This was my second trip back to this dealer after he sold the car I had told him I was coming to see. He told me the internet price was it , no negotiating, which I agreed to. He then tried to low ball my trade, we negotiated to a value less than I have been offered, but my Son wanted the car. I went in and we shook hands on the internet price and trade value. After a twenty minute huddle with Mike the Manager, he gave me the bill of sale and started quickly going down the charges.

I asked him to go back to the $1800. He said it was a standard recon fee that "the bank makes him charge". I asked for what and was told it's the cost of the 190 point inspection they do. Ten minutes ago he told me the car was being prepped and said nothing about any fee to the buyer for this. Then there was a $499.00 Motor vehicle fee for license plates. Once again this was new. I explained that I would transfer the plates from my trade. His response, "you have to pay this".

I asked to speak to the Manager, Mike ,who arrogantly told me "that's the way we do business, if we can't do business I will sell it to someone else, as I sell 500 cars a month". So beware the price paid is not the price quoted or negotiated. I should have known as the place felt like a bunch of hustlers..........

Not surprising.

"The salesperson explained in detail what all the charges would be and what they were for."

The salesperson always has a detailed explanation of what their "extra charges" are for. That doesn't make them any less bogus. The "recon fee" in the O.P.'s post is a perfect example. There is no such thing as a bank forcing a dealer to charge such a fee. The dealer is hoping that you'll accept the lame explanation and they clear an extra $1800 profit for a minimal amount of chicanery.

A friend of mine bought a car last month. She told me she got a great price. Of course, in her mind, she was thinking of the price she negotiated. When I looked at her contract, the actual price she paid was over $5000 more. She'd fallen for all of the useless profit enhancing add ons that mysteriously appeared when the contract was written up. Useless extended warranty, paint protection (the Southwest's version of the famous "undercoating"), alarm (which already came with the vehicle), prep fee (actually means nothing), doc fee (yeah, right), alloy wheels (came with the vehicle), chrome protection package (are you kidding me?) and the list goes on.

The dealer likes to take advantage of buyers who think the negotiating is over once they have agreed upon a price. These are also buyers who negotiate for a monthly payment amount, rather than the actual price of the car. If the buyer is naive, he/she will leave the dealership still thinking they made a good deal, and the dealer walks away with an obscene profit. That's the way the dealer likes it.

I went to this dealer and went thru the same process but in my opinion, it was fair and honest. The salesperson explained in detail what all the charges would be and what they were for. The car I was buying looked 100% brand new and drove like it as well. I dont know any manager named "Mike" but I dealt with a manager by the name of Robert and he was a true gentleman. He took the time to answer all our questions and concerns even in a busy showroom full of people. The Finance manager Thomas was another patient and gracious person. He explained to us all the particulars of the finance and payments. Our salesperson, Jose, was a nice guy too and had our car cleaned and prepped for us once we got out of the Finance room. I would definitely come back and buy again from this dealer.

This $1800 charge is nothing more than a bogus, add-on, phoney fee! It wasn't exactly clear if you bought this car or not. I hope you walked out rather than reward another example of the SACB....the Sleazy, American Car Business!
