I went into Kinkos Copy Center a few days back, hoping their CUSTOMER SERVICE may have gotten even a LITTLE bit better. When infact it had become worse! A whole Hell of a lot worse! All I asked the desk was how I get three little pictures of mine scanned and placed onto disk. I had the disk and everything I needed ready to scan. They pointed me to the computer "Self Help" area where I ended up wanting to throw the whole system out! :o) But, out came the comp. assistant wobbling around with a paper in his hand.

I got up and told him I was having trouble with their programs. Note: I was being charged at this time, too. All he could tell me was if HE were to do it, the cost was "50 dollars an hour," as he wobbled on. I made a polite, quiet stink to his face and he told me to go read the instructions on the side of the computer. I was really starting to get torqued now. I think he could see this too.

He then sighed, and walked me over pointing out the directions. Then mumbled under his breath, enough for me to hear, how he had SO much work to do. "I'll be back to help you in a minute, sir." He stated walking off. I thought, okay maybe its not that GREAT of business, but I've been faithful to these guys for years. YA, back when they were new and cared! But to make a long story short, I never got my scanning done.

As I got up, logging off on their computer (remember, I'm being charged here), I calmly tried walking out of the store. The same guy walked right by me asking how it went. I told him I had no idea how to run the dang thing. His response to this was classic. "Sorry about that," he snarled. I think I'm gonna make the world a better place and start telling MY customers that, right? Wow, that's all I have to say. I do know one thing though, I've found a much better place now. Copy Maxx took me right in and was very friendly about the whole deal. And a good deal to boot! I can say only a few words...I think I've had enough of STINKO's!!

#14 UPDATE Employee

another disgruntled employee

AUTHOR: Ashley - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Sunday, July 24, 2005

I have to completely agree with this customer concern. The fact is Kinko's doesn't take care of their employees or offer incentives for providing quality customer service. After four years of working for this company, I cannot wait to graduate college and move on to a better work environment. Additionally, after four years, I still make less than friends who work at Wal-Mart. The only reason I stick around is for the health insurance and tuition reimbursement (which I'm still waiting for even though I've submitted the requested forms and received approval of my classes). Perhaps that puts things in perspective for some consumers?

When I came to work for Kinko's in 2001 the company was a lot more customer focused. Over the past four years I have definitely observed a change in employee attitudes. This is not based solely on my experiences at my own store, but also visits to other stores and experiences of family and friends in various other states. To make matters worse, FedEx offers terrible customer service and that hurts Kinko's. I have personally sent four packages via FedEx since we became FedEx Kinko's, and three of them arrived more than a week later despite paying for overnight shipping. I was never compensated for this inconvenience.

As am employee, I am not allowed to dissuade customers from using FedEx or Kinko's services. As a consumer, I would suggest that customers ship UPS or USPS and seek less expensive alternatives to Kinko's. While the availability and excessability of Kinko's locations and their extreme hours are sometimes convenient, the prices are ridiculous and the quality is no longer superior to the competition.

If you didn't know how to drive, would you rent a car? If you did, would you then expect the underpaid employees at the rental office to teach you how to drive it?

The reason FedEx Kinko's offers a SELF SERVICE area is to allow the customer to do things themselves on equipment they don't normally have access to, and if you have the know-how to get it done quickly its much less expensive this way. Nowhere is it implied that someone will be available or able to teach you how to do it. It's just there to expand upon the options you have when bringing your business to FedEx Kinko's.

Just somethimg to think about the next time your trying to decide if full service or self service is the direction you want go. :)

Over 5 Years at Kinko's ~ Many Memories

AUTHOR: Sam - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, December 17, 2004

I must say that there is no limit to the number of things that happen to the average kinko's employee on a daily basis.

As a third shifter at kinko's for over 3 years (I worked 2 years on second shift as well) I will tell you that if a single kinko's employee is nice to you, you should smile at them, as forming a bond with the person on the other side of the counter may be one of the best investments you could ever make.

Most kinko's employees (co-workers, etc.) are underpaid college students, or older workers with varied backgrounds.

The above comments about employees backstabbing each other to get overtime pay, is not entirely true. Most kinko's stores (and I worked at 3 different ones, due to the company's generous relocation offers.) are run by overworked assistant managers, or managers, who will gladly take a little flack from above, but don't mind if you work 60 hours a week. I should know, for almost a year, I was scheduled for 48, and managed to work 60, sometimes even 70 hours in a week. (70 hours is 40 hours at straight pay, 30 hours at time and a half, so 45 = 40 = 85 hour paycheck a week.) Multiply that by $12 an hour, subtract taxes, and take home would be $900 a week. Not bad for a college kid.

Even with all of that, there is a good deal of resentment by employees. Managers make some money, but the regional managers, and sales managers make over $200,000 a year, before you factor in bonuses. For this reason, any co-worker who offers you a 'deal' will likely give you work for pennies on the dollar, as long as the pennies end up in their pockets.

See unlike McDonald's, where the biggest employee non-cash theft would involve a case of buns, or 500 patties, Kinko's has tons of stuff that people actually want or need, that does not spoil, that has resale value.

They also have a lot of state of the art equipment, and a good deal of talented employees, who, (again) for pennies on the dollar, will likely give you pressed T-Shirt transfers, a stack of business cards, Wedding invitations, and even licensed copies of computer software. (I know of one incident where a guy traded business cards to a call girl in exchange for a 'quickie' right there in the office.)

I have seen bogus concert tickets, bogus backstage passes, press passes, press kits, cd cover art, pornographic sildes, tattoo design books, full color flyers, bogus student ID's, bogus driver's licenses, and even attempts at document forgeries of transcripts, foreign work permits, and proof of insurance papers, and manuals for the meeting of the Bowling Green State University's Young Republicans, all go out the door for less than they would cost. Not that most of those items could be purchased or manufactured legally.

In fact, most kinko's have video cameras aimed not at the doors, to stop theft from the outside, but behind the counter, to prevent theft from employees. Of course as many employees will tell you, these tapes are rarely if ever watched.

I bring this to the fore, as I am the survivor of 3 armed robberies at the store where I worked. One with a co-worker where I was assaulted by a robber, the second at (fake I hope) gunpoint, and during the third, I was in the restroom, and my co-worker got robbed at knifepoint.

Regardless of all this, I am not bitter. I had a good time working for the company. They served their purpose for me, and I am sure I did the same for them.

I look back fondly and miss some of the customers who were nice, so give the people behind the counter a smile, and (if it is after 12:00 a.m.) a $20.00, and you will always be appreciated, and likley not be forgotten.

Self Service and Ex-employees

AUTHOR: Bill - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Thursday, July 10, 2003

In response to the person who used the self-service area in a kinko's branch. First, it does not cost fifty dollars and hour to use our self-service computers. Second, we do offer a full range of graphic design services in our full service department (you will pay a fee for the scan and a fee for doc creation). Third and final on the topic, we offer express pay in most brnaches so a customer can come in insert a card or charge and use all our self serv-equip. quickly. If a customer is not technically savy they will have to place an order and wait for our tun-around time.

As for the person who used to work for the company. Anytime you leave a job there is bound to be some hard feelings. I do agree that not all of the policies make sense but let's face facts kinkos is not the hardest job in the world. You work behind a counter. It is air conditioned. The worst part of your day may be a papercut. So if you think the job stinks go get a job in a coal mine for minimum wage and tell me how bad your old job at kinko's was.

#4 UPDATE Employee

from a disgruntled employee

AUTHOR: Todd - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Saturday, May 24, 2003

First of all, to respond to the ignorant person who said that kinko's employees are high school drop-outs I say that you haven't ever had a conversation with any of the people whom you see behind the counter. I've been with kinkos for four years. Most of the employees I know to have worked for kinkos are college students who are trying to pay for school or they are older people who have been with the company for so long that they wouldn't leave unless they were fired. As for the attitude of the average co-worker you have to understand what a co-worker goes through on a daily basis. In Memphis the average co-worker is paid less than $13 an hour. Half of that automatically goes into taxes (which you have to pay), 401k(if you smart enough to get enrolled), and health insurance. So let's say that you did make $13 an hour. That's a gross of a little over a thousand dollars every two weeks. Almost half of that is gone before you ever see it. On top of that you have a team of monkeys working above you who
have no idea what direction they want to take this company and are constantly in your face about payroll, sales, and budgets (which have numbers are totally unrealistic; I think they do this because the managers bonuses are based on if their store or market hits its top line). Then on top of that you have to deal with your co-workers who want higher raises and more overtime digging up dirt on you so they can get you fired. And the average customer whether they want to admit it or not unless they are a regular customer and have a working relationship with a kinkos employee you have no idea what goes on behind the counter. You have no idea about copy guidelines. You have no idea about kinkos policy. The average customer normally has their secretary do it for them and have no idea why they have to wait. Then you have to answer the ignorant people who call on the phone. "Thank you for calling Kinko's. We're open 24hrs.", "What time do you close?" "We're always open, sir." "Well, what does that mean?" "We never close, sir." "Oh,". And then you have grandmother who comes in, god bless her. Grandmother wants like twenty copies of her granddaughter's class pictures and doesn't understand why we can't copy them without a release from the photographer.

You're constantly understaffed, most often underpaid, and always underappreciated on both fronts. The customer doesn't care because all they want is to have their job done now. Not only that, but they want something for nothing and they use the guise of good customer service.

Honestly, if people would take the time out to actually talk and listen to a counterperson instead of bickering they might be in a position to learn something. The thing about a kinkos coworker is this: we deal with so many people and each one has its own personality. It isn't so much what you ask of a coworker, it's how you approach them. Make no mistake, if you piss us off, we will find some kind of way to screw you over. If we don't get you the first time, we'll get you on the comeback (if someone remembers you). All I can say is that we really want to help you, but we deal with enough nonsense. Something has to give. Either customers and coworkers, excuse me teammembers (that's the new term) have to put pressure on corporate to take care of us or we aren't going to take care of our customers. Something's got to give because we're loosing our incentives.

The company doesn't care because as with all big business what difference do I make. I can be replaced tomorrow. People like me bring hundreds of millions of dollars to kinkos annually, yet no one cares. Their was a time when kinkos was halfway professional. Now it's become the macdonald's of copy shops. But, what do you care. I may not be here tomorrow.

POSTED: Thursday, April 17, 2003

Every kinkos I have been to doesn't have the greatest service. This can be used to your advantage every time I go to kinkos I just go in and use the computer and dont pay for the use. Just going in with your disk and your pics or papers you have to type up and then use the computer. Then just go to the high school drop out working behind the service desk and ask if you may leave to your car to get more paper work. Then just dont come back, this works best when the store is understaffed and its very busy. Oh yeah and dont sign any of your real information to that dumb check-in sheet for computer usage.

What do you think SELF service means?

AUTHOR: Shelley - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Thursday, April 17, 2003

You sound like a mooch trying to get something for free. Thousands of people use our self-serve computers a day, and those that don't know how to use a computer are willing to pay for service. Where in Kinko's does it say that we train people how to use computers? It sounds like the employee used admirable restraint in not telling you to get lost, because most anyone else would have done that. If you made a stink to MY face, I'd make one ON yours. Get it?

Further proof of your ignorance is when you wrote "to make a long story short". No, you made a SHORT story LONG! Here's the short version you should have posted "I am an ignorant skinflint and because Kinko's wouldn't tolerate my whining I'm here to bellyache." Where is the rip-off in that?

Oh yeah: Copy Max SUCKS!

When entereing a Kinko's you have 2 options...self service (you do it yourself) or full service (your work is done for you) As with almost anything, if you do it yourself, it's either a)faster, or b)cheeper. If it's done for you it costs more (it's a service).

If you use a self-serve computer (operative words here are self-service...which means you), common sense should tell you that since you are being charged for the time that you use the equiptment you should probably know how to use it...duh! And if you don't know how to do something like scanning, don't waste your time trying to...that's what full-service is for...Either you do it yourself, or we do it for you...It's that simple. The team-member is not required nor obligated to help you with that. They are there in case the computer does something stupid like freeze up, not teach you. (That he did even 1/2 way walk you through it was charity work.)

I see you as one who tries to get over on the system. It was not bad customer service, you just wanted something for free. And when you did not get it, then it became bad customer service.

My advice to you is take a computer course in scanning (oh, wait I forgot...you want stuff for free..), read the instructions before you log in and decide if it's something that you can accomplish on your own, or just pay to have it done for you...

I've been with the company for over 6 years, and have seen many people like you...You can not get anything for free. Everyday people come into my branch to use the scanner, and they leave happy campers. It's just those who don't know how to use computers who come in and act a fool, hollering and flailing their arms about how much they're being charged. You knew how much you were going to be charged before you sat down, so stop whining. Either you know how to use the computers and the equiptment or you don't...And if you don't, don't waste your time because you are being charged...It's as simple as that...
