, received no response from Tom or Michelle directly.

Here’s Tom:

Tom Reynolds: “He’s rich, so you don’t have to be.”

Kim (the manager) was very kind to us on the way out, and there were even campers there that gave us funds, even though they hadn’t talked with us at length. The entire placed seemed to know that we were getting “kicked out” and appeared to be sad that it was happening. The nature of the system, however, is that people usually refrain from action if something isn’t happening to them.

Well, this IS happening to us, and so I’m acting.

Today, Sandy, the manager at the Boomtown Casino KOA in Reno NV told us that we needed to move on. We’ve been here for 5 days. We really have no way to move on, but will do so in the morning.

Sandy’s reason, given to both my wife and myself: “Our insurance policy doesn’t allow us to have units older than ten years old.” Well, we were not told anything of the sort on the way in, and ironically, the unit right next to us is much older than the 1991 bus conversion we are in. And, our neighbor isn’t leaving, and we are really tired of the discrimination that is seemingly endorsed by the KOA headquarters.

Here’s pictorial proof of Sandy’s excuse for asking us to leave being a lie…

Which unit would YOU say is older?

Which unit would YOU say is older?

Curiously, KOA has turned off our ability to rate any campground since Medford. Here’s a screenshot of that.
