KC Custom trailers, you get what you pay for, CHEAP!

This is lengthy so here’s a quick overview. In the end it was 6 trips to the DMV, two titles, a month in the process, bad wiring, poor and dangerous ramp design, not D.O.T compliant, no temp tag, Cheap thin metal fenders with no support that bend like an aluminum can if anything is set on them, wrong size stake pockets, a coupler that wont connect without a whack from the hammer to get it into place, tail lights that are so far forward that on a 7' wide trailer they are hard to see. (Should be in the rear). A nearly broken foot.

I found this trailer manufacturer on craigslist. He advertises in multiple cities throughout the South. His trailers are advertised at hundreds of dollars below anyone else and he offers customization. 

Remember, you get what you pay for and more....

I give credit where credit is due. When I ordered a trailer it took a week of going back and forth on customizations I wanted. Mostly because it took a day for him to respond after each email I sent. But he built the trailer quickly for me as I needed it very quickly.

But it shows....

As it turns out this guy had no experience building trailers. He's a local fireman and wanted something to do in his spare time. Well good for him! He's trying I'll give him that. Nice to talk to, initially. But you need to know something about utility trailers if your going to build them and put them on the road.

When I picked up my trailer it looked GREAT, Initially. 

I ordered stake pockets. 18 to be exact. I got 18. Eighteen 2X2 stake pockets! When I realized this I called back to inquire about the standard 2X4 stake pockets that were in my description when I ordered the trailer. I was told he would have to think about it to determine what he could do. 

Think about it? 

I was moving across country in two days, I needed to build stake sides for the trailer, I don't have time to "think about it". I cut the 2X2 stake pockets off myself and went and purchased 18 new 2X4 stake pockets. He agreed if I drove an hour back to his place that we would weld them on. Well what was nice of him don't you think?

A week later I realized the first design flaw. The pull out ramps had a 4" 90 degree lip on the end so when resting on the trailer the ramp stuck up 4 inches above the deck! There was nothing holding the ramp in place so when unloading a vehicle you had to drive 4 inches up onto the ramp and hope it doesn't slide off the end of the trailer. 

Well it did come off the end of the trailer and smacked my wife on the foot. Its been over a month now and she still has trouble walking. 

Next when we had a wiring problem I went looking underneath and you won’t believe what I saw. Unprotected wiring running front to back. The wire is protected for the first two feet when it comes from the pig tail at the front so you would never know how they cut corners unless you looked. The wiring was ran through holes cut into the frame. Sharp edges rubbing on wires isn't going to work for long.

I didn't mention that when I purchased the trailer I didn't get a temporary tag or a title. I got a bill of sale. Traveled across country and tried to register it in Colorado. But you need a title, or you have to get an inspection from the Colorado State Police AND produce all your receipts to have it labeled as a home built trailer. Well it was a home built trailer (literally) but I didn't build it so I didn’t have receipts. 

I did learn the trailer was not D.O.T. compliant because it lacked side markers or reflective tape.

I asked for a Title, was told to try a different clerk at the DMV to see if I could talk my way through it. Three trips later I am still asking for a title. 

(I didn’t mention that I moved to start a new business in which I would need this trailer daily, so all this time is preventing me from working)

I was promised a title, I asked it to be sent quickly. Then a couple days later I inquire again and was told it was sent. A few more days later it shows up with a post mark the day after I inquired about it.

The title was issued from KC Custom Trailers to KC Custom Trailers. I had to etch the VIN into the frame because there were no labels or marking on the trailer when I picked it up. I paid for a VIN verification and went to the DMV.

4th trip to DMV, nope. The title in not signed over to me. My name isn't on it. I called the builder again, and again was reminded he builds 30 trailers a month and never had this kind of trouble before. Well, sorry. We are now. 

I asked for a corrected title, he asked me to send the old one back with all the corrections annotated. I scanned and sent it. Asked for a quick return of the corrected title. A week later I am still waiting. 

I sent a nasty text, got a nasty text in return saying how he's never had this kind of trouble with anyone before. Then complained that it would have cost him $20 to send the 2nd title priority mail to me. Really? Guess that trailer really was cheap! Couldn't afford to FedEx me the title knowing I was out of business waiting for his mistakes to me corrected.

Finally received the new title. WITH A NEW VIN. Now I had to re etch the VIN, get another VIN verification done and go back to the DMV.
