The exterior of my house was painted during August 2011. My house has cedar siding and two wooden decks. It has two stories and a 2,206 SF living area. Sherwin Williams Duration paint was used on the siding and Sherwin Williams Deckscapes stain was used on the decks. Duration paint is a super premium acrylic latex that has a lifetime warranty.

How it Went Overall

Less than one year after the $11,000 paint job was completed in August 2011 there is extensive peeling and blistering. My house looks worse than before it was painted. Mr. Kaylor will not honor his five year warranty, or his many verbal assurances to fix the problems.

On August 22, 2011, two Sherwin Williams representatives inspected my house because of numerous problems encountered during the painting process, such as peeling, blistering, and streaking. Also, I raised the question as to whether or not the paint had failed. They adamantly concluded that the paint did not fail. Their conclusion is supported because building professionals posting on internet forums name Duration as the best exterior house paint more often than any other paint. Even Mr. Kaylor and his foreman stated that Duration was the best paint available. When paint jobs fail and the paint itself is not the culprit, then the failure must be attributable to inadequate preparation and/or improper application. Sherwin Williams identified multiple causes. For example:

  • Insufficient removal of the old paint.

  • Not waiting long enough for the house to dry out before painting. Rainy periods were encountered prior to and during the painting process. Cedar is a soft wood that retains moisture and must be thoroughly dry before painting. Sherwin Williams technical support strongly recommends using a moisture meter to test the wood for moisture content prior to painting. Mr. Kaylors test consists of putting a hand on the siding, and if it isnt wet, then he paints. Such a limited procedure is insufficient, especially for cedar, according to Sherwin Williams technical support.

  • Not waiting the required dry time between the first and second coats of paint. A minimum of 4 hours is required between coats of Duration which is much thicker than other paints. The painters applied additional coats in less than 2 hours. Sherwin Williams officials stated that inadequate drying time is a major factor in most coating failures.

  • Cutting out blisters, caulking the area, and then painting over the caulk is unacceptable.

One week after the Sherwin Williams visit, the painters came back and did additional repainting to finish the job. Final payment was made on August 29, 2011 because the paint job looked acceptable on the day of completion. By September (heavy rains) and October (cold weather) of  2011, extensive blistering, peeling, and cracking began to appear. At that time, it was too late in the Alaska painting season to do anything. Problems became more pronounced during the winter and into the spring of 2012.  

On April 13, 2012, I sent an email to Mr. Kaylor concerning the extensive blistering and peeling. In a subsequent phone conversation, he promised to come up to my house after the snow had melted. He promised to take care of any issues. Mr. Kaylor even said that when I see how well he stands by his work that I should write a letter of recommendation.

On May 23, 2012, Mr. Kaylor and a Sherwin Williams representative jointly inspected my house. The Sherwin Williams official emphatically stated that the extensive peeling, blistering, and cracking was not due to paint failure. (Same conclusion Sherwin Williams reached on August 22, 2011.) The Sherwin Williams official added that Duration paint has been very successfully used on thousands of cedar sided homes. Mr. Kaylor assured me that he stood by his five year warranty and would fix all of the problems, including the decks which are normally not part of the warranty. Mr. Kaylor said he would repaint the problem areas in 3-4 weeks.  He also stated that he would come back every year and do touch ups, if required, for the full five years of the warranty period. As a courtesy, the Sherwin Williams official agreed to provide all of the paint required at no cost.

On June 28, 2012, Mr. Kaylor delivered 15 gallons of Sherwin Williams Duration paint to my house. Mr. Kaylor was accompanied by one of his top painters. Based on the May 23, 2012 inspection of my house, I was expecting a thorough assessment of the repair work required and a scheduled completion date. I was shocked when he tried to leave after dropping off the paint in my driveway. When I asked when they were coming back to paint, the reply I got was maybe next year. When I stated that was unacceptable, Mr. Kaylor got within several inches of my face and repeatedly screamed your house has cancer. That was the last I heard from him. The obvious conclusion is that he has no intention of doing any further work on my house. Also, by dropping off the paint and leaving, Mr. Kaylor was probably counting on me doing the extensive repair work myself, or hiring another contractor, thereby voiding Mr. Kaylors five year warranty and absolving himself of all responsibility.
