I was widowed a little over two years ago and earlier this year, at the behest of my sister, decided to get back into the dating scene. The bar scene was a nightmare -- college kids, thrice divorcees, bitter men, stalkers; I quickly realized it was not the route for me. In desperation I turned to the internet only to find the same collection of men there. I had no idea where all of the good men were.

Taking my sister's advice again, who's married and been off the market as long as I have, I turned to a professional dating service, Kelleher & Associates. I own my business and do pretty well, so I decided the expense was worth it (about $7,000).

The service was very enthusiastic at first, setting me up on three dates in the first month. But, guess what? That's right, the same class of people from the bars. One worked in "sales" and had four children spread across three ex-girlfriends which is not the type of Brady Bunch I was hoping to make with my kids. One was literally a shoe salesman like Al Bundy. The third was way out of the age bracket I had specified.

Since none of the men even came close to what I had filled out, I complained that I didn't feel I was getting my money's worth. So, I was set up on a fourth date. This gentleman was in a suit, had a professional job (or so he claimed) -- but spoke as if reading off of a script.

When I got home, I remembered where I had seen him. That's right, he worked in the offices of Keller & Associates. They set me up on a fake date to pacify me. Of course when I confronted my counselor, it was deny deny deny. I had already been bounced around from person to person at the company, and had never met this woman before.

The whole experience has been humiliating. It's quite evident that these people only care about money, and not actually making a concerned effort to assist any of its clients find a good match. For all of their talk about carefully matching me with someone from their database, I think their technology is essentially a slot machine.

You fell victim to one of the company's favorite ploys -- setting you up on a fake date to pacify you. This company is all about collecting that check. If you complain, like you did, they will do everything they can to keep you sending in more checks. I've heard stories about setting people up with other counselors, the boyfriend of the branch manager, etc. I would never do that, but I know it happened. I even heard a story where a counselor begged a male client to go on a date with another client, even going so far as waiving part of the fee. So, in essence, we paid the man to go on a date with a client.
